Give your newly adopted cat a quiet home-base room with food, water, litter, and safe places to hide. Let the cat decide when to explore or approach you; do not pull it out or force interaction. Hiding can be part of settling into an unfamiliar home, but changes in eating, drinking, toileting, grooming, play, or general health deserve attention rather than being dismissed as stress.
Why a newly adopted cat may hide
A new home brings unfamiliar smells, sounds, people, and routines. Hiding gives a cat a place to feel protected while it takes in those changes. The ASPCA notes that shy cats may need a few days or longer to adjust, and individual cats differ in how quickly they become comfortable. Hiding by itself does not establish that a cat is ill or that something is wrong.
Instead of treating hiding as misbehavior, make the space around the cat predictable and safe. The goal is not to make it come out on a schedule, but to let it build confidence at its own pace. ASPCA guidance for shy cats recommends patience and interaction on the cat’s terms.
Set up a quiet home-base room
Choose a quiet room where you can limit hazards and avoid frequent interruptions. Keep the cat’s basic needs close and accessible so it does not have to cross a busy part of the home to reach them.

- Food and water: Place them where the cat can reach them without being crowded.
- Litter: Provide a clean, accessible litter box.
- Resting spot: Add a comfortable place to rest.
- Hiding options: Offer a box, covered bed, or other suitable retreat. ASPCA recommends cozy hiding spaces at both low and high levels for shy cats.
Do not block the hiding place or reach inside to retrieve the cat. A box or an existing furniture hideaway may be enough; a special product is not required. Keep the room’s layout and access to essentials steady while the cat settles. The ASPCA’s home-base room guidance similarly recommends starting with one room and allowing exploration as the pet becomes comfortable.
Build trust without forcing contact
Spend quiet time in or near the room, doing something calm rather than focusing attention on the cat. Avoid staring, reaching into a hide, or repeatedly coaxing it out. Let the cat approach if and when it is ready. If it is comfortable taking treats, offering one can help make your presence positive; if it declines, leave it be.

Keep daily routines as consistent as possible. If other pets live in the home, keep their first contact controlled and gradual instead of bringing them straight into the newcomer’s safe room. International Cat Care recommends careful, gradual introductions in its kitten settling guidance; the same principle helps avoid overwhelming a new arrival.
Let the cat explore in stages
When the cat seems comfortable in its room, allow access to another part of the home in a controlled way. Keep the home-base room available as a retreat and make sure food, water, and litter remain accessible. If the cat retreats, let it do so. Expanding territory should follow signs of comfort, not a fixed deadline.

For kittens specifically, International Cat Care advises a quiet room for the first week or two while they adjust. That is kitten guidance, not a universal timetable for adult cats or every newly adopted cat.

International Cat Care’s kitten booklet mentions a Feliway diffuser in kitten-settling guidance, but it is an optional source-mentioned product, not a requirement. The guidance cited here does not establish that a diffuser is necessary or effective for every cat.

Monitor the whole picture, not hiding alone: whether the cat is eating and drinking, using the litter box, grooming, playing, and otherwise seeming well. International Cat Care lists hiding, reduced play, and changes in grooming or toileting among possible signs of longer-term distress. Its guidance on cats that will not eat also notes that appetite changes can have multiple causes, including stress and health concerns.

Contact a veterinarian if your cat is not eating or drinking normally, appears unwell, or has persistent or worsening changes in behavior or routine. Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or reduced food and water intake are sickness behaviors to take seriously. The sources cited here do not establish one universal number of hours or days after adoption when hiding becomes abnormal, so do not wait for a fixed deadline if your cat’s condition is concerning.
