Choose a large-dog raincoat by your dog’s measurements and the coat’s exact size chart—not by breed name or an “XL” label. Measure chest girth and back length, check neck girth if the brand requests it, then compare coverage, water-protection claims, harness access and visibility features for the walks you take.
Measure your dog before choosing a size
Use a soft tape and record measurements in the units shown on the retailer’s chart. For chest girth, wrap the tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Measure back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Measure neck girth if the product chart asks for it.
Charts differ by brand and product. Barc London asks for chest, back and neck measurements, and notes that its current raincoat version has different measurements from the original. Ruffwear’s Sun Shower size range is based on chest girth, with garment dimensions listed separately. Charles River’s New Englander chart uses chest girth and back length. Follow the chart for the specific coat you are considering: the same size label does not mean the same fit across brands.
If your dog falls between sizes, use that manufacturer’s guidance rather than applying another brand’s rule. Barc London recommends sizing up; Ruffwear provides its own between-size direction. A broad chest, deep shoulders, long back or short torso can also affect how a coat sits. Do not choose on weight alone: check how the garment fits at the chest and whether it rubs.

Choose the coverage and style for your walks
Raincoats vary in how much of the dog they cover and how they fasten. The following tradeoffs are general category descriptions from DogWalkWeather’s commercial guide, not rules that apply to every coat.

| Fleece-lined waterproof coat | Adds warmth as well as rain protection; the extra warmth may be excessive in mild weather. |
| Poncho or cape | Can be quick to put on, but may move in wind or lack a usable harness opening. |
Think about coverage, warmth, ease of dressing, stability in wind and how the coat works with your walking gear. If you use a harness, verify that the harness connection remains accessible with the coat on.

Compare water protection and construction claims
Product descriptions use terms such as “waterproof” and “shower-resistant,” but those labels alone do not tell you how a garment is constructed. For walks in sustained rain, look for stated construction details such as sealed or heat-sealed seams as well as the material’s water-protection claim. None of the cited product information provides a comparable waterproof rating or independent test result, so do not treat manufacturer wording as a measured comparison.
For example, Charles River lists a polyurethane shell, waterproofing, wind resistance and heat-sealed seams for its New Englander Doggie Rain Jacket. Red Dingo’s Perfect-Fit Rain Coat fact sheet describes a waterproof, windproof outer shell, a breathable lining and sealed seams. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance findings.

Check harness access, adjustability and visibility
Look for features that match your dog and walking conditions. Harness access can make a coat more practical for harness-wearing dogs; adjustable areas may help you get a more secure fit. Reflective trim or striping is worth comparing if you walk in low light, but a listed reflective feature is not proof of a particular safety outcome.
Charles River lists reflective striping, while Red Dingo describes reflective trim and chest and belly adjustability. Check the actual garment description and images for the model you are considering rather than assuming these features are standard across a brand’s range.

If shopping on Amazon, search for a large dog raincoat, then confirm the current listing’s actual chest and back measurements against your dog. Check the size chart on the listing or manufacturer page before buying; a product’s availability and chart can change.

Care for the coat according to its label
Follow the care instructions for the exact product. Red Dingo’s fact sheet says its coat can be machine washed on a warm 40°C/104°F cycle; do not assume that setting applies to other raincoats or versions. Check the garment’s own label before washing.
