The Puppy Bowl is an annual, pre-taped television special that uses a playful football format to showcase shelter and rescue animals and encourage adoption. It debuted in 2005 as Super Bowl counterprogramming; in 2026, Puppy Bowl XXII featured 150 dogs from 72 shelters and reached 15.3 million viewers, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
What is the Puppy Bowl?
The Puppy Bowl is a television event built around dogs playing with toys on a miniature football field. A dog carrying a toy across a goal line is treated as scoring a touchdown. The football language is a playful frame, not a real sporting competition.
The animals come from shelters and rescue organizations, and the program points viewers toward adoption. As the Television Academy’s 2014 retrospective notes, the show directed viewers to its website for adoption information. Viewership figures measure audience reach, not how many adoptions the broadcast caused.
When did the Puppy Bowl start, and why does it air during the Super Bowl?
The Puppy Bowl debuted in 2005 as counterprogramming for the Super Bowl. The Associated Press describes the show’s launch in that context: it offered viewers an animal-centered alternative to football coverage. The available research does not establish a definitive original creator or a confirmed first-person account of the specific inspiration, so the counterprogramming explanation is the best-supported origin framing.

Adoption is the point—not a guaranteed outcome
The Puppy Bowl gives participating shelters and rescue organizations visibility and encourages viewers to consider adoption. The sources reviewed do not provide a consistent, independently verified total for adoptions caused by the broadcast. It would be misleading to treat audience size, participant counts, or a donation partnership as proof of adoption outcomes.
