What Fish Get Along With Clownfish? A Guide to Safe Tank Mates

Gobies, blennies, cardinalfish and other peaceful fish may share a tank with clownfish, but compatibility depends on species, adult size, space and territory.

Gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, dartfish, firefish, peaceful wrasses and basslets are common clownfish tank-mate choices. They tend to be better bets than aggressive or highly territorial fish, but no pairing is guaranteed: the exact species, adult size, aquarium footprint and individual temperament all matter. Choose companions only after accounting for your clownfish’s territory and the needs of every fish in the tank.

Which fish are usually good clownfish tank mates?

Clownfish are marine fish, not freshwater community fish. They need a stable saltwater aquarium with suitable filtration and routine water testing. Since clownfish may defend a chosen rock, coral or anemone—especially as a bonded pair—companions that use different parts of the aquarium and do not compete strongly for territory are often the safer starting point.

Tank-mate group Why it may work What to check
Gobies and blennies Many are small, peaceful fish that perch or use bottom areas rather than sharing the clownfish’s midwater space. Check the exact species’ minimum tank size, adult size and feeding needs.
Cardinalfish Commonly listed as compatible with clownfish. Avoid crowding and consider the species’ social behavior.
Dartfish and firefish Peaceful choices for a suitable marine community. Provide hiding places and a secure lid; these fish can jump.
Peaceful wrasses and basslets May suit a mature marine aquarium with enough room. Choose a genuinely peaceful species and verify its adult size and care needs.
Tangs and dwarf angelfish Possible options in larger aquariums. Allow for adult size, swimming space and individual temperament; do not treat these as small-tank choices.

Some care lists also include hawkfish, pseudochromis, puffers, hogfish, foxface or rabbitfish, and butterflyfish. Those names are not blanket endorsements: aggression, adult size, diet, reef compatibility and the particular clownfish’s behavior can change the outcome. Assess the exact species before buying.

Which fish should you avoid or approach cautiously?

Other clownfish

Adding another clownfish can lead to serious territorial conflict, whether the fish are the same species or different species. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) recommends keeping clownfish as a male-female pair and warns that fish may be bullied in groups. Maroon clownfish are especially territorial; Petco advises keeping them singly unless they are a mated pair. Identify your clownfish species before considering any pairing.

  • Robust & Clear: Made of strong plastic, the fish breeder won’t warp or crack easily. The high transparency enables you to monitor fish behavior and breeding activities without any barriers, bringing you endless enjoyment

Aggressive or predatory fish

Aggressive damselfish, dottybacks, triggerfish and predatory fish can harass clownfish, compete for territory or eat smaller tankmates. There is no universal blacklist that settles every pairing, so compare the exact species’ adult size, temperament and diet rather than relying on a group name alone.

Large, active fish in undersized tanks

A fish that is nominally compatible can still create chronic stress or water-quality problems if the aquarium lacks sufficient footprint and capacity. A shared tank must accommodate each fish at adult size, not just when it is purchased.

Butterflyfish around anemones

Monterey Bay Aquarium notes that clownfish defend their anemone by driving away butterflyfish and other anemone-eating fish. A butterflyfish-and-anemone setup is therefore a specialized choice for a suitably large aquarium, not an automatic community pairing.

How much space and what water conditions do clownfish need?

Published minimums differ by source and the fish being kept. PetMD (2026) says one adult clownfish needs an aquarium of at least 29 gallons. OATA (2022) recommends at least 60 litres for a pair of smaller species, such as common or percula clownfish, and at least 120 litres for larger species. OATA also advises a larger aquarium when other species are added. Treat these as minimum guidance, not a guarantee that a particular mix of fish will thrive; adult size, territory and swimming room still matter.

PetMD (2026) and Petco (2024) give a temperature range of 74–80°F and specific gravity of 1.020–1.025 for clownfish. Use a marine refractometer to check salinity rather than estimating it. Keep filtration appropriately sized and flow moderate. PetMD says a protein skimmer can support water quality and dissolved oxygen; OATA explains that it removes dissolved organic waste before it breaks down.

OATA recommends checking water quality regularly, once a week, and says ammonia and nitrite should be zero before adding fish. After stocking, PetMD advises monitoring pH, ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. A saltwater aquarium test kit makes routine checks practical; respond to poor results before adding more fish.

Do clownfish need an anemone?

No. OATA states that anemones are not required to keep clownfish successfully in aquariums. Bulk Reef Supply (BRS) similarly notes that clownfish may use rock or coral instead. In captivity, a host anemone is optional, but it adds its own care requirements and can make the clownfish more protective of a specific area.

Add an anemone only if the aquarium’s maturity, lighting, flow and the anemone species’ needs are appropriate. Consider how its presence could affect tank-mate choices, particularly fish that eat anemones.

How do pair behavior and species affect compatibility?

Clownfish are not uniformly peaceful. The dominant fish grows larger and becomes female. OATA recommends starting with two juveniles so they can form a male-female pair naturally; once bonded, a pair may vigorously defend a small territory. Smaller ocellaris or percula clownfish are generally a lower-risk starting point for a mixed community than highly territorial maroon clownfish, but individual behavior still matters.

Before choosing a companion, identify the exact clownfish species and check the adult size and care needs of both fish. A peaceful species can still be a poor match if it needs more space, food or shelter than the aquarium provides.

How should you introduce tank mates?

  1. Confirm capacity first. Check that the aquarium’s footprint and volume suit every fish at adult size, and that its water is stable with ammonia and nitrite at zero.
  2. Quarantine and acclimate new fish. Follow a marine-aquarium protocol appropriate to the fish and your system before placing it in the display tank.
  3. Add fish gradually. PetMD advises introducing tankmates slowly and watching closely for signs of aggression or stress. Avoid adding several new fish at once, which can make behavior and water-quality problems harder to identify.
  4. Observe feeding and territory. Watch for persistent chasing, hiding, missed meals, injury or other signs that a fish is under stress.
  5. Separate fish if needed. If fighting persists or causes injury or stress, be prepared to remove the aggressor or otherwise separate the fish rather than waiting for the conflict to resolve on its own.

Should you choose captive-bred clownfish?

When available, captive-bred fish are the preferred sourcing direction. Monterey Bay Aquarium advises home-aquarium keepers to buy fish raised in captivity rather than wild-collected fish, and Petco states that it carries tank-raised clownfish. Availability varies, so check that any fish you buy is healthy and feeding; captive breeding alone does not guarantee a good fit with existing tankmates.
