To reduce cat litter around the house, put a textured litter mat where your cat steps out, keep the box and surrounding floor clean, and check whether the box gives your cat enough room to dig and turn. These steps can catch or prevent some scatter, but no mat, box, or litter type is proven to stop tracking completely. Make changes gradually and keep your cat’s comfort and reliable box use as the priority.
Why cat litter tracks around the house
Granules can cling to a cat’s paws or fur after using the box, or land outside it when the cat digs. Dust, a box that is too small, a dirty box, and no surface to catch litter near the exit can also contribute. Where you see the mess can help you decide what to try: litter scattered over the box’s edge may point to digging or limited space, while granules carried farther away may make a mat worth trying. That is a practical clue, not a definitive test.
Start with a litter-trapping mat
Place a textured mat directly beside or partly under the box, covering the route your cat takes when leaving. Its surface can catch some loose granules and pull litter from paws. Keep it clean and easy to empty so caught litter does not build up. Choose one your cat will actually step on and that stays in place; no particular size or texture is established as best for every cat.
Keep the box and surrounding floor clean
Scoop the litter box every day, and clean the entire box at least once a week, as Merck Veterinary Manual advises. Sweep or vacuum around the box routinely so loose granules do not get carried through the home. Cleaning is not a substitute for addressing the cause of scatter, but it limits how far stray litter travels.

Check whether the box suits your cat
Make room for digging and turning
A roomy box gives a cat space to dig and turn around. Dr. Nick Roman, DVM, MPH, of College Station Cat Clinic, writes in the Merck Veterinary Manual: “Larger litter boxes are better. Cats like plenty of space to dig and be able to turn around.” If your cat kicks litter over the edge, more interior room or higher sides may help contain scatter, but the cat must still be able to enter comfortably.
Balance higher sides with easy access
High sides can help contain litter for a cat that kicks it out, but a high entry can be difficult for kittens, older cats, or cats with mobility problems. Consider an accessible entrance rather than making the whole box hard to get into. Covered boxes contain mess for some cats, but others dislike an enclosed space; observe your cat’s preference rather than assuming a lid will solve the problem.

Consider litter carefully—and preserve what your cat accepts
Dust may contribute to litter clinging to paws, so a low-dust option may be worth considering if tracking persists. Litter preference is individual: many cats prefer small, clumping particles, and Merck often recommends unscented litter. Veterinary Information Network guidance also cautions against switching brands or types once a cat accepts one. If you decide to change, do so cautiously and watch for any reluctance to use the box. A cleaner floor is not a useful trade if your cat avoids the litter box.
Purina, a litter manufacturer, also recommends litter choices and products in its advice on tracking. Treat its named brand examples as company recommendations, not independent evidence that one litter reduces tracking better than another.

Change one thing at a time
- Place a mat at the exit. Position it where your cat steps out, then keep it clean.
- Maintain the cleanup routine. Scoop daily, clean the full box at least weekly, and sweep or vacuum nearby.
- Watch where litter lands. Scatter over the edge may suggest a box-size or digging issue; litter carried away on paws may make a mat or, cautiously, a litter change worth considering.
- Adjust the box only if needed. Preserve enough room to dig and turn, and make sure the entry suits your cat’s age and mobility.
- Monitor box use. If your cat seems uncomfortable or starts avoiding the box, reconsider the change and contact a veterinarian if the problem continues.
There are no established comparative results showing how much a particular mat, box design, or litter change reduces tracking. When comparing products, focus on whether your cat uses the mat or box comfortably, how easy each is to clean, whether it stays in place, and whether the litter is acceptable to your cat.

Ordinary granules outside the box are a cleanup issue. Urinating or defecating outside the box, crying, straining, or repeatedly visiting without producing normal output is different and can have medical or behavioral causes. Contact a veterinarian about new or persistent toileting changes; straining warrants urgent veterinary guidance.
