What to Do if Your Cat Is Hit by a Car: A Step-by-Step Guide

If your cat has been hit by a car, call an emergency veterinary hospital and get it assessed promptly, even if it looks normal. Here is how to move it safely and which signs mean immediate care.

A cat that has been hit by a car needs a veterinary assessment the same day, even if it seems unhurt or is walking around. Call an emergency veterinary hospital while you are still with the cat, describe what happened, and follow its instructions for transport. Internal injuries from a vehicle strike are often not visible from the outside, so a calm, normal-looking cat still needs to be examined.

Call the emergency hospital before you move the cat

Once you have checked that the scene is safe, phone the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. Tell the staff that the cat was struck by a vehicle, describe any visible signs (bleeding, limping, breathing changes, or inability to stand), and say when you expect to arrive. The clinic can give situation-specific first-aid and transport advice, and that advice should override general guidance if the two differ.

Step-by-step: what to do at the scene

  1. Protect yourself and the cat from traffic. Pull over or stop well clear of moving vehicles before you approach. An injured or frightened cat may scratch or bite, even if it is normally gentle, so approach slowly and speak calmly.
  2. Call the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. Give the details above and ask for first-aid instructions you can follow on the way.
  3. Keep the cat quiet, warm, and as still as possible. Limit handling. If the cat may have a broken limb, a spinal injury, or neurological signs such as wobbling or dragging legs, touch it as little as possible. Do not stop to inspect or clean every wound; the trip to the clinic comes first.
  4. Lift the cat into a carrier or sturdy box. Use the method in the table below. Support the body as a whole rather than lifting by one leg or the scruff.
  5. Drive to the veterinary hospital promptly. Vehicle-injury guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals states that a cat should be assessed for internal injuries even when it appears normal.

Signs that mean the cat needs emergency care now

Treat any of the following as an immediate emergency: trouble breathing, collapse or reduced responsiveness, pale gums, rapid or noisy breathing, cool legs or ears, severe weakness, inability to stand, heavy bleeding, or a deep wound. This list is not complete. After a vehicle strike, do not wait for a sign to appear before going to the hospital.

VCA lists rapid or noisy breathing, a weak pulse, pale mucous membranes, listlessness, and cool extremities among the signs of shock. Shock can develop after an injury, so these signs matter even when the cat was not visibly bleeding at the scene.

Chest injuries that look like breathing trouble

Blunt trauma from a car can cause a traumatic pneumothorax, in which air collects in the chest cavity around the lungs. VCA describes rapid or difficult breathing and abdominal breathing (the belly moving heavily with each breath) as signs of this condition. Any breathing difficulty after a collision warrants immediate veterinary care, and you should say so clearly when you call ahead.

Handling and first-aid limits

A towel or blanket can help protect your hands and calm the cat, but do not wrap it so tightly that breathing is restricted. Do not try to straighten, splint, or otherwise manipulate a suspected fracture or spinal injury. If the cat is conscious, keep your hands away from its mouth. For any wound covering or other first aid, follow the emergency veterinarian’s direction rather than improvising.

Medication and vomiting

Do not give painkillers or any other medication unless a veterinarian tells you to. Drugs that are safe for people can be dangerous to cats, and a dose given at the roadside can complicate treatment. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s guidance is direct: “Do not try to induce vomiting or give any medication to your pet unless directed to do so by a veterinarian or poison control center.”

Choosing a carrier or box for transport

A carrier or sturdy box keeps the cat contained and reduces the chance of further injury during the drive. The right choice depends on whether a spinal injury is possible.

Option When it fits Limitation
Carrier with a removable top Most cases. Remove the top, lower the cat in, and replace the top, so the cat is not pushed through a small door. Only useful if the top actually separates from the base. Check this before you need it.
Carrier with a fixed top Use only if no other container is available. The cat must be pushed through a small door, which VCA’s guidance advises against for an injured cat.
Large sturdy box Recommended by VCA when a spinal injury is suspected, because it lets the cat lie flat without being bent or pushed. Needs enough room for the cat to lie down and enough sides to keep it from sliding.

If the cat is difficult to move or is breathing poorly, follow the emergency clinic’s advice on the phone rather than forcing it into a container.

Why a cat that seems fine still needs a check

Cats are good at hiding pain and can appear calm while carrying internal or chest injuries. Many cats walk away from a collision and then deteriorate over the next hours. A veterinary exam can detect problems that a quick look at the outside cannot, such as chest injury, bleeding inside the body, or fractures that are not yet obvious. Going in promptly costs little compared with waiting to see whether the cat gets worse.

Wounds you can address on the way

VCA Animal Hospitals’ urgent-care guidance on lacerations and abrasions covers wound care, but the priority after a car strike is transport. If a wound is bleeding heavily, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth while you drive and tell the clinic about it. Do not stop to clean dirt or debris from minor scrapes; the clinic can do that safely under supervision.

The first-aid guidance from the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Pet First Aid brochure puts the role of home care clearly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”
