Yes—most dogs can eat a little sweet potato if it is fully cooked, peeled, plain, and served in small pieces. Treat it as an occasional snack or food topper, not a substitute for complete and balanced dog food. If your dog has diabetes, weight or dietary concerns, or eats a prescription diet, ask your veterinarian before adding it.

How to prepare sweet potato for a dog

  1. Wash and peel it. The skin is not described as toxic, but it can be harder to digest. The American Kennel Club quotes veterinarian Dr. Rachel Barrack: “When feeding your dog a sweet potato, make sure it’s cooked and that the skin is removed; leaving the skin on makes it harder for your dog to digest.”
  2. Cook it until completely soft. You can steam, boil, bake, or microwave it. Do not serve it raw or leave firm chunks.
  3. Mash it or cut it into small, soft pieces. Let it cool to a safe temperature before serving.
  4. Keep it plain. Do not add butter, oil, salt, sugar, garlic, onion powder, or other seasonings.
  5. Start with a small amount. Introduce it gradually and watch for digestive upset or other unusual reactions.

Plain mashed sweet potato can be offered by itself, mixed in a small amount with regular food, or spread on a lick mat or enrichment toy. These are serving options, not requirements.

How much sweet potato can a dog eat?

PetMD’s general guidance suggests the following portions, with a frequency of 2–3 times per week. These are broad recommendations, not personalized prescriptions; a veterinarian can tailor portions to a dog’s age, health, activity, and dietary needs.

Dog’s weight General serving
2–10 pounds (extra-small) 1 tablespoon
11–20 pounds (small) 1–2 tablespoons
21–50 pounds (medium) 2–3 tablespoons
51–90 pounds (large) 3 tablespoons
91 pounds or more (extra-large) 4 tablespoons

PetMD’s 2025 guidance says all treats, including sweet potato, should account for no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calories. The rest should come from complete and balanced dog food. A weight-based serving suggestion does not override that limit or your veterinarian’s advice.

Can dogs eat raw sweet potatoes?

Do not serve sweet potato raw. It is firm and harder for dogs to chew and digest; large pieces may also pose choking or intestinal blockage risks. Cook it until soft before offering any.

Can dogs eat sweet potato skins?

Peel the sweet potato before serving. The skin is not identified as toxic in the cited guidance, but it can be harder to digest. Removing it and serving soft, small pieces makes the food easier to chew.

Can dogs eat sweet potato fries?

Ordinary restaurant or packaged sweet potato fries are a poor choice for dogs. They are commonly cooked in oil and may be salted or seasoned. PetMD notes that oil can upset a dog’s stomach or trigger pancreatitis, while garlic powder and onion powder may be harmful. Choose plain sweet potato cooked without added ingredients instead.

Can dogs eat sweet potatoes every day?

Sweet potato is best treated as an occasional treat or small addition, not a daily staple. PetMD’s general suggestion is 2–3 times weekly, and treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. Keep your dog’s main diet complete and balanced.

What are the risks, and which dogs need extra care?

Too much can upset the stomach

Excess sweet potato may cause gas, bloating, vomiting, or diarrhea. Allergic reactions are described as uncommon, but possible signs include itching, recurring ear infections, or digestive upset. Stop offering it and contact your veterinarian if you notice a concerning reaction.

Ask a veterinarian about health conditions or special diets

For a dog with diabetes, PetMD says to feed sweet potato only if the veterinarian recommends it as part of an appropriate diet. The AKC also advises caution for diabetic, overweight, or less active dogs and recommends consulting a veterinarian before making dietary changes. Sweet potato is food, not a treatment for disease.

As registered dietitian nutritionist Kathleen Standafer Lopez puts it in the AKC article: “As with human nutrition, canine nutrition should be individualized.” Her comment is a reminder that general serving guidance may not fit every dog.

Does sweet potato offer nutritional benefits?

Sweet potato contains fiber, beta-carotene—which dogs convert to vitamin A—and other vitamins and minerals, according to PetMD; the AKC also discusses its fiber and nutrients. That describes its food composition, not a promise of a health benefit for an individual dog.
