For most long-haired cats, a long-toothed or wide-toothed metal comb is the best starting point for checking the coat and gently working through minor tangles. A cat slicker brush can be a useful companion for loose hair and small knots. Choose by the task and your cat’s comfort—not by a supposed universal “best” brand.
Which grooming tool should you choose?

The sources support these tool categories and uses, but do not establish a best brand or model, or provide head-to-head product testing. Match the tool to the coat’s condition and your cat’s tolerance.
How often should you groom a long-haired cat?
Many long-haired cats need grooming every day to help prevent knots from forming, according to the RSPCA. VCA also recommends daily combing or brushing for long-haired cats in its guidance on grooming a long-haired cat. Daily grooming is practical care guidance, not a guarantee that mats will never form.
How to groom without making tangles worse
- Start gently and briefly. Keep early sessions short while your cat gets used to grooming, and reward cooperation.
- Follow the coat. Use a wide-toothed metal comb and work in the direction the hair grows naturally, as the RSPCA advises.
- Check tangle-prone areas. Pay particular attention under the legs, on the chest and abdomen, behind the ears, in the armpits, along the backs of the legs and around the groin.
- Work only on minor knots. Tease a small knot gently rather than pulling or forcing the comb through it. Stop if grooming is painful or your cat will not tolerate it.
When a mat needs professional help
For severe or extensive tangles, contact a professional groomer or veterinarian. Do not try to cut a mat out with scissors: a cat’s skin can be difficult to see within a tight mat, and scissors can cause injury. Seek veterinary advice if the skin looks irritated or you are concerned your cat may be hurt. VCA’s guidance on grooming and coat care supports getting professional help for severe matting and cautions against scissors.
