Why Some Tsavo Male Lions Have Smaller Manes

Tsavo’s male lions are not all maneless. Research found later, slower mane development in the region and linked the pattern with its consistently hot climate.

Some male lions in Kenya’s Greater Tsavo Ecosystem (GTE) develop manes later and more slowly than lions in other populations. A 2006 study linked this pattern with Tsavo’s consistently hot climate, but the evidence supports heat as part of the explanation—not a proven single cause. And Tsavo males are not all maneless: most full-grown lions in the study had some mane.

Are Tsavo’s male lions actually maneless?

No. The description that Tsavo’s males are maneless is an overstatement. In a 2006 study, 87% of full-grown Greater Tsavo Ecosystem lions had manes, and 49% had what the authors classified as good manes. The study’s abstract states: “Contrary to popular belief, most full-grown GTE lions are not maneless; 87% had manes, with 49% possessing good manes.” (Gnoske, Celesia and Kerbis Peterhans, Journal of Zoology, 2006.)

The difference is better understood as variation in mane development and appearance across populations—not an absolute distinction between maned and maneless lions.

How does mane development differ in Tsavo?

The 2006 study compared GTE lions with lions from equatorial middle-elevation plains (EMEP). It found that mane development began earlier in the EMEP group and reached a full mane by ages 4–5. In the GTE group, development began later and progressed more slowly; relative to age, their manes were poorer on average.

This comparison concerns a population pattern. It does not mean every Tsavo lion follows the same timetable, or that every lion in the comparison groups has the same kind of mane.

What role might Tsavo’s heat play?

The study’s authors reported that delayed, slower mane development in GTE lions correlated with Tsavo’s consistently hot climate. That makes temperature a supported climatic explanation for the regional pattern, but the finding does not establish that heat alone determines an individual lion’s mane.

Mane traits also vary in ways that matter for reproduction and ecology. A 2002 study reported that mane darkness indicates nutrition and testosterone and affects female choice and competition between males. It also found shorter or lighter manes in hotter seasons, years, and habitats. Those findings suggest temperature is one influence among several, rather than a complete explanation for every difference in mane size or color. (West and Packer, Science, 2002.)

Does a smaller mane mean a male lion is immature?

No. Mane appearance is not a reliable stand-alone indicator of sexual maturity. The 2006 study documented poorly maned males that were fully mature and mated actively. A sparse or less-developed mane, by itself, does not show that a lion is immature, has low testosterone, or cannot reproduce.

Do manes make male lions dangerously hot?

It is too simple to say that a mane necessarily causes dangerous overheating. A 2017 study continuously monitored core body temperature in free-living lions for approximately one year and found no difference between male and female 24-hour maximum core temperatures in its sample. That result does not show that manes have no thermal effects; it cautions against assuming that male lions with manes must overheat dangerously. (“Getting to the core,” Proceedings of the Royal Society B, 2017.)

What a lion’s mane can—and cannot—tell you

  • Population and climate: Mane development varies across populations, and the Tsavo study linked later, slower development with a consistently hot climate.
  • Age: Mane development changes over time, and the age pattern observed in EMEP lions differed from that observed in GTE lions.
  • Color and condition: Research links mane darkness with nutrition and testosterone, as well as female choice and male competition.
  • Maturity or reproductive ability: Mane appearance alone cannot establish either; poorly maned, mature males in the 2006 study mated actively.
