No. A black cat is not bad luck. Crossing your path, sneezing near you, or turning up at your door does not predict misfortune. The belief is folklore, and the traditions surrounding black cats differ widely from one country to the next. Some treat black cats as ominous, while others see them as lucky, protective, or a sign of prosperity.
The Natural History Museum answers the question bluntly: “Absolutely not!” The museum’s editorial text is unsigned, so the answer is best attributed to the museum itself. The more useful question is why the superstition exists and why it does not travel the same way everywhere.
When did the fear of black cats start?
The Natural History Museum places the most prominent European black-cat fear in the 1200s, when rumors held that the devil could take the form of a black cat. The museum also attributes an inquisition and a mass killing of cats to Pope Gregory IX. Treat this as the museum’s historical framing, not as the single origin of every cat superstition. The museum’s account is available here.
Some popular accounts add plague as the reason cats were killed. The evidence for that causal link is not firm enough to state as fact, so this article does not rely on it.

Is the belief the same elsewhere?
No. A reference answer from the National Diet Library of Japan frames the same question readers ask: is the belief that a black cat crossing your path is unlucky found in other countries? The answer depends on where you look. The traditions below come from different places and different kinds of source, so they should not be merged into one rule.
United Kingdom
Cats Protection reports that meeting a black cat, especially one crossing your path, is considered good luck in the UK. It notes that belief in Yorkshire can differ. The same charity summary also lists a Scottish doorstep omen of prosperity and the belief that giving a bride a black cat brings luck. These are reported folklore, not a national consensus. The source is Cats Protection’s black cat superstitions page.

Italy
Cats Protection reports a belief that hearing a black cat sneeze brings good luck. The National Library of Medicine’s historical article, The Truth About Black Cats, separately recounts a reported 16th-century Italian sickbed omen. The two examples are different signs from different periods, and neither establishes a general Italian rule about black cats.
Ships and sailors
The National Library of Medicine recounts English folklore in which a black cat that came aboard and stayed was lucky, while one that came aboard and left foretold a sinking. Cats Protection describes a broader European belief that shipboard cats bring safe passage. These are reported beliefs about how sailors interpreted animals. They are not records of actual maritime safety practices.

Persia
Encyclopaedia Iranica records that in some popular beliefs, black cats are possible manifestations of jinn or the devil. In Khorasan, however, black cats may be considered helpful Muslim jinn. The same entry records a folk legend that Imam Ali blessed a cat’s back, which it links to the saying that cats always land on their feet. These are folk records, not zoological facts. The entry is Encyclopaedia Iranica’s entry on cats in mythology and folklore.
Even within Persian folklore, the picture is mixed. A regional label can cover more than one tradition, so the Khorasan belief should not be read as the view of all of Persia.

Japan
The maneki-neko, or beckoning cat, is a physical figure. The SFO Museum states that its black color symbolizes safety and helps drive away evil. The museum’s exhibition page is Maneki Neko: Japan’s Beckoning Cat. The National Library of Medicine article also summarizes Japanese traditions linking black cats to prosperity, though it does not give the details needed to describe them further here. For the figurine itself, the museum is the stronger source.

Some rows are described in only one source, and several cells say “not stated” because the source does not specify the encounter or the outcome. That gap is part of the answer: the folklore is inconsistent in detail, not just in its verdict.

What this list can and cannot claim
The title promises 25 superstitions. The sources used here document a selection of traditions, not a verified complete set of 25, so this article does not pretend otherwise. Each entry is limited to what its source states.
The source types also differ. The Natural History Museum and SFO Museum are institutional accounts. The National Library of Medicine and Cats Protection are a historical article and a charity summary. The National Diet Library of Japan’s reference answer, available at its reference entry, relies on the books it cites, so it is useful for locating leads but not as standalone proof of a national belief.
How to check a black cat superstition yourself
- Identify the place. Check whether a claim refers to a country, a county, a region, or a single family’s habit. “Britain” and “Yorkshire” are not interchangeable.
- Identify the period. A 13th-century European rumor, a 16th-century Italian omen, and a modern charity summary are different kinds of evidence.
- Separate belief from practice. A story that sailors told about a cat is not a record of what sailors did to keep ships safe.
- Check the encounter. Most superstitions name a specific event, such as a crossing, a sneeze, or a boarding. A claim that a black cat is unlucky in general goes beyond what these sources describe.
- Check the source type. Museum and reference-library summaries are good starting points. Verify any claim that matters to you against the original source before repeating it.
Folklore tells you what people believed and how they explained the world. It does not tell you how a black cat will behave, what it needs, or whether it will bring good or bad fortune to the household it lives in.
