Measure your dog, compare those measurements with each product’s usable dimensions and specific sizing chart, then check the fit in the way you’ll actually use it.
What size crate should I get for my 100-pound dog?
PetMD’s crate-sizing chart lists a 48 × 30 × 32-inch crate for dogs in its 90–110-pound range. That is a starting point, not a personalized prescription: dogs of the same weight can differ in height and length, and advertised crate dimensions may not reflect the usable space inside. PetMD’s guide recommends choosing based on the individual dog’s measurements rather than weight or breed alone.
- Measure your dog. Record the dog’s height and length, following the measuring guidance in the crate maker’s instructions.
- Compare with the usable interior. Check the manufacturer’s interior dimensions, not just the exterior size or a weight-range label.
- Account for bedding. Put the bed or mat you plan to use inside before judging the fit; bedding reduces available space.
- Check the dog’s posture. The dog should be able to stand with ease, enter without difficulty, turn around comfortably, and lie on its side with limbs fully extended. If any of these are tight, try a larger crate.
- Check the weight limit. Confirm the manufacturer’s limit, especially if the crate may be carried with the dog inside.
Rebecca Bermingham, CVT, writing in PetMD’s veterinary-reviewed guide, puts the key principle plainly: “It’s important to base the size of the crate on your dog’s measurements, and not their weight or breed alone.”
How do I measure my dog for a harness?
Use the fitting chart for the exact harness model you’re considering. Harness sizes are not interchangeable across brands, and weight alone does not establish a fit.

- Have your dog stand naturally.
- Measure the girth around the body just behind the front legs.
- Measure around the base of the neck.
- Compare both measurements with the maker’s chart for that specific model and follow its fitting instructions.
For example, PetSafe’s Comfort Harness instructions call for those two measurements and direct customers to the chart for that harness. A 2013 Center for Pet Safety study summary observed that the pet-products industry did not have standardized harness sizing at that time. Treat that as a dated observation, not a claim about every current product.
Does a car harness need to be different from a walking harness?
Yes. Do not assume an ordinary walking harness is a vehicle restraint. If you need equipment for car travel, verify that the exact restraint is crash-tested and follow its instructions alongside your vehicle’s directions. Preventive Vet’s guidance discusses crash-tested dog seat-belt harnesses and heavy-duty crates in particular vehicle contexts; it does not establish one setup that suits every dog and car.

- Check the exact product’s safety claims rather than relying on a brand name or general description.
- Check weight limits and the maker’s instructions for the intended vehicle use.
- Do not treat a heavy-duty crate as automatically crash-tested, or a walking harness as automatically suitable for travel.
What size bed fits in a 48-inch dog crate?
Measure the crate’s actual interior before buying a crate bed. A “48-inch” label does not tell you the precise space available on the floor. K9 Ballistics explains that advertised crate dimensions may be rounded up, and that rigid frames, firm foam, and flexible pads have different tolerances.
Choose a bed that fits inside without forcing, bunching, or bending it out of shape. Then check that it does not compromise the dog’s ability to stand, turn, or settle comfortably. A flexible pad may tolerate a close fit differently from a rigid or firm bed, so consider the construction as well as the listed dimensions.

How do I choose a freestanding bed?
Measure the surface your dog actually uses while resting. Observe the dog’s usual sleeping position—curled up, stretched out, or somewhere between—and select a bed with enough usable surface for that posture. There is no universal bed dimension or foam thickness established for every 100-pound dog.
Do not rely on a bed to prevent joint disease or treat pain. If your dog has pain, mobility problems, or a veterinary restriction, ask your veterinarian what type of bed or support is appropriate.

What should I compare when shopping?
- Fit: Compare your dog’s measurements with the product’s usable interior, sleeping surface, or model-specific harness chart.
- Construction: Consider whether a bed is flexible or rigid and whether its material is suitable for your dog’s chewing habits.
- Purpose: Distinguish home resting equipment from a vehicle restraint.
- Instructions and limits: Confirm the maker’s fitting directions, weight limits, and evidence for any product-specific safety claim.
