Not all dogs do. A raincoat can make wet-weather walks more comfortable for dogs that dislike getting soaked or chilled, and it can reduce mud and wet fur at home. Whether one helps depends on your dog’s coat, size, age, health, comfort, and the weather—not breed alone.
When a raincoat can help
A raincoat is an optional comfort and cleanup aid for many dogs, not a universal necessity. A properly fitted waterproof coat can keep more of a dog’s fur dry, reduce the amount of mud carried indoors, and make some dogs more willing to go outside in wet weather. The American Kennel Club’s raincoat guidance and its advice on going outside in bad weather describe these practical benefits.
A coat may be especially useful if your dog seems uncomfortable in rain, gets cold easily, or has a short or sparse coat. Some small dogs may also be bothered by being close to wet ground. Watch your own dog: reluctance to walk, shivering, or an obvious dislike of getting wet can be a reason to try suitable rain gear, while a dog that remains comfortable may not need it.
Keeping a dog drier can improve comfort and reduce cleanup, but the cited guidance does not establish that raincoats prevent respiratory illness, skin disease, or ear infections. Treat those as separate health concerns and ask a veterinarian about symptoms or recurring problems.

How your dog and the weather affect the decision
Cold tolerance varies with coat, body size, age, health, activity, and how long the dog is outside. Short-coated or hairless dogs, small or lean dogs, puppies, and seniors may be more affected by cold or wet conditions. Dogs with thick coats may have more natural protection during brief exposure, but no coat type guarantees safety in extreme cold. The AKC discusses these factors in its guide to choosing a winter coat and veterinary guidance on sweaters and jackets.
There is no reliable breed-only checklist or universal temperature threshold in this guidance that determines when every dog needs a coat. Consider the conditions and the individual outing: rain, wind, cold, time outdoors, and whether your dog stays active or appears uncomfortable. A rain shell addresses water exposure; it may not provide enough insulation for cold weather. If warmth is also needed, choose gear intended to provide insulation and limit exposure when conditions are severe.
How to choose and fit a dog raincoat
Measure your dog rather than choosing by weight alone. Dogs of similar weight can have different body shapes, and sizing varies by maker. The AKC’s raincoat guide recommends checking fit and allowing about two fingers of clearance under straps.

- Use the specific manufacturer’s size chart; do not assume that a size label is consistent between brands.
- Put the coat on and check that it stays in place without pinching or restricting walking, running, or play. A coat that is too loose may let water in or catch during movement.
- Check that the coat works with your walking harness and that its coverage suits the outing.
Choose features for your actual needs: a water-repellent outer layer for rain, reflective details when visibility matters, or a removable hood if your dog tolerates it. Consider how easy the coat is to clean, and follow its care label. These are practical selection points, not guarantees of any particular fabric’s performance; the guidance cited here does not independently test or rank raincoats.

Help your dog get used to wearing it
Introduce the coat gradually rather than putting it on for the first time at the door in a downpour. Let your dog inspect it in a familiar, calm place, reward relaxed investigation, and try a brief period of indoor wear. Before heading out, check that your dog can move normally. If the dog resists or moves awkwardly, stop and reassess comfort and fit instead of insisting on a walk in the coat.

Rain gear does not replace cold-weather safety
A raincoat is not a substitute for shortening or avoiding time outdoors in severe cold, nor for veterinary care. The AKC’s hypothermia guidance identifies shivering and curling up as early warning signs; other possible signs described in AKC veterinary-authored guidance include cold ears and feet, rapid breathing, increased urination, and hair standing on end. If you suspect hypothermia or frostbite, warm your dog and contact a veterinarian promptly.
