Most kittens begin eating solid food at about three and a half to four weeks of age and finish weaning somewhere between eight and ten weeks. Those figures describe a normal range, not a deadline. A kitten that starts a little early or late is not automatically off track. What matters most is whether it is eating enough, gaining weight, and moving steadily toward adult-style meals.
When kittens start solid food and how long weaning takes
Weaning is a gradual handover from milk to food, not a single switch on a particular day. Veterinary and humane-society guidance gives slightly different ages, and the table below shows how they line up.

Taken together, a practical working range is three to four weeks to start and eight to ten weeks to finish. A kitten raised by its mother usually follows the later end of the starting range; an orphaned kitten may begin around three weeks, provided it is developmentally ready to lap and eat.
Weaning with the mother present
When the mother cat is available, she should keep caring for the litter for as long as possible. Kittens learn feeding and social behavior by watching her, and the ASPCA warns that removing kittens abruptly can harm both their health and their socialization. Weaning in this setting is a matter of gradually giving the kittens more independence from her.

- Around four weeks, place the kittens in a separate area for a few hours at a time. Provide a litter box, kitten food, and fresh water in that space.
- Keep the mother nearby so the kittens can return to her for comfort and nursing.
- Increase time apart gradually as the kittens become more independent and begin eating reliably on their own.
Hand-feeding an orphaned or hand-raised kitten
Orphaned kittens and those raised by hand need the same overall sequence, but the steps are guided by the caregiver. Follow this order and move to the next step only when the kitten is comfortable with the current one.
- Offer kitten milk replacer in a shallow dish first. Use a low-sided saucer rather than a deep bowl. Do not use cow’s milk.
- Let the kitten lick the liquid. Never push its nose into the dish. The ASPCA warns that a kitten forced this way may inhale liquid and develop pneumonia or other lung problems.
- Make gruel once the kitten laps. Mix kitten food with kitten milk replacer until the mixture is soft.
- Keep bottle feeding while the kitten learns. Offer the dish first, then the bottle if it has not eaten enough.
- Reduce the liquid gradually as solid intake rises. The ASPCA says hand-fed kittens should rely solely on kitten food for nutrients by five to six weeks. VCA’s raising-kittens guidance describes reducing added moisture until the food has little or none, usually by four to six weeks.
These timelines are general. A kitten that is weak, ill, or slow to eat needs a veterinarian’s assessment before the schedule is pushed forward.

Choosing food and feeding supplies
Kitten food formulated for growth
The core of weaning is a complete kitten food. VCA recommends checking the label for a nutritional adequacy statement that says the food is complete and balanced for growth or for all life stages, as described in its guidance on how to choose the right kitten food. Adult cat food is not a substitute during weaning.
Wet or dry kitten food
VCA says wet or dry kitten food is appropriate from about six to eight weeks. Both formats can be used as kittens progress, and the sources do not establish one format as universally better. The choice usually comes down to what the individual kitten eats readily.

Kitten milk replacer and feeding dishes
Kitten milk replacer is essential only for orphaned or hand-fed kittens and for making early gruel. A shallow saucer or low-sided dish is a practical accessory, not a specialized requirement.
Mistakes that slow weaning or cause harm
- Separating kittens abruptly from the mother. The ASPCA links abrupt removal to health and socialization problems.
- Using cow’s milk as the weaning liquid. The ASPCA says it may cause stomach upset and diarrhea in some kittens.
- Forcing the nose into a bowl. Liquid can be inhaled, leading to pneumonia or other lung problems.
- Switching to adult food. Kitten growth needs a kitten formula.
- Changing food alone to fix poor growth. Weight problems can signal a medical issue that needs professional care.
After messy early meals, keep the kitten warm and dry, and wipe formula from its face and feet with a soft, damp cloth.

Signs that call for a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian promptly if a kitten:
- is not gaining weight as expected
- refuses food, or eats so little that its intake clearly lags behind its growth
- seems lethargic, weak, or unwell
- has diarrhea or vomiting after meals
VCA Animal Hospitals puts it plainly in its raising kittens guidance: “Failure to gain weight may indicate a problem and the need for veterinary care.” Weight loss or stalled growth should prompt a visit rather than a change of food alone.
