The 9 Best Cat Foods for Overweight Cats (2026 Guide)

The best cat food for an overweight cat starts with a veterinarian-set calorie target. Here is how to use the nine Cats.com picks, compare wet and dry, and set a safe rate of loss.

No single cat food is the best choice for every overweight cat. The step that matters most is a daily calorie target that your veterinarian sets for your cat’s ideal weight. Once that number exists, you can judge which food fits it. The nine foods in the Cats.com roundup, written by Mallory Crusta and medically reviewed by JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM, and updated February 24, 2026, are reasonable candidates to bring to that conversation. They span fresh frozen delivery, wet food, dry food, raw or freeze-dried patties, and portioned pâté.

The roundup cites an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) page stating that 61% of the nation’s cats are overweight or obese. The survey behind that figure was not confirmed for this article, so read it as AAHA’s reported number rather than a fresh count.

Set the calorie target before you choose a food

A food label or a product roundup cannot tell you how many calories your cat should eat. AAHA’s guidance on weight reduction describes an individualized nutrition assessment, with calorie and portion planning based on ideal weight and adjusted to the individual cat. Work through these steps with your veterinarian in this order.

  1. Get an ideal weight. Ask your vet for the target weight your cat should reach. Every calorie figure below depends on this number, not on the current weight.
  2. Get a daily calorie budget. Your vet converts the ideal weight and the cat’s condition into a daily number of calories. Write it on the food container or in your phone so every household member uses the same figure.
  3. Agree on a rate of loss. AAHA states that obese cats should lose about 0.5% to 2% of body weight per week, with regular weigh-ins and plan adjustments. The Cats.com roundup gives 1% to 2%. Starting near the top of that range is faster, and the lower end of the AAHA range is slower. Your vet picks the pace.
  4. Weigh every portion. Use a kitchen scale in grams or ounces. Scoops and “about one can” estimates drift upward over weeks, and the drift is often where weight loss stalls.
  5. Weigh the cat on a schedule. Weigh weekly at the same time of day, on the same scale, and record the result. If weight stops falling, the plan gets adjusted, not abandoned.

A worked example for a 4.5 kg ideal weight

AAHA’s 2021 weight-reduction guidance reproduces a study figure: cats in a 12-week weight-loss study had a mean intake of 52 ± 4.9 kcal per kg0.711 per day. This is a study average, not a prescription, and it is shown here only to illustrate the arithmetic. For a cat whose ideal weight is 4.5 kg, 4.50.711 is about 2.91, so the study average works out to about 151 kcal per day, with a range of about 137 to 166 kcal per day when the ± 4.9 spread is applied. Your vet may set a different number.

At that budget, a 4.5 kg cat losing 0.5% to 2% per week would lose roughly 23 g to 90 g each week. Those numbers are the arithmetic from AAHA’s range, not a forecast for any particular cat.

The food’s calorie density then determines how much food fills the budget. Using the per-ounce values from the Cats.com table:

Does my cat need a therapeutic diet?

This is the question with the most clinical weight, and the answer depends on how much the calories must drop. AAHA recommends therapeutic weight-loss diets when significant calorie restriction is needed, because these diets are fortified to maintain nutrient adequacy. Simply cutting back a maintenance diet by a large amount can create nutritional deficiencies. If your vet’s plan involves a substantial reduction, a therapeutic diet is the guideline-based option.

If the reduction is smaller, your vet may judge that a complete and balanced food for your cat’s life stage is adequate. Confirm the complete-and-balanced statement on the label you buy, and let your vet make that call.

AAHA also notes two qualified considerations. High-protein diets may help spare lean muscle during restriction, and high-moisture diets may increase satiety. These are considerations, not a requirement that every cat eat the same macronutrient profile. The Cats.com roundup also includes a commercial nutritionist’s view. Emma Passman, identified in the article as a UK-based commercial pet nutritionist, said: “Choose a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that helps maintain lean muscle mass while promoting satiety, reducing the likelihood of overeating.” Treat that as one professional’s commercial advice, not as a veterinary guideline.

The nine picks at a glance

The table lists the calories per ounce as shown in the Cats.com comparison. The article warns that automatically calculated nutrient-chart values may not represent typical values, so verify each label before relying on a figure. The picks are not ranked here; the roundup’s order is not reproduced.

