Seven young numbats were reported at two conservation sites in New South Wales in October 2025—an encouraging sign of breeding at those locations, but not proof that the species has recovered across Australia.
What animal was spotted?
The animal is the numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus), a termite-eating Australian marsupial. The October 11, 2025 report by Indian Defence Review described young numbats seen at Mallee Cliffs National Park and Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary. The sightings were reported by staff associated with the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC).
Where were the young numbats seen?
The report counted seven young animals across the two sites:
- Mallee Cliffs National Park: Four juveniles were reported, including a set of quadruplets.
- Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary: Two other young numbats were reported.
The site-specific counts in the report add up to six, while its stated total is seven. The article does not explain that discrepancy, so the two figures should not be treated as a reconciled count or independent census.

The report also attributed a behavioral observation to AWC Regional Ecologist Brad Leue: juveniles ventured from their den around 8 a.m. and played within 50 metres of it while their mother hunted termites. That is an account of these animals, not evidence that numbats generally follow the same daily schedule.
What does the sighting tell us about numbat recovery?
AWC Wildlife Ecologist Dr. Rachel Ladd interpreted the reported young as evidence that the population was breeding under favorable environmental conditions and becoming more established. She also said: “Babies are always a really special find, particularly for a species as difficult to spot in the wild as the numbat.”

That makes the observations encouraging evidence of breeding at the reported sites. It does not establish how many numbats live there, whether numbers are rising over time, or whether the species has returned across its former range. The article’s “comeback” and “miracle” language is its framing, not a formal population assessment.
The report says numbats once ranged through arid and semi-arid Australia and had disappeared from much of that range by the 1970s, with survivors in isolated parts of southwest Western Australia. That historical account is reported by Indian Defence Review; the material available here does not independently verify it or provide a current range-wide population estimate. Nor does it establish a formal conservation-status change. The phrase “critically endangered” in the report’s headline should therefore not be read here as a verified current status determination.

How can predator-secure sanctuaries support conservation?
AWC says its reintroduction work returns animals to places where they have been lost and uses fenced sanctuaries to protect wildlife from introduced predators such as cats and foxes. Its general approach includes surveying source populations, checking animal health and genetics, planning sex ratios, selecting release sites, and monitoring animals after release.
AWC’s program page reports 50 reintroduced populations of 20 threatened species across 10 locations. Those are organization-wide figures, not numbat-specific results, and the page does not document the particular numbat releases described in the news report. AWC quotes Dr. John Kanowski saying, “For a host of Australian mammal species, translocations now offer the only reliable prospect of staving off extinction.” That is context about the organization’s broader program, not a finding about these sightings.
