How to Stop a Dog From Chasing or Bothering a Goose

Keep your dog leashed and move away from geese. Build attention, “leave it,” and recall gradually in easier settings; don’t use wild birds as a training test.

Keep your dog on leash, create distance from the geese, and calmly guide the dog away. Don’t approach a flock or use geese as a training test: a goose may charge to defend its young. Teach attention, “leave it,” and recall in easier settings, then gradually practice around distractions at a distance your dog can manage.

What to do when your dog spots a goose

  1. Keep physical control. Shorten the leash enough to prevent a lunge, then move away calmly. If your dog is not dependable around wildlife, don’t rely on a verbal cue alone.
  2. Give the birds room. Avoid walking toward geese, goslings, or a nest. Geese may charge when they feel something is too close to their young. Follow posted leash rules.
  3. Reward disengagement. If your dog glances back at you, checks in, or walks with you, reward that behavior with a treat or a toy the dog values.

These are general dog-training strategies applied to a wildlife encounter, not a goose-specific protocol or a guarantee that a cue will work. The AKC advises keeping dogs leashed around wildlife when you are unsure you can control them or their recall is unreliable. AKC wildlife guidance

What to do if your dog is already fixated

Don’t repeat a cue your dog has not learned to follow around distractions this intense. Increase the distance and guide your dog away while maintaining leash control. If your dog cannot disengage, keep moving away rather than letting the dog approach, chase, corner, or harass the birds.

A cue that works in a quiet room may not work near wildlife. The AKC notes that dogs may struggle when a distraction is beyond the level at which they have practiced. AKC guidance on distractions and “leave it”

How to train your dog to leave geese alone

Practice attention and “leave it” away from wildlife

Start in a quiet, controlled place. Reward your dog for turning toward you, focusing on you, or leaving a low-level distraction alone. Use a treat or toy your dog finds worthwhile. Practice “watch me” or “leave it” before trying the cue at a greater distance from distractions.

Chasing can be a natural behavior, so training focuses on building alternative responses and impulse control—not expecting a dog to understand a cue it has not practiced. AKC guidance on chasing

Build recall gradually

  1. Begin recall practice in a quiet, enclosed or otherwise controlled setting.
  2. Reward a prompt return with something your dog values.
  3. Increase distance and distractions gradually, making practice easier if your dog stops responding.
  4. Use a long-line leash when you need room to practice while retaining physical control.

The AKC recommends building recall from low-distraction settings and increasing difficulty over time; a long line can help maintain control during practice. AKC recall guidance

How to choose the right approach

Approach Physical control Distance from geese When it fits
Leash and move away Maintains direct control Lets you increase distance immediately During an encounter, especially if recall is uncertain
Attention or “leave it” cue Depends on leash control and the dog’s response Works best at a distance the dog can handle When the dog can still respond and has practiced the cue
Recall practice on a long line Provides control during training Practice distance can be adjusted For gradually building recall away from geese and other strong distractions

A dog that cannot disengage safely needs more distance and continued leash control. Prey-drive guidance cautions that recall may not overcome a strong chase stimulus. AKC prey-drive guidance

Why dogs chase birds—and why a goose encounter is different

Chasing is part of many dogs’ natural behavior, but a goose encounter has risks beyond an interrupted walk: a dog may harass or corner wildlife, and an adult goose may charge to protect its young. Preventing access is safer than testing whether training will hold in the moment. Keep practice separate from nests, goslings, and wild flocks.

If you cannot safely manage your dog around wildlife, maintain leash control, increase distance, and consider working with a qualified dog trainer or behavior professional.
