How to Choose Canned Dog Food for Your Dog’s Nutritional Needs

Choose canned dog food by checking its complete-and-balanced statement and life-stage match first, then assess calories, moisture, manufacturer transparency, and your dog’s health needs.

Start with the nutritional adequacy statement—not the ingredient list or front-of-package claims. For a U.S. canned dog food, check that it is labeled “complete and balanced” for your dog’s life stage, then consider calories, feeding directions, the manufacturer’s nutrition and quality practices, and your dog’s individual health needs. There is no single best food for every dog.

1. Find the nutritional adequacy statement

On a U.S. package, look for the statement explaining whether the food is “complete and balanced” and which life stage it is intended for. The FDA says that claim is substantiated by meeting an AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profile or by passing an AAFCO-procedure feeding trial. It indicates the food is intended to provide a dog’s nutrition as the sole diet. FDA explains the statement and its basis.

Treats, snacks, and supplements are generally not intended to serve as a dog’s sole diet. If a can says it is for “intermittent or supplemental feeding only,” do not use it as the everyday complete diet unless your veterinarian has prescribed it for a specific purpose.

2. Match the life stage to your dog

Read the life-stage wording in the adequacy statement, not just a prominent phrase on the front of the can. FDA describes AAFCO profiles for growth and reproduction—including growing, pregnant, and nursing dogs—and for adult maintenance. “All life stages” is a distinct claim; it is not another way of saying “adult maintenance.” Choose a food whose stated life stage matches your dog.

3. Understand what the adequacy method tells you

A profile-based statement means the food is formulated to meet the specified nutrient profile. A feeding-trial statement means it was tested using AAFCO procedures. These are different ways to substantiate adequacy; neither proves that a food is the best choice for every dog or guarantees an outcome for an individual animal. The WSAVA nutrition guidelines advise considering the adequacy statement alongside other information about the food and the dog.

4. Check calories and feeding directions

Compare the calorie content per can or other stated unit, then use the package’s feeding directions as a starting point rather than a personalized prescription. The right amount depends on the dog. WSAVA’s Nutritional Assessment Guidelines recommend considering calorie density, particularly when a dog is above or below its desired body condition or needs an unusually large or small portion to maintain it.

5. Read guaranteed analysis with moisture in mind

Guaranteed-analysis percentages on U.S. labels are stated as fed, while AAFCO nutrient profiles are expressed on a dry-matter basis. Because canned and dry foods contain very different amounts of water, comparing their protein or fat percentages directly can mislead. The FDA gives typical moisture ranges of 75 to 78 percent for canned pet food and 10 to 12 percent for dry pet food; these are general ranges, not a guarantee for every product.

Convert percentages when moisture differs substantially

For a rough dry-matter comparison, calculate the food’s dry-matter percentage as 100 minus its moisture percentage. Divide the nutrient guarantee by that dry-matter percentage, then multiply by 100. For example, if a label lists 10% protein and 78% moisture, dry matter is 22%; 10 divided by 22, multiplied by 100, is about 45.5% protein on a dry-matter basis. This conversion puts values on a more comparable basis; it does not establish that either food is nutritionally superior or provide a complete nutritional evaluation. The FDA’s example uses cat food, so its species-specific protein threshold should not be applied as a dog-food rule. See the FDA’s dry-matter conversion explanation.

6. Look beyond the ingredient list and marketing

Ingredients on U.S. pet-food labels are listed in descending order of predominance by weight. That order does not, by itself, establish ingredient quality, digestibility, nutrient bioavailability, or the nutritional balance of the finished food. Nor does a “first ingredient” claim replace the adequacy statement. Grain-free, “natural,” “premium,” or an appealing ingredient list alone is not evidence that a food better meets your dog’s needs.

The WSAVA Nutrition Guidelines explain the limits of relying on ingredient lists alone and recommend looking into the company’s nutrition expertise and practices. FDA describes U.S. labeling requirements and notes that state rules may add requirements; many state rules use AAFCO model regulations. Canned pet food must also comply with FDA low-acid canned-food regulations, a food-safety requirement rather than evidence of nutritional superiority. FDA’s pet-food overview provides the regulatory context.

7. Ask the manufacturer useful questions

Contact the company if the package or its website does not answer practical questions. WSAVA recommends asking about the people and processes behind a food, not judging it solely by its label.

  • Who formulates the food, and what are their nutrition qualifications?
  • Is the adequacy claim based on nutrient-profile formulation or an AAFCO-procedure feeding trial?
  • Where is the food manufactured, and what quality-control procedures are used?
  • Can the company provide a typical nutrient analysis for the food?

8. Compare candidates against your dog’s needs

When you have more than one possible food, assess each against the same questions rather than choosing by a single marketing claim.

9. Involve your veterinarian when the choice is medical

Ask your veterinarian for individualized guidance if your dog has a diagnosed condition, takes medication, has an unusual body condition, or may need a therapeutic diet. FDA directs pet owners to a veterinarian for specific pet-health and diet questions. Its overview of FDA’s role in protecting animal health also clarifies that FDA does not review and approve each final packaged animal-food formulation before it is marketed; “FDA approved” is not the routine test for choosing a packaged dog food.

What “best” means for your dog

WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Committee puts the question plainly: “Your pet should be fed a complete and balanced diet (that provides all nutrients essential in the correct amounts and proportions) for its species and life stage from a reputable company.” Its FAQ and myths guidance also recognizes that health and other individual factors affect food selection. This checklist is based on U.S. label terminology; pet-food rules and label wording vary by country. For example, WSAVA notes that European labels should state whether a food is complete for a species and life stage or complementary.
