Dogs often greet their owners enthusiastically because coming home is a social reunion: it brings attention and the chance to make contact after time apart. A more animated greeting after a longer absence has been reported in a study, but excitement at the door alone does not show that a dog was distressed while home alone or has separation anxiety.
Why coming home can prompt an enthusiastic greeting
Dogs form social relationships with people, and a returning owner is a familiar person reappearing after an absence. The greeting may include tail-wagging, approaching, seeking contact, or paying close attention. How a dog greets someone varies; there is no single response every dog should show.
A 2011 questionnaire and experimental study reported that longer separations were associated with more dog-initiated interaction, tail-wagging, and attentive behavior directed at the owner after reunion. That is an association in the study, not a rule for every dog or evidence that the dog suffered during the absence. Konok and colleagues, Applied Animal Behaviour Science (2011).
What a greeting can—and cannot—tell you
A greeting is an observable behavior, not a direct window into a dog’s subjective feelings. In a 2021 field study, 19 volunteer owners and their dogs were followed for two weeks with activity trackers and daily owner questionnaires. The researchers found correlations between measured activity and owners’ reports of affect around reunion, but noted that correlation does not establish cause and the ratings reflected owners’ perceptions. The study was small, uncontrolled, and excluded dogs with known health or behavioral challenges. Väätäjä and colleagues, Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2021).

Activity trackers can indicate movement or rest; they cannot, by themselves, establish whether a dog is happy or describe its welfare. As the study authors put it, “Following the dog’s activity levels does not directly tell about the welfare or happiness of the dog.”
How to interpret your dog’s behavior around your workday
Instead of judging by the doorway greeting alone, look at the broader pattern: before you leave, during the time your dog is alone, and after you return. These observations can help describe what is happening, but they are not a validated diagnostic checklist.

- Before departure: Notice whether your dog appears unsettled as you prepare to leave.
- While alone: Consider whether there is persistent vocalization or destructive behavior, rather than assuming what happens from the greeting.
- After you return: Notice how the greeting unfolds and whether your dog can settle afterward.
- Across days: Look for a persistent pattern, not one unusually energetic or subdued reunion.
If the overall pattern suggests sustained distress while alone, discuss it with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. A lively greeting by itself is not enough to diagnose separation anxiety.

No universal greeting rule follows from the available evidence. In a 2014 experiment, dogs were reunited with a familiar person who either initiated calm physical and verbal contact, verbal contact only, or ignored the dog. The PubMed record reports that dogs in the physical-and-verbal condition initiated more physical contact and showed more lip licking. The experiment examined specific reunion conditions; it does not establish that all owners should ignore a greeting. Physiology & Behavior (2014), PubMed record.

Research on whether excited greetings contribute to separation-related behaviors is conflicting. A 2024 longitudinal paper examining dogs at six months discusses this uncertainty; ordinary enthusiasm should not be treated as proof that an owner has caused separation anxiety.
