Choose toys for the dogs who will use them: size shared toys for the largest dog, make sure each dog can use them comfortably, and match the toy to their chewing style and the job it needs to do. “Durable” does not mean unbreakable. Supervise play, inspect toys regularly, and manage access when competition or guarding could make sharing unsafe.
Start with the dogs, not the durability label
A toy must be large enough that no dog can swallow it or fit it whole in the mouth, yet comfortable for each dog to chew or play with. In a multi-dog home, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) advises sizing toys for the largest dog. That is a starting point, not a complete fit test: consider the smallest dog’s ability to use the toy and each dog’s mouth, jaw, and chewing habits. AAHA’s KONG sizing guidance explains this approach.
Look at what each dog actually does with toys. Some carry or chase them; others crush, strip, or swallow pieces. A toy that works for fetch may not be suitable for sustained chewing, and a food-filled enrichment toy has its own supervision and sharing considerations. Choose for the intended activity as well as the dog.
- For play and fetch: Check that the toy is an appropriate size and remove it if it tears or loses parts.
- For chewing: Match the material to the dog’s chewing intensity, while avoiding objects so hard they may damage teeth.
- For food enrichment: Supervise initial use and consider giving the toy to one dog at a time if food or novelty could trigger competition or guarding.
Balance toughness with the risks of hard or damaged toys
There is no material that is automatically safe for every dog. A toy can be too hard for teeth, or soft enough to tear into pieces a dog may swallow. Texas A&M’s veterinary guidance identifies risks from excessively hard toys, toys that can be broken apart and swallowed, rope fibers, and swallowed squeakers. Its advice is to supervise play, remove frayed rope toys, and seek veterinary guidance if you suspect a dog has swallowed part of a toy. See Texas A&M’s guide to potential toy hazards.

AAHA describes KONG Extreme as the manufacturer’s toughest rubber line, intended for power chewers who quickly destroy other toys, while the red Classic rubber is described as suitable for most adult dogs and average chewers. These are product-line descriptions, not guarantees of safety or lifespan for an individual dog. A durable rubber dog chew toy, including a KONG Extreme black rubber dog toy, is an option to consider only if its size, feel, and use suit the dog. The “toughest” label should not outweigh fit, supervision, or the dog’s dental needs.
For dogs with dental disease, sensitive mouths, age-related needs, or a history of swallowing toy pieces, ask a veterinarian for advice tailored to that dog rather than assuming a generic toy is suitable.

Inspect toys and replace them when they begin to fail
Check toys before and during use, especially when a dog is a vigorous chewer. Remove a toy if it becomes small enough to swallow, sheds pieces, exposes a squeaker, or develops frayed strands. Texas A&M advises removing toys when dogs chew off and swallow large pieces, and warns that very small toys may be swallowed or cause choking. Its dog-chew-toy guidance also recommends supervising rope play and removing frayed ropes.
Durable synthetic chews can wear down too. The ASPCA advises discarding them before excessive wear creates thin sections that can break off and be swallowed. The ASPCA’s position statement on dog chews and treats also emphasizes choosing products to suit a dog’s size and chewing habits and supervising use. Replace toys based on their condition and your dog’s behavior, not on a promise that a particular label means they will last a set amount of time.

Manage shared toys, chews, and food-filled enrichment
Dogs do not all need to share every toy. If one dog might guard a toy or another might rush to take it, give the item separately and supervise. For edible chew treats, Texas A&M recommends separating dogs to reduce competition and the urge to gulp before another dog can take the treat. This is guidance for chew treats; it does not mean every household must remove every shared non-edible toy.
Food-filled enrichment toys can also prompt guarding, particularly when they are new. VCA advises that pets may need separation using baby gates, doors, pens, or crates. VCA’s enrichment-toy guidance recommends supervision when pets first use these toys and recognizes that some pets guard novel, food-filled items.

Texas A&M includes storage among its toy-safety recommendations, while AAHA recommends sizing toys for the largest dog in a multi-dog home. Together, these steps help you avoid leaving an item available to a dog for whom its size or condition may be unsuitable.

Use a practical check before bringing a toy out
- Identify the users: Note which dogs can reach the toy and account for the largest dog’s mouth, as well as the smallest dog’s ability to use it comfortably.
- Match the purpose: Decide whether the toy is for fetch, chewing, or food enrichment, and consider how each dog uses that kind of item.
- Check likely failure points: Look for risks such as excessive hardness, tearing, fraying, exposed squeakers, or pieces small enough to swallow.
- Plan access: If competition or guarding is possible, supervise and separate dogs with a gate, door, pen, or crate as appropriate.
- Recheck during use: Take away and replace a toy as soon as it becomes damaged or unsafe for any dog who can access it.
