Clumping litter makes routine cleanup easier because you can scoop out urine clumps and solid waste while leaving the rest in the box. Non-clumping litter absorbs liquid but does not form scoopable clumps, so the litter bed generally needs more frequent replacement. Choose based on your cat’s comfort, the product’s material and dust level, and the cleanup routine you can maintain.
What is the difference between clumping and non-clumping litter?
The distinction is how each litter handles urine. Clumping litter binds around liquid waste to form clumps that can be lifted out. Non-clumping litter absorbs moisture but leaves it in the litter bed until you remove or replace the soiled litter. The exact handling and change instructions vary by product, so follow the label.
| Feature | Clumping litter | Non-clumping litter |
|---|---|---|
| Urine handling | Forms removable clumps when wet. | Absorbs moisture without forming scoopable clumps. |
| Routine cleanup | Scoop urine clumps and feces; top up or replace litter as directed. | Remove waste and replace the litter more often, as directed. |
| Material | Often clay, but clumping plant-based formulas are also available. | May be clay, crystals, paper, wood, or other pellet and plant-based materials. |
| Dust | Varies by product. | Varies by product. |
| Odor control | Removing urine clumps can help limit odor; results depend on the formula and cleaning. | Soiled absorbent litter remains until it is changed, so timely replacement matters. |
These categories do not tell you by themselves whether a litter is dusty, scented, or comfortable for your cat. Compare the actual material, texture, fragrance, and product directions rather than assuming all clumping litter is clay or all non-clumping litter behaves alike. PetMD’s overview of cat litter types discusses the differences between products.
Which type is easier to clean?
Clumping litter is often more convenient for daily scooping: remove the clumps and solid waste, then keep the clean litter in the box. With non-clumping litter, liquid waste is absorbed rather than lifted out as a clump, so you will generally need to replace the litter more frequently. How often depends on the product, the box, and household use; follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying one schedule to every litter.

#1 Best Overall
- FRESH STEP CLUMPING CAT LITTER: One 14 lb. box of Fresh Step Multi Cat Clumping Litter, Extra Strength Formula With Febreze Freshness, designed for multi cat homes.

- RAPID LIQUID ABSORPTION: Fresh Step Clumping Cat Litter quickly absorbs liquid, ensuring a dry and clean litter box environment for your cat's comfort.
- FORMS TIGHT CLUMPS: Fresh Step ClumpLock technology locks in liquid and odor on contact and causes immediate kitty litter clumping to make scooping easy and prevent crumbles from being left behind.
- FRESH, CLEAN SMELL: Fresh Step clumping cat litter with Febreze freshness is an effective litter box odor fighter that helps keep your cat’s litter box smelling fresh, clean and inviting.
Odor is not an automatic win for either category. Scooping promptly and changing litter as directed are important, and a product’s formulation affects how it performs. If odor persists despite routine cleaning, review the product directions and the box-cleaning routine rather than assuming a different category alone will solve it. PetMD describes clumping and absorbent litter options; a specific product’s instructions take precedence for its use.
How should you choose for your cat?
Start with what your cat will reliably use. Veterinary Partner notes that many cats prefer small, clumping particles, and that unscented clay-clumping litter can be a useful starting point; scented or odor-repellant products may put some cats off. That is a general preference, not a guarantee for an individual cat. Veterinary Partner’s litter-box guidance and the Merck Veterinary Manual both emphasize that cats’ preferences matter.
Rank #2
- PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
- LOW DUST: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation.
- HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
- SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
- LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
- Consider texture and scent: If your cat avoids a scented litter, try an unscented option. If a different material or particle shape is better accepted, prioritize continued box use over the category label.
- Consider dust and health: Dust levels vary across products of both types. If your cat has respiratory sensitivities or other health concerns, ask your veterinarian about suitable options; do not assume a category is dust-free.
- Consider your cleaning routine: Choose a product whose scooping and replacement directions you can follow consistently.
- Change gradually: VCA recommends taking the cat’s preferences and health into account and introducing a new litter gradually. VCA’s comparison of litter types provides further guidance.
Is clumping litter okay for kittens?
A kitten that mouths or eats litter needs individual guidance. A veterinary-reviewed Chewy guide advises that young kittens who might eat litter may be better suited to non-clumping options. The available guidance does not establish a universal age at which every kitten should switch to clumping litter, nor does it establish that every clumping material causes harm. Ask the veterinarian or rescue familiar with the kitten what to use, especially if you see the kitten eating litter.

Do not assume that a “flushable” claim makes a litter suitable for your plumbing or local waste system. PetMD recommends bagging used litter for trash and cautions that plumbing systems may not handle products marketed as flushable. Check the package and local disposal rules. For example, a Health Canada label for one unscented bentonite clumping litter directs users to put it in household garbage and not flush it into toilets or septic systems. That label applies to that product; it is not a universal instruction for every litter.

How do you decide between the two?
- Check your cat’s needs. Account for texture and scent preferences, dust sensitivity, health concerns, and whether a kitten mouths litter.
- Compare specific products. Look at material, particle size, fragrance, dust information, and the manufacturer’s cleanup and change directions.
- Choose the routine you can maintain. Clumping litter usually allows more frequent removal of urine waste without replacing the whole bed; non-clumping litter generally calls for more frequent full changes.
- Watch how your cat responds. Introduce a new litter gradually and pay attention to whether your cat continues using the box. If your cat starts eliminating outside the box, the Merck Veterinary Manual notes that illness or behavioral problems can be involved; consult a veterinarian rather than treating litter preference as the only possible cause.
