Usually, no—not as a safe default. Tropical aquarium water may be too warm for some salamanders, some salamanders prey on fish, and many species need land or a different habitat as adults. Because salamanders’ needs vary by species and life stage, keep them separate unless an amphibian-experienced veterinarian or species specialist has assessed the exact pairing and setup.
Why a tropical fish tank may not suit a salamander
Temperature needs can conflict
There is no single temperature for all salamanders. The Merck Veterinary Manual explains that an amphibian’s preferred optimal temperature zone varies by species and that caudatans (salamanders and newts) generally prefer cooler temperatures than frogs and toads. Its general housing guidance gives 16–21°C for most amphibians and 24–27°C for tropical species; these are broad reference ranges, not prescriptions for every animal. Fish may become prey—or pose a risk themselves
Some salamanders eat fish. The Smithsonian describes Japanese giant salamanders as aquatic animals of cold, fast-flowing water that eat fish as well as insects, crayfish, snails, and small mammals. That example shows why the exact salamander matters; it does not mean all salamanders eat all fish. Conversely, fish could nip or injure an amphibian. Adult habitat may be different from juvenile habitat
Many salamanders begin life as aquatic larvae, then change as they mature. The Royal Veterinary College says most pet salamanders become terrestrial as adults and recommends semi-aquatic adult housing. An aquatic juvenile is not evidence that an aquarium will meet its adult needs; identify the species and plan for its adult form. RVC Salamander Care.

Water quality is especially important
Amphibian skin is permeable, so contaminants in water can harm the animal. Merck says amphibian water should be free of chlorine, ammonia, nitrite, pesticides, and heavy metals. For aquatic setups, it recommends weekly checks of temperature, pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate; biological filtration can help maintain safe water. A tank suitable for fish is not automatically suitable for an amphibian.
How to assess a specific salamander-and-fish pairing
Do not choose tankmates from a generic “compatible fish” list. First identify both species, then check the following together with an amphibian-experienced veterinarian or species authority:

- Temperature: Can the enclosure stay within both species’ appropriate ranges year-round?
- Adult size and behavior: Consider the salamander’s adult size, mouth size, and feeding behavior, as well as whether fish might nip or injure it.
- Habitat: Does the salamander need fully aquatic, semi-aquatic, or terrestrial housing as an adult, including access to land where appropriate?
- Water conditions: Can you maintain suitable chemistry, low contaminant levels, filtration, and current without compromising either animal?
- Feeding and waste: Can both animals eat appropriately without competition, unsafe leftover food, or excess waste?
- Disease control: Ask about quarantine and whether separate enclosures or equipment are warranted.
These checks reflect veterinary husbandry guidance and species-specific risks; without exact species identification, the direction and severity of each risk cannot be determined. Agriculture Victoria’s captive-amphibian code also recommends professional advice for the particular species and attention to adult size and social needs. What to do before housing them together
- Identify both animals to species. Common names alone may not establish their adult habitat, temperature, or diet needs.
- Use adult care requirements. Confirm whether the salamander remains aquatic or needs land as it matures.
- Get a pairing-specific assessment. Consult an amphibian-experienced veterinarian or qualified species specialist before introducing either animal to the other’s enclosure.
- Maintain and monitor the enclosure independently. For an aquatic amphibian setup, Merck recommends weekly testing of temperature, pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. A thermometer and suitable water-test kit help monitor a properly designed habitat; neither makes incompatible tankmates safe.
