If one dog guards the sofa from the other, stop inviting them to share it for now. Give each dog a separate resting place and prevent unsupervised access. Don’t punish growling, force a dog off the sofa, or stage close encounters. Training may help in some cases, but safety comes first—and sharing furniture does not have to be the goal.
Make the sofa safe to use today
Pause shared sofa time while guarding is happening. Set up a comfortable bed, mat, rug, or blanket for each dog in a separate spot. A gate or another secure barrier can help manage access when you cannot actively supervise; these are management aids, not treatments for guarding. VCA’s guidance for sibling dogs also describes separate rest areas and a routine that gives dogs space from one another (VCA Animal Hospitals: Dog Aggression and Sibling Rivalry – Treatment).
Do not trap a dog on the sofa or put yourself between dogs during a conflict. If either dog becomes tense, calmly end the interaction and increase distance when you can do so safely. If you are unsure how to separate them without risk, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for help.
Notice what happens before the growl
A sofa can be a valued resting place, and a dog may guard access to it from another dog. AVSAB recommends considering whether a dog protects things it values, including resting places, people, food, toys, or attention, when assessing the risks of adding another dog to a home (AVSAB: Bringing a Second Dog into the Home). Don’t assume you know the dog’s motive; observe the situation and the signals that come before a growl.

Keep a brief record of which dog is on the sofa, who approaches, how close they get, whether a person is giving attention, what happened just beforehand, and what body language appears first. Signs of concern can include stiffening, freezing, hard staring, snarling, growling, or snapping. A growl is a warning to give the dog space—not an invitation to test how close the other dog can get.
Don’t punish warnings or force sharing
Yelling, intimidation, or punishment can worsen guarding and damage trust. Don’t drag a dog off the sofa, make the dogs share it, or punish a growl. ASPCA’s guidance on resource guarding recommends managing the situation and seeking professional help when there is bite risk or other serious warning behavior (ASPCA: Food Guarding). VCA notes that removing a valued resource may be the best choice in some cases (VCA Animal Hospitals: Food Bowl Aggression in Dogs).

Separate resting places can be a complete and sensible long-term solution. The dogs do not have to share the sofa for the household to succeed.
Consider gradual behavior work only when it is safe
Management reduces opportunities for conflict now. Behavior modification may help change a dog’s response over time, but it should not replace the separation and supervision needed to keep both dogs safe. AVSAB describes management as support for gradual behavior training, while VCA’s guidance for unfamiliar-dog fear advises staying below the dog’s tolerance threshold and progressing only while the dog remains relaxed (AVSAB: Staying Safe: Management for Fearful Dogs; VCA Animal Hospitals: Unfamiliar Dogs – Treatment).

For a sofa-related conflict between household dogs, do not improvise close, face-to-face practice. Ask a qualified professional to tailor any behavior plan to your dogs and home. If a professional determines gradual work is appropriate, the dogs need enough distance and control to stay relaxed; do not move them closer if either becomes tense.
