To make a cat insurance claim, check your policy’s deadline and requirements, gather an itemized veterinary invoice and the records your insurer requests, complete any required form, and submit everything through an approved channel. Keep copies and confirmation so you can track the claim and respond if the insurer asks for more information. Requirements vary by insurer, policy, and country, so your own policy and insurer’s current checklist take priority.
How do I make a cat insurance claim?
Use this sequence for an existing policy. A claim may be ineligible if the treatment falls outside the policy’s coverage or waiting-period rules, even if you submit it on time.
- Check the policy and claim instructions. Confirm the filing deadline, covered treatment, waiting periods, exclusions, deductible or excess, co-insurance, and benefit limits. If you are unsure what records the insurer needs, ask before sending the claim.
- Get the paperwork together. Start with the claim form or online claim process, an itemized invoice, and veterinary records relevant to the condition and treatment. Add proof of payment if required.
- Complete the owner’s section and check for a veterinary section. Provide the requested details about your cat, policy, treatment, and clinic. Ask the clinic to complete its section or provide signatures if the form requires them.
- Submit through an approved channel. Insurers may accept claims through a portal or app, email, fax, or post; some also allow claims to be initiated by phone. Follow your insurer’s instructions for file types and submission routes.
- Save copies and track the claim. Keep the form, invoice, receipts, records, and submission confirmation or claim reference. Check the insurer’s portal or contact it for status, and provide any additional documents it requests.
For example, MetLife’s claims instructions list an itemized invoice and veterinary records among the documents that may be needed. Pets Best says its process requires proof of payment and does not treat an estimate or unpaid invoice as proof of payment. That is a provider-specific requirement, not a universal rule.
What documents do I need to submit?
Start with the insurer’s own checklist. The documents below are commonly relevant, but not every insurer requires every item for every claim.

- Claim form or online claim details: Complete the policyholder fields and identify your cat, policy, treatment, and veterinary clinic. For example, Direct Line asks for a policy number, a description of the problem, and vet contact details.
- Itemized veterinary invoice: Ask the clinic for a breakdown of services and charges rather than a total-only bill. PHI Direct asks for paid receipts with an itemized breakdown.
- Proof of payment or paid receipt: Include it if your insurer requires it. An estimate or an unpaid invoice may not satisfy that requirement.
- Veterinary records or clinical notes: The insurer may need records to assess your cat’s condition and treatment. Requirements differ: MetLife says its process requires the last 12 months of veterinary records—or adoption records, if applicable—for a first claim. Pet Protect requests the full, updated medical history and vaccination records.
- Veterinary completion or signatures: If the form has a clinic section, ask the veterinary team to complete it and confirm who must sign. Desjardins specifies that both the owner and a veterinary clinic representative sign its form.
- Other records requested for your claim: Keep diagnostic results, treatment notes, or other documents available if the insurer asks for them. Do not assume these are mandatory for every claim.
Ask the clinic or insurer whether it needs the full medical history or records from a particular period. Sending the requested records promptly can help avoid delays caused by missing information.
Do I need my vet to fill out the claim form?
Only if your insurer’s form or instructions require it. Some claim processes ask the clinic to complete a clinical section or provide a signature; others may ask you to submit records without requiring the vet to fill out the form. Check the form before submitting it, and allow time for the clinic’s records team to respond.

Desjardins, for example, requires signatures from both the policyholder and a veterinary clinic representative on its form. This is a requirement of that provider’s process, not a rule for all cat insurance claims.
Can pet insurance pay my vet directly?
Sometimes, depending on the insurer’s arrangements and the clinic’s agreement. Many claim examples involve the owner paying the bill first and receiving reimbursement later. Direct Line says it can pay the practice if the vet agrees; Desjardins describes direct payment for certain complex cases arranged by the vet.

Ask both your insurer and clinic before treatment if direct payment matters to you. Even when the insurer pays the clinic, you may still owe amounts not covered by your policy, such as a deductible or excess and co-insurance.
How long do I have to file?
There is no single deadline that applies to every policy. Check the claim window in your policy and submit as soon as you have the required documents. As examples of provider-specific rules, Desjardins’ Canadian program says it must receive a claim within six months of treatment, while Pet Protect says the deadline is set out in the policy.

Waiting periods are separate from claim-filing deadlines. Treatment during a waiting period may not be eligible just because you submit the paperwork later. Desjardins lists, for its program, waiting periods of 48 hours for accidents, 14 days for illness, and six months for dental care. Pets Best says waiting periods vary by coverage and state. Check your own policy rather than applying either provider’s figures to another plan.

A covered claim may still be reduced by the policy’s deductible or excess, co-insurance, uncovered charges, or benefit limits. Review those terms before assuming the full invoice will be repaid.

Desjardins illustrates the calculation for its program with a $1,000 claim, 20% co-insurance ($200), and a $100 deductible, resulting in $700 reimbursement. This is that program’s example, not a typical payout or a prediction of what another insurer will pay.
How long does claim processing take?
Processing estimates vary by insurer and may depend on whether the claim is complete. Provider examples include MetLife, which says most complete claims are processed in about five days; Desjardins, which says most take five to ten business days; and PHI Direct, which says most take 15 business days. These estimates are not guarantees for another insurer or an individual claim.
If the insurer requests more records, send them through the permitted channel and retain proof of submission. If you disagree with a decision, follow the insurer’s review or appeal process and its stated deadline. MetLife describes a written appeal window for its claims; do not assume that timeframe applies to other providers.
