A cautious transition takes about 7–10 days; some healthy dogs tolerate a faster four-day change, while dogs with sensitive stomachs or health problems may need longer. Follow your veterinarian’s plan if the food change is for a medical reason.
How to switch your dog to a new canned food
Keep the total amount of food your dog eats each day steady. As you increase the new food, reduce the old food by the same share. The schedule below is a cautious option, not a guarantee that your dog will have no digestive symptoms.
| Days | Current food | New canned food |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | About 75% | About 25% |
| 3–4 | About 50% | About 50% |
| 5–6 | About 25% | About 75% |
| 7 onward | None, if your dog is eating normally and tolerating the change | All of the usual daily amount |
These percentages are shares of the dog’s normal daily food, not additional portions. Divide the daily mix among the dog’s usual meals. During the transition, avoid introducing new toppers or changing other parts of the diet if you can; keeping the change simple makes it easier to tell how your dog is responding.
Choose a pace that suits your dog
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes a four-day transition that works for most dogs: move through 75/25, 50/50, and 25/75 before switching fully on day four. The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center recommends ten days for most healthy pets. These are different general recommendations, not evidence that one schedule prevents stomach upset better than the other. A 7–10-day plan is a cautious middle ground; slow down further if your dog has previously had digestive trouble or has a sensitive stomach. See Cornell’s diet-transition guidance and the Animal Medical Center’s transition guide.

What to monitor during the change
Check your dog’s appetite, energy, bowel movements, and general comfort each day. Mild changes in stool can happen, but vomiting, significant diarrhea, or a drop in appetite are reasons to slow or pause the switch and contact your veterinarian for guidance. If your dog is changing food because of a diagnosed condition, use the veterinarian’s specific food and schedule rather than a general plan.
What to do if your dog develops diarrhea
- Stop increasing the new food. A sudden onset of diarrhea after a switch may mean the transition is moving too quickly.
- Return to the previous diet until stools firm. Cornell advises restarting the transition more gradually, over a week or two.
- Keep other food extras to a minimum. Avoid excessive treats and rich foods while diarrhea resolves.
- Contact your veterinarian if diarrhea persists. Cornell advises seeking veterinary care if it has not resolved within 48–72 hours; contact the clinic sooner if your dog seems unwell or symptoms are severe. Read Cornell’s guidance on diarrhea.
Do not assume the new food is necessarily the cause. Dietary indiscretion, stress, parasites, infection or inflammation, foreign bodies, allergies, toxicity, pancreatic disorders, and other illnesses can also cause diarrhea. Repeated or chronic digestive upset warrants veterinary evaluation.

When to call a veterinarian
Seek veterinary guidance for vomiting, continued lack of appetite, lethargy, weakness, abdominal discomfort, black or tarry stool, blood in the stool, severe symptoms, or symptoms that persist. The Animal Medical Center recommends prompt care when signs are severe or persistent, or appear with lethargy, weakness, abdominal discomfort, blood, or other indications of illness. Do not give human anti-diarrheal medicine unless your veterinarian directs you to: some medicines can harm dogs or interact with other medication.

For a general diet, Cornell advises choosing a commercial food that is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage. The veterinary guidance cited here does not establish one canned-food brand as best for preventing stomach upset. If your veterinarian has prescribed a diet, ask which food to use and how quickly to switch.

Gastrointestinal diets may be selected for qualities such as digestibility, fat level, novel ingredients, or fiber, and the right approach depends on the individual dog. UC Davis discusses these choices in its guidance on nutritional management of gastrointestinal disease. Do not start a therapeutic diet or fiber supplement without veterinary advice. A homemade bland diet is not balanced for long-term feeding; if your dog repeatedly needs one, ask a veterinarian to investigate the cause.
