There is no reliable number of hours that applies to every freshwater aquarium fish. Survival depends on how quickly dissolved oxygen falls and how long it stays low. If fish are gasping at the surface, treat it as an emergency and restore aeration immediately rather than waiting to see how long they can last.
What “without oxygen” means for aquarium fish
Fish take up oxygen dissolved in water through their gills; they cannot use oxygen from the air in the same way a land animal does. A filter return, air stone, or other circulation helps exchange gases at the water’s surface and replenish dissolved oxygen. The U.S. Geological Survey explains dissolved oxygen in water and notes the role of an aeration device in a home aquarium.
A stopped air pump or filter does not instantly remove all oxygen from a tank. Instead, oxygen is consumed by fish and other organisms while slower surface exchange replaces it. The danger is the resulting decline, not simply the loss of a particular device.
How low oxygen affects fish
UF/IFAS reports that most fish species show distress when dissolved oxygen (DO) falls to 2–4 mg/L, and that mortality usually occurs below 2 mg/L. These are general thresholds, not a clock or a guarantee for an individual fish: risk also depends on how low DO falls and how long it remains there. See UF/IFAS guidance on dissolved oxygen in pond aquaculture.

- Steady Output: Max Air Flow Rate: 64 GPH; Pressure: 0.016 MPa; Power: 4 W. Perfect for aeration in 10 - 100 gallon fresh water and marine aquariums.(The data is measured with experimental equipment and may deviate slightly from the actual data. The air volume may be insufficient due to the blocked air intake cotton. Please replace the cotton yourself if the air volume is insufficient.)
- Adjustable Air Flow: Feature a rotary knob to control the amount of air for dual outputs, allowing for your desired air flow to fully oxygenate your fish tank.
- Quiet Operation: The pump emits 25 dB sound under the “Low” mode and maximum 45 dB noise like the hum of a refrigerator under the highest air flow.
- 2 Air Stone Discs: Produce lots of dense medium bubbles bursting into the surface of water steadily. A great way to aerate your tanks and enliven the aquatic life.
- Pump Accessories: Include 2 air stones, 6.5-foot airline tubing, 2 check valves and 2 connectors. Complete accessories to build the basic aeration setup in your tank.
For context, Penn State Extension says ponds with low DO may be at 2 mg/L or less, while saturated ponds may reach 14 mg/L or higher; fish can tolerate lower levels only for limited periods. Those pond values are context, not target readings or a survival-time chart for an aquarium. See Penn State Extension’s pond fish health guidance.
Why one tank may lose its safety margin faster
Temperature and time of day
Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water. Oxygen can also reach its daily low before morning: photosynthesis stops at night, but fish, plants, algae, and microbes continue to respire. A tank with marginal circulation may therefore be at greater risk overnight.

- Steady Output: Max Air Flow Rate: 50 GPH; Pressure: 0.013 MPa; Power: 1.25 W. The pump supplies steady air flow with low power consumption. Work great for fish tanks or buckets up to 60 gallons.
- Adjustable Air Flow: There is a rotatable knob on the top to manually adjust the air volume. Greatly meet your desired air flow to keep fish or roots healthy.
- Quiet Operation: With 4 shockproof rubber feet to minimize vibration, the pump greatly reduces noise to less than 30 dB like a soft speaking voice. No disturbance to your daily life.
- Reliable Construction: The fish tank pump is well constructed with a sturdy ABS shell and a heavy-duty inner structure. Really lightweight and space-saving.
- Pump Accessories: Contain 6.5-foot 3/16" airline tubing (ID: 4 mm), 2 small air stone cylinders, 2 connectors (straight & T-shape) and 2 check valves. All build the basic aeration setup in your fish tank.
Stocking, waste, and decomposition
More fish and other organisms use oxygen. Decaying plants, uneaten food, algae die-offs, and other organic matter also raise oxygen demand as they decompose. Overfeeding or allowing a large mass of material to decay can worsen depletion.
Surface movement and tank conditions
A still surface exchanges gas more slowly than a disturbed one. Filter returns and air stones help by moving water and increasing air–water contact. Species vary in sensitivity, and larger fish are often affected sooner during depletion events. Together, these factors make a fixed estimate such as “a fish can last X hours” unreliable.

What to do if fish are gasping or the power is out
Gasping at the surface (sometimes called piping), rapid gill movement, lethargy, or several fish gathering near the surface are warning signs. UF/IFAS recommends emergency aeration when fish show signs of oxygen depletion or measured DO is below 4 mg/L. If fish are visibly gasping, do not delay aeration while waiting for a test.
- Restore water movement now. Restart the filter if it is safe to do so, angle its return toward the surface, or run an air pump with an air stone.
- If mains power is unavailable, use backup aeration. A battery- or USB-powered air pump can keep the surface moving during an outage.
- Measure dissolved oxygen if you have a reliable test. Use the result to inform next steps, but do not let testing postpone emergency aeration.
- Pause feeding and remove obvious decaying material. This limits additional oxygen demand from uneaten food and decomposition.
- Once aeration is restored, check the wider system. Check temperature, ammonia, nitrite, and filter operation; gasping can have causes other than low oxygen, and a stopped filter can affect more than circulation.
How to prepare for an outage
- Maintain dependable surface agitation and avoid overstocking or overfeeding.
- Keep filter media clear enough for flow, but clean or replace it in a way that does not destroy the biological filter.
- Keep a charged backup air pump and an air stone ready before an outage. For a battery-powered pump, check whether it switches over automatically or needs to be turned on manually.
- Pay particular attention to overnight and pre-dawn conditions, when oxygen may be at its daily low.
Runtime is specific to the pump and operating mode; it does not guarantee that fish will survive for that long. For example, Aquarium Co-Op documents a rechargeable pump that switches to battery operation automatically when power fails and lists about 20 hours of continuous operation, or 40 hours or more in power-save mode. See the manufacturer’s product information for that model. Other pumps may differ, so check their stated runtime and operation instructions.
