Keep enough distance for both to stay relaxed, reward calm behavior, and stop or move farther apart if either dog shows fear or tension. At home, give the rescue a secure place to retreat and keep the puppy and adult dog separated whenever you cannot actively supervise them. There is no single timeline that fits every dog.
Why a puppy-mill rescue may need a slower introduction
Dogs rescued from puppy mills can have severe fear or limited experience with ordinary social situations. The ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center works with severely fearful and undersocialized dogs, including puppy-mill rescues, but an individual dog’s history does not tell you exactly how it will respond to another dog. Proceed according to what both dogs show you, rather than assuming the rescue will be fearful—or ready to socialize quickly. How to introduce the dogs
1. Start outdoors, with space to spare
Choose a neutral or low-pressure outdoor area rather than bringing the new dog straight into the resident dog’s territory. Have a separate handler for each dog, and use leashes. Begin far enough apart that each dog can notice the other without becoming tense; AAHA gives walking on opposite sides of a residential street as one example. The useful starting distance is the one at which both dogs can remain comfortable, not a fixed number of feet. AAHA: Introducing Your New Dog to Other Pets
2. Close the distance only while both dogs stay comfortable
Walk in the same direction and gradually reduce the space between the dogs if both remain relaxed. Allow brief sniffing or investigation only when both dogs appear comfortable, then keep moving rather than requiring prolonged contact. Use small food rewards for calm behavior and speak in a calm, friendly tone. Let the dogs’ responses determine whether to continue, pause, or increase the distance. 3. Read body language and make space when needed
Warning signs can include raised hair, teeth-baring, deep growling, stiff-legged movement, or prolonged staring. If you see these, calmly interrupt the interaction and move the dogs farther apart; do not punish a growl or force them to approach. A shorter future interaction may be appropriate only if both dogs can stay comfortable. Fear or tension is information that the situation needs to change, not a cue to make the dog endure more contact. The ASPCA advises letting a dog progress at its own pace and not forcing it to remain around something when clearly fearful or uncomfortable. 4. Repeat manageable meetings rather than forcing a quick result
End a meeting or add distance if either dog is struggling. On another occasion, begin again at a distance where both can be calm. There is no evidence-based universal number of minutes or days to wait before the dogs meet again; let their behavior guide the pace. The aim is not to make them interact, but to let them become familiar without either dog being overwhelmed.

Help the rescue settle at home
Once home, let the rescue explore at its own pace and provide a secure retreat where the resident dog cannot bother it. A new dog may hide or initially avoid eating or drinking; AAHA advises against forcing the dog out of its safe space. If reduced eating or drinking continues for more than a day or two, consult a veterinarian. This is general advice for new dogs, not a timeline specific to puppy-mill rescues. Use gates, closed doors, or separate rooms to control access while the dogs adjust. Keep food, treats, and valued toys apart if either dog becomes tense around them. Make sure the adult dog can rest away from the puppy and gets attention without having to compete for it. Keep the puppy and adult dog safe
Do not leave the puppy alone with the adult dog until you are confident the puppy is safe. Puppies younger than four months may miss an adult dog’s subtle signals that play should stop, according to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County’s introduction guidance, which carries a 2002 copyright/adaptation note. Contact your veterinarian and a qualified canine behavior professional if an introduction involves aggression, fear remains intense, or the rescue is not settling. The ASPCA advises seeking professional help promptly after aggressive behavior, and AAHA recommends consulting a veterinarian and certified canine behavior consultant for persistent adjustment difficulties or unwanted behaviors. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s 2025 board statement says its 2021 humane dog-training position statement remains its most current and authoritative expression of its views.
