Cats vary: the litter that feels comfortable to one may be rejected by another. For easier cleanup, weigh dust, tracking, and scooping together rather than expecting any litter to eliminate mess. If your cat has injured or persistently irritated paws, or suddenly changes its toileting habits, contact a veterinarian.
What to look for first
Cats generally prefer unscented, finer-textured litter, and the 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines say unscented clumping litters are generally preferred when offered at sufficient depth for burying waste. These are starting points, not guarantees: assess your own cat’s comfort and willingness to use the box.
Compare the choices across several practical factors:
- Paw feel: Begin with a fine texture if your cat is comfortable with it. Pellet shapes may feel uncomfortable to some cats, particularly those with degenerative joint disease.
- Scent: Choose unscented litter. Fragrance can be aversive to cats, and it does not replace scooping.
- Dust: Look for low-dust claims, but treat them as a relative feature, not a promise of zero dust. Notice dust when pouring, digging, and scooping.
- Clumping: Clumping litter can make waste easier to scoop. Compare how it behaves in your box; a product label alone does not establish cleanup performance.
- Tracking: Larger or heavier granules and a litter mat may help contain loose particles, but larger pieces may be less comfortable or make digging harder for some cats.

How litter materials differ
Material affects both texture and cleanup, but no material is best for every cat. Cats Protection’s litter guidance describes common alternatives and their acceptance tradeoffs.

Material descriptions are broad categories, not guarantees about a particular product. If your cat is already using its box comfortably, do not switch abruptly for a theoretical benefit.

How to test a new litter without guessing
- Keep the current option available. Where practical, offer a second box with the alternative rather than replacing the familiar litter all at once. Cornell recommends trying different box-and-litter combinations when needed.
- Watch how your cat uses each box. Hesitating before entry, avoiding digging or covering, shaking paws after leaving, perching on the edge, or stopping use can signal dissatisfaction. These behaviors are clues, not a diagnosis.
- Change one factor at a time. Compare texture, scent, or material while keeping the box setup as consistent as practical, so you can tell which change your cat responds to.
- Prioritize use and comfort over the label. A theoretically softer or lower-dust option is not a good fit if your cat avoids it.
Set up the box for access and easier scooping
Box access and litter depth both matter, but they are separate measurements. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP guideline recommends a tray about 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the base of the tail, where dimensions allow. For cats who are unwell or have difficulty stepping in, the guideline recommends low-sided or low-entry access.
Depth guidance varies by source. Cornell describes a typical preference of about 1–2 inches, while PetMD’s reviewed guide recommends scooping once or twice daily and gives a 1–3 inch depth range. Treat these as source-specific guidance rather than a single prescription; use a depth that lets your cat dig and bury comfortably.

Scoop regularly to remove waste and help control odor. A litter mat can catch some particles outside the box, but it cannot compensate for litter your cat dislikes or replace routine cleaning.

“Sensitive paws” describes an observation, not a diagnosis. If you see wounds, inflammation, or persistent pain, ask a veterinarian to assess your cat rather than trying to solve a possible medical problem by changing litter. Respiratory illness is also a reason to consult a veterinarian about suitable litter.

Sudden house-soiling or a change in toileting deserves attention, too. Cornell notes that soiling can reflect a medical problem, litter-box aversion, or a preference for a different surface or location. Do not assume that switching brands will address the cause.