Product Form (as grouped in the Cats.com roundup) Calories per oz (Cats.com table) Notes
Smalls Ground Bird Fresh Cat Food Fresh frozen, delivered 40 Offered with customizable meal plans. Plan terms and offers change, so confirm them before subscribing.
BFF OMG Tuna & Salmon Sweet Cheeks Dinner in Gravy Wet Cat Food Pouches Wet, pouch 15 Lowest figure in the table, so a set calorie budget means a larger volume.
Wellness CORE Grain-Free Indoor Chicken & Chicken Liver Recipe Not stated in the roundup’s grouping; check the label 32 Product name indicates an indoor-cat formulation.
Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein Chicken Formula Grain-Free Dry Cat Food Dry 113 Calorie-dense, so a small weight carries a full meal’s worth of calories.
Open Farm Grass-Fed Beef Rustic Blend Wet Food Wet 27 Mid-range wet option in the table.
Farmina N&D Prime Boar & Apple Recipe Adult Cat Dry Food Dry 53 Adult cat formula per product name.
Vital Essentials Rabbit Mini Patties Raw or freeze-dried patty 116 Highest figure in the table, so portions are small by weight.
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Love Me Tender Cat Food Wet 21 Low calories per ounce among the wet options.
Nutro Perfect Portions Grain-Free Real Chicken Pâté Wet pâté in portioned servings 43 Pre-portioned servings can simplify measuring, but confirm the calories in one serving on the label.

Picks by format

Fresh frozen delivery: Smalls Ground Bird

  • Delivered fresh frozen, with customizable meal plans according to the Cats.com roundup.
  • At 40 kcal per oz in the table, a 151 kcal budget equals about 3.8 oz per day.
  • Check thawing instructions, storage space, and whether the plan lets you set exact portions for a calorie target.

Wet foods: BFF OMG, Open Farm Beef Rustic Blend, Weruva Love Me Tender, and Nutro Perfect Portions

  • These options range from 15 to 43 kcal per oz in the table, the lowest-density group among the nine.
  • Low density helps satiety, but it also means larger volumes to measure and more total weight to track.
  • Nutro Perfect Portions is sold in pre-portioned servings, which can make measuring easier than spooning from a can.

Dry foods: Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein, Farmina N&D Prime Boar & Apple, and Wellness CORE Indoor

  • Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein (113 kcal per oz) and Farmina N&D Prime (53 kcal per oz) are dry foods per their product descriptions in the roundup.
  • Because each kibble carries many calories, a few grams of error can outweigh a full day’s allowance. Weigh dry food rather than scooping it.
  • The Wellness CORE Indoor formula is listed at 32 kcal per oz; its physical form is not stated in the roundup’s grouping, so check the label.

Raw or freeze-dried patties: Vital Essentials Rabbit Mini Patties

  • The table lists 116 kcal per oz, the highest density among the nine. A small weight covers a large share of the daily budget.
  • Patty-style foods are often used as a topper or part of a mixed plan. Confirm with your vet whether it can be the main diet.

Wet or dry: which helps weight loss more?

Neither format decides weight loss on its own. Calorie intake does, and the format affects how easily you can hit the budget. The table compares the factors that matter most.

The table shows that wet foods carry fewer calories per ounce in this list, so the same budget takes more food by weight. Dry foods pack more calories into less weight, which makes accurate weighing more important.

How to get an indoor cat to lose weight

Indoor cats have less opportunity to burn calories than outdoor cats, so the plan usually depends on food control and daily activity more than on the food brand alone.

  • Stop free-feeding. Put out a measured daily amount in set meals rather than leaving a bowl full all day.
  • Divide the daily budget. Splitting the calories across several small meals can help the cat feel satisfied between them. Confirm the schedule with your vet.
  • Schedule play. Short, regular play sessions before meals add activity without changing the calorie plan.
  • Log everything. Record each meal, treat, and weigh-in. Households often miss treats and table scraps, which can erase the calorie deficit.
  • Never cut food abruptly or let the cat skip meals. A cat that eats little for a few days can develop hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition. Call your vet promptly if your cat stops eating or eats much less than usual.

Before you buy

  • Confirm the calories per serving on the label you are buying. Use the label, not the roundup, for your calculation.
  • Check for a complete-and-balanced statement for your cat’s life stage.
  • Check the current listing, formula, and package size. Recipes and retailer stock change.
  • Check subscription or meal-plan terms before signing up for a delivery service.
  • Tell your vet about any disease that affects diet selection, since some conditions require specific nutrition.
