To compare cat insurance quotes, look beyond the premium and headline vet-fee limit. Check whether the limit is shared or applies separately to each condition, how often the excess is charged, whether an age-related co-payment applies, and what happens to ongoing conditions at renewal. The exact terms on your quote schedule and policy wording determine what you would pay and what treatment could remain covered.
Compare the same details on every quote
Make a side-by-side record of each policy’s limit, excess, ongoing-condition rules and renewal terms. A headline such as “£4,000 vet-fee cover” is not enough to tell you how much could be available for your cat’s particular condition.
| What to compare | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vet-fee limit | Whether it is an overall annual limit or a separate limit per condition, and which claims draw on it | An overall limit can be used across accidents and illnesses; a per-condition limit sets a ceiling for each condition. |
| Limit period and reset | When the period begins and ends, and what happens when the policy renews | A limit may become available again at renewal, but continuing cover is subject to the policy terms. |
| Excess | Amount, whether fixed or percentage-based, and how often it applies | An excess charged per condition or incident can affect several claims differently from one charged once per policy year. |
| Age-related contribution | Any age trigger, percentage and whether it is on top of the fixed excess | A low fixed excess may not reflect the full amount you would contribute. |
| Ongoing conditions | Whether a condition can remain covered in later policy years and the renewal requirements | “Lifetime” cover is conditional, not unlimited. |
| Exclusions and sub-limits | Rules for pre-existing conditions, dental care, complementary treatment and any benefit-specific ceilings | The main vet-fee limit may not apply to every treatment or circumstance. |
| Renewal and price | Continuity requirements, how premiums are reviewed and payment terms | Future cover and affordability depend on the contract and renewal offer. |
Check what the annual limit applies to
An overall annual limit is a shared ceiling for eligible claims during the policy year. If your cat has more than one accident or illness, those claims may draw on the same amount. A per-condition annual limit instead gives each eligible condition its own ceiling for that policy year.
These are different ways of structuring cover, not interchangeable descriptions of the same figure. For example, PDSA describes its lifetime limits as overall annual amounts, while Animal Friends’ Lifetime Condition Limit Policy Booklet (2026) lists vet-fee limits per condition per policy year. Compare the basis as well as the number, and check the wording for how the policy year and renewal affect the available limit.

A provider-specific per-condition example
Animal Friends’ 2026 booklet gives Super, Superior and Superior Plus vet-fee limits of £1,000, £2,000 and £4,000 per condition per policy year, respectively. It also says one vet-fee excess applies per condition per policy year and that the excess does not count towards the vet-fee limit. These are terms for that booklet’s policies, not a market-wide rule. Read Animal Friends’ policy information.
Work out how often the excess is charged
The excess is the amount you contribute towards a claim under the policy. Compare more than its headline size: check whether it applies per incident, per condition, per claim or per policy year, and whether it can apply again after renewal. If a policy has both a fixed excess and a percentage contribution, establish how the wording says they are applied.

For example, PDSA lists a £75 fixed excess per incident per policy year for its stated tiers. Animal Friends’ 2026 booklet instead describes one vet-fee excess per condition per policy year. These examples illustrate why the specific policy wording matters; neither establishes a universal rule for cat insurance. See PDSA’s policy explanation.
Look for age-related co-payments
Some policies add a percentage contribution once a cat reaches a specified age. Animal Friends’ 2026 booklet describes a co-payment from the first renewal after age 10; PDSA lists a 20% overage excess for cats aged 10 or over on the specified policies. Check whether the percentage is additional to a fixed excess and when it starts applying. Both examples are product-specific.

“Lifetime” generally refers to the possibility of continuing cover for an ongoing condition across policy years, subject to renewal and the policy’s limits and exclusions. It does not mean unlimited treatment or guaranteed cover regardless of payment, renewal or policy terms.
PDSA says its lifetime limit is an overall amount for accidents and illnesses that is reinstated at renewal, and that long-term conditions remain covered if premiums are paid and the policy is renewed. Co-op describes recurring-illness cover as included in its lifetime option and excluded from its time-limited option. Its policy information is at Co-op cat insurance.
Rank #4
A time-limited policy may stop covering a condition once a specified period or amount is reached. PDSA describes its 12-month option as ending cover for a condition when the chosen amount is reached or 12 months from first symptoms, whichever happens first. Check the wording for how the clock starts and what the policy counts towards the limit.

Ask how the insurer will treat your cat’s past symptoms, vet visits and diagnosed conditions. Disclose the medical history accurately and do not assume a new policy will cover a condition excluded by its terms. The RSPCA says pre-existing conditions are not covered under its product information. Read the RSPCA’s cat insurance information.

Check whether ongoing-condition cover depends on renewing without a break, paying premiums on time or meeting other conditions. Review the renewal offer each year rather than assuming that the current premium or terms will continue. The RSPCA warns that premiums may rise at renewal with no cap on increases; it says factors include age, claims history, veterinary treatment inflation and policy enhancements.
Also look for limits that sit below the main vet-fee ceiling, including any separate ceilings for dental or complementary treatment. A large overall limit does not establish that every type of treatment is covered up to that amount.
Use the documents for your actual quote
A provider page can summarize policy tiers, but your selected cover and applicable terms should be confirmed in your quote documents. Ageas directs customers to their Statement of Fact and schedule; use those documents alongside the policy wording to check the limits, excesses and options actually offered to you. See Ageas cat insurance information.
- For each quote, note the selected vet-fee limit and whether it is shared overall or applies per condition.
- Record the limit period, renewal reset rules and what happens to a condition that continues into the next policy year.
- Write down the fixed excess, any percentage contribution, and exactly how often each applies.
- Check exclusions, benefit-specific sub-limits and how your cat’s medical history affects eligibility.
- Confirm renewal and payment requirements, then compare the renewal terms and likely cost exposure—not only the first premium.
When any point is unclear, ask the insurer to explain it against the policy wording and your quote schedule before buying or renewing. A comparison is only like-for-like when the limits, cost-sharing and condition rules are understood on the same basis.
