Neither wet nor dry food is automatically better for every dog or cat. Choose a food labeled complete and balanced for the right species and life stage first; then weigh moisture, health and chewing needs, appetite, cost, and storage. Cats and dogs have different nutrient requirements, so a dog food may not meet a cat’s needs.

Start with the nutritional adequacy statement

Check the package for a statement that the food is complete and balanced for your pet’s species and life stage. Food form alone does not tell you whether a product meets those needs. Cats have nutrient requirements that differ from dogs, and dog food may not provide nutrients cats require. See the Merck Veterinary Manual’s guide to dog and cat foods.

Wet and dry describe processing and moisture content more than ingredient content or nutrient profile, as Merck explains. Avoid judging nutritional value by comparing guaranteed-analysis percentages on wet and dry labels without accounting for their different water content; a dry-matter comparison is more informative.

How wet and dry food compare

Consideration Wet food Dry food
Water in the food Wet cat food typically contains 70%–80% water, according to Cornell. Merck gives a broader range of 60% to over 87% moisture for canned pet foods, depending on the product. Provides less water in the meal, so cats eating dry food typically take more of their water by drinking.
Cost Generally costs more than dry food, according to Merck. Generally costs less than canned food, according to Merck.
Storage Unopened cans have a long shelf life in their durable container. Follow the package directions after opening. Unused food can be stored at room temperature. Cornell recommends storing dry cat food in an airtight container.
Acceptance Merck describes canned food as highly palatable. Acceptance varies by animal and product.
Dental considerations May be easier for a cat with periodontal disease or chewing difficulty to eat than dry food; ask a veterinarian about feeding problems. Ordinary kibble should not be treated as dental care. Certain specially formulated diets may help teeth and gums.

What the moisture difference means for cats

Wet food supplies a substantial amount of water in a cat’s meal. Cornell says wet cat food typically contains 70%–80% water. Cats eating wet food may drink less, while cats eating dry food generally get more of their water by drinking. Keep clean, fresh water available whichever format you choose.

Cornell gives about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day as an approximate cat intake guideline, while noting that diet and individual factors affect how much a cat drinks. It is guidance, not a target that applies identically to every cat. The Cornell hydration page explains the estimate.

Dental health is not a reason to rely on ordinary kibble

Some dry diets are specially formulated to support teeth and gums, but that is different from ordinary dry food. VCA reports that clinical studies show dry food alone does not improve feline oral health. Cats with periodontal disease may also have trouble chewing dry food. If your cat seems uncomfortable eating or has a diagnosed dental problem, ask a veterinarian what texture and care are appropriate. See VCA’s overview of cats, nutrition, and periodontal disease.

Choose based on your pet and your routine

  • For a cat that needs more water in meals: Wet food can contribute substantial moisture, but it does not remove the need for fresh drinking water.
  • For a pet with a medical condition: Ask your veterinarian whether a modified diet is needed. Kidney disease, diabetes, and other diagnoses call for individualized advice; food format by itself is not a treatment.
  • For a pet with chewing difficulty or reduced appetite: Discuss the change with a veterinarian, especially if the difficulty is new or persistent.
  • For budget and convenience: Compare the cost of the amount fed per day, not just the package price. Consider storage, portioning, and how reliably your pet eats the food.
  • For any dog or cat: Verify that the food is complete and balanced for the correct species and life stage before deciding between formats.
