Barking, chewing, or toileting while you’re away can have several causes; no single behavior proves that a dog is bored or has separation anxiety. The clearest first clues are when the behavior starts, what else the dog does, and whether something in the environment sets it off. Video of an ordinary absence can help you spot a pattern, but a veterinarian must assess persistent or severe distress.
Start with timing and context
Separation-related distress is linked to a person preparing to leave or being absent. It may begin during the departure routine or soon after the person leaves. Merck Veterinary Manual says signs are often most severe in the first 15 to 30 minutes; the RSPCA describes signs that can emerge in the early period after departure, while AVSAB reports that many distressed dogs show signs within the first 10 minutes. These are useful observation windows, not diagnostic cutoffs: a dog’s behavior and history matter more than a clock.
Behavior that follows a sound or movement outside, occurs at other times, or also happens when people are home calls for a broader explanation. Barking may relate to outside triggers, frustration, loneliness, pain or distress, or unmet physical and mental needs. Long stretches without activity may contribute to boredom, but barking alone does not establish boredom.
Look for a pattern, not one symptom
Possible signs of separation-related distress include whining or howling, pacing, panting, trembling, salivation, repeated movement, toileting, destruction focused on doors or other exit points, inability to settle, and self-injury. A dog may show several signs together, but not every dog shows every sign. Chewing, barking, or toileting on its own is nonspecific.

- Departure-linked distress: restlessness or vocalizing during preparations or shortly after the person leaves may warrant closer attention.
- Several distress signs together: pacing, panting, whining, toileting, exit-focused damage, or an inability to settle form a more concerning pattern than one isolated behavior.
- A visible or audible trigger: barking that follows people, dogs, or noises outside may be related to that stimulus.
- Limited activity during long absences: boredom, loneliness, or frustration may contribute, but do not assume these explain every case.
- Not using a favorite food toy: a dog that normally enjoys a food toy but ignores it while alone may be worried. This is a clue, not a test.
Use video to document what happens
A camera or phone can show the order and timing of behaviors and whether an outside stimulus is present. Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Kelly Ballantyne describes video as the most effective and accurate way to tell whether a dog has separation anxiety; it records evidence, but does not diagnose the dog.
- Set up a camera or phone before a normal absence. Do not stage a long absence if your dog is already known to panic.
- Record the departure routine and the first 30 to 60 minutes after leaving. If practical, repeat on different days to see whether the pattern is consistent.
- Note the time, location, who is home or away, visible or audible triggers, activity opportunities, and the order of behaviors.
- Watch for early or subtle signs such as restlessness, panting, lip licking, whining, scanning, and repeated movement—not just barking or damage.
- If you offer a food toy, note whether your dog uses it while you are present and whether it uses it during an absence. A refusal may be relevant, but it does not settle the cause.
RSPCA guidance also recommends considering the dog’s environment, daily activity, and barking habits. A brief diary alongside video can help reveal whether behavior tracks departures, outside triggers, or particular routines.

What to do if your dog seems distressed
Don’t punish or wait out panic
Do not scold or punish a dog for behavior that happened while you were away. The dog cannot connect the punishment to the earlier behavior, and punishment can worsen anxiety. Do not rely on “cry it out” if your dog is showing panic.
Support welfare without treating enrichment as a cure
A walk, suitable activity, a calm routine, or an optional food toy can support welfare and enrichment. These steps do not show whether the cause is boredom or anxiety, and a toy is not a treatment for panic. Some distressed dogs will not eat or engage with a toy while alone.

Ask a veterinarian to assess persistent or serious signs
Share your recordings and notes with a veterinarian if the pattern persists, is severe, or includes self-injury, repeated toileting, or inability to settle. A veterinarian can review the behavioral history and consider medical contributors; diagnosis requires a careful history and consideration of other possible causes. When appropriate, the veterinarian may refer you to a qualified behavior professional. Treatment can combine environmental management and behavior modification, and some dogs need medication as part of a veterinarian-directed plan.

The RSPCA page on separation-related behavior says that 8 out of 10 dogs find it hard to cope when left alone and that half will not show obvious signs when their owners are with them. The page does not identify the underlying study in the text reviewed, so treat those figures as the RSPCA’s reported figures, not as a universal prevalence estimate or a way to diagnose an individual dog.
