For an orphaned or mother-separated puppy, use commercial puppy milk replacer and a puppy nursing bottle with a slow, controlled flow. Feed the puppy belly-down with its head in a neutral position, and set the amount and timing with the formula label and a veterinarian. Newborns need frequent feeds, but schedules vary by age, size, and health.

What you need to bottle-feed a puppy

  • Commercial puppy milk replacer: Choose a replacer formulated for puppies and prepare it exactly as its label directs. VCA recommends it over cow’s milk or homemade mixtures; Best Friends Animal Society also recommends commercial puppy milk replacer for complete nutrition. See VCA’s orphaned-puppy feeding guidance and Best Friends’ orphaned-puppy care guide.
  • A puppy or small-animal nursing bottle and nipple: Most puppies can suckle from a small pet nursing bottle. Use a nipple that does not let formula pour or run freely. VCA describes a flow of about one drop at a time or a nipple that drips with minimal squeezing; Best Friends says the bottle should require a light squeeze. If you are unsure whether the nipple is safe, ask a veterinarian to check it.
  • Cleaning and storage supplies: VCA recommends cleaning and boiling bottles and nipples between uses. Refrigerate prepared formula, and discard any formula that has been at room temperature for one hour. Best Friends advises refrigerating opened or reconstituted formula and discarding it after 24 hours; follow the product label if it gives more specific instructions.

How often to feed an orphaned puppy

There is no single schedule that fits every puppy. Use the replacer’s label and ask a veterinarian to set amounts and timing for the puppy’s age, weight, and condition. Published guidance differs: VCA advises feeding every 2–4 hours during the first week, then every 4–6 hours until weaning; Best Friends says newborns need feeds every 2–3 hours around the clock. Best Friends also says six or eight evenly spaced meals are sufficient for most puppies, while small or weak puppies may need more frequent attention.

VCA gives these general energy requirements by age: 15 kcal per 100 g of body weight on days 1–3, 20 kcal per 100 g on days 4–6, and up to 25 kcal per 100 g after day 6. These are VCA’s general recommendations, not a universal feeding amount or a replacement for the formula label and veterinary assessment. VCA advises increasing amounts gradually during the first week and cautions against overfeeding. Read VCA’s feeding guidance.

How to feed safely

  1. Warm the formula carefully. VCA’s guidance gives approximately 100°F (38°C); its orphan-care article gives 95–100°F (35–37.8°C), and Best Friends recommends body temperature, about 100°F, for newborns. Do not overheat the formula. VCA’s feeding guidance, VCA’s orphaned-puppy care article, and Best Friends’ guide provide these recommendations.
  2. Position the puppy belly-down or horizontally. Keep its head level or neutral, as it would be while nursing from its mother. Never feed it on its back.
  3. Let the puppy suckle at a controlled pace. Do not force formula into its mouth or squeeze it in quickly. Rapid flow can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, or death; VCA warns that cold formula, overly rapid feeding, and overfeeding can also cause regurgitation, bloating, and diarrhea.
  4. Burp the puppy after feeding. Best Friends recommends burping after a feed.
  5. Get veterinary help if the puppy cannot suckle. A puppy too weak to nurse may need a different feeding method. Tube feeding requires suitable equipment and training; formula entering the lungs can cause serious harm. Ask a veterinarian to demonstrate any alternative method rather than attempting it on your own. See VCA’s orphan-care guidance and Best Friends’ guide.

Care after feeding: elimination and weaning

Help very young puppies eliminate

Orphaned puppies may need gentle stimulation after feeding to urinate and defecate until they can eliminate by themselves, at about three weeks of age. Use a warm, moistened cotton ball or soft cloth. VCA’s orphan-care article says this may be needed during the first two weeks; follow your veterinarian’s advice for the individual puppy. VCA’s feeding guidance and orphan-care article explain this care.
