Feed a young Cane Corso puppy three to four measured meals a day, then gradually reduce meal frequency as the dog matures. For a healthy adult, two meals a day is a practical default. Because guidance differs for giant breeds and individual dogs, divide the dog’s daily food allowance across meals and ask your veterinarian to set portions and advise on the schedule.
How often to feed a Cane Corso by life stage
| Life stage | Practical starting schedule | How to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Young puppy | Three to four measured meals daily | Keep times consistent. For a newly homed puppy, follow the breeder’s or veterinarian’s transition plan. |
| Growing puppy | Reduce meal frequency as the puppy matures | There is no single switch age established for every Cane Corso. Ask your veterinarian to consider growth, health, and the food being fed. |
| Healthy adult | Two meals daily is an easy default | Some guidance allows one to two meals, while breed-specific guidance for giant dogs recommends continuing three smaller meals. Individualize the plan with your veterinarian. |
PetMD recommends three to four meals for Cane Corso puppies and at least two for adults; PDSA also recommends dividing an adult’s daily allowance into two meals. Purina says one to two meals may suit adults, while Royal Canin Canada recommends three meals for puppies and retaining that routine into adulthood for giant breeds. These are differing practical recommendations, not a single medical rule. (PetMD; PDSA; Purina; Royal Canin Canada)
Why puppies eat more frequently
Several smaller meals spread a puppy’s food through the day rather than making one meal do all the work. General feeding guidance from VCA explains that three to four meals can divide food into smaller volumes for a puppy’s small stomach. As your Cane Corso grows, meal frequency can come down; let your veterinarian guide the timing rather than switching at a fixed age. (VCA)
How much to put in each meal
Meal frequency and total food quantity are different decisions. The right daily amount depends on the food’s calorie density and your dog’s energy needs, growth, and body condition. Ask your veterinarian for a portion target, measure that daily allowance, and divide it across the meals. Include training rewards and other treats in the day’s food budget; PDSA advises keeping treats below 10% of calories. Revisit portions with your veterinarian as the puppy grows or an adult’s body condition changes. (PetMD; PDSA)

Choose food suitable for a giant-breed puppy
During growth, look for a complete and balanced food whose nutritional adequacy statement covers growth of large-size dogs. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes large-size dogs as those expected to weigh 32 kg (about 70 lb) or more as adults; check the actual package because recipes and labels can differ. AAHA notes that some large- and giant-breed dogs may not reach skeletal maturity until around 15–16 months. Aim for lean, steady growth and avoid excessive calcium rather than adding supplements without veterinary advice. (Merck Veterinary Manual; AAHA)
When changing foods, Purina’s breed guide recommends transitioning gradually over at least 7–10 days. That is manufacturer guidance; follow a veterinarian’s instructions if they differ. (Purina)

Make meals calm and predictable
- Offer meals at consistent times and measure the daily allowance rather than estimating by eye.
- Keep vigorous exercise away from meals. PDSA advises leaving a gap after eating before exercise; PetMD advises avoiding exercise just before or after food.
- PetMD recommends smaller meals instead of one large meal and feeding from a ground-level bowl. These steps do not eliminate the risk of bloat.
- If your dog eats very quickly, a slow feeder is an optional way to slow the pace; it is not a proven way to prevent gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).
GDV, often called bloat, is an emergency. If you suspect it, seek urgent veterinary care rather than waiting to see whether symptoms pass. (PetMD; PDSA)

A dog with a medical condition, unusual appetite, or a veterinarian-directed feeding plan may need a schedule other than the defaults above. Your veterinarian can set meal frequency and portions around the individual dog’s health and growth, while helping you adjust the routine without overfeeding or compromising a puppy’s development.
