The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest living fish, and it lives in the Pacific. But the best-documented record-sized individuals in the available records were measured or captured outside the Pacific. That makes the whale shark the answer to “What is the biggest fish in the Pacific?”—not a verified claim that the largest individual ever spotted was there.
What is the biggest fish in the Pacific?
It is the whale shark. Despite its name, a whale shark is a fish, not a whale or other mammal. NOAA describes it as the biggest fish in the ocean, while the Convention on Migratory Species calls it the world’s largest living fish. Whale sharks inhabit tropical and warm-temperate waters, including the Pacific.
The distinction is between a species and an individual. The whale shark is the largest fish species found in the Pacific; the record-length specimens cited here were documented in the Arabian Sea, and the heaviest cited specimen was captured near Karachi, Pakistan. The available records do not establish a particular Pacific individual as the largest whale shark ever spotted.
How big are the record whale sharks?
Length and weight records refer to different animals, and the evidence behind them differs. Guinness World Records lists an 18.8 m (61 ft 8 in) female measured in the Arabian Sea off Veraval, India, on 8 May 2001. Guinness separately records a whale shark captured off Baba Island near Karachi, Pakistan, on 11 November 1949, at 12.65 m (41 ft 6 in) long and an estimated 21.5 tonnes (47,000 lb).

| Record | Individual and location | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Longest scientifically documented | Female whale shark, Arabian Sea off Veraval, India; measured 8 May 2001 | 18.8 m (61 ft 8 in) long, as reported by Guinness World Records and BOEM. |
| Heaviest cited documented specimen | Whale shark captured near Karachi, Pakistan, on 11 November 1949 | 12.65 m (41 ft 6 in) long; estimated 21.5 tonnes (47,000 lb), according to Guinness World Records. |
These are not competing measurements of one shark: one is the longest scientifically documented individual cited here, and the other is a different, captured specimen with an estimated mass. Neither record is a Pacific sighting. National Geographic Education gives average adult size as 9.8 m and 9 metric tons, figures that provide context rather than a record maximum.
Why a Pacific whale shark can travel far from where it is seen
Whale sharks move across ocean basins. Smithsonian researchers reported that a female tagged near Coiba Island in the eastern Pacific traveled 20,142 km (more than 12,000 miles) toward the western Indo-Pacific. In the Smithsonian’s 2018 report, that was the longest recorded trans-Pacific whale-shark migration at the time. A sighting in one part of the Pacific therefore does not mean an individual stays in that region.

What whale sharks eat—and whether they are dangerous
Whale sharks are filter feeders. They consume plankton and other small prey, including small crustaceans, squid, schooling fish, and small fish. Aquarium of the Pacific says their modified gill rakers can filter particles as small as 1 mm. Their immense size can be startling, but they are generally docile toward divers; do not touch, chase, or obstruct one.

The Convention on Migratory Species lists the whale shark as Endangered. Its size does not make it invulnerable: it is a migratory animal whose movements span national waters, making conservation across its range important.
