To make an Amazon Wish List, open the Me tab, choose Lists, tap the plus sign, name the list, and create it. Before you send it to anyone, check the list name, shipping address, and surprise settings. Once the list is shared, invitees can reach it through a link, an email, or a text, and the list shows only the name, city, and state of the address on it. This guide covers each step, what to check before sharing, and when an event registry fits better than an ordinary list.
Create a Wish List
Amazon’s US Help page “Create Your List” describes the core route. Labels move between app versions and marketplaces, so if a menu name differs on your screen, look for the same function in a nearby menu.

- In the Amazon app, tap the Me tab.
- Choose Lists.
- Tap the plus sign.
- Enter a name for the list, such as “Pet supplies for Mia’s birthday” or “Things I want for the cat.”
- Select Create List.
On a desktop browser, the same feature is reached through Account & Lists. Amazon also offers an Add to List button on eligible product pages, which creates a list the first time you use it. If you see a three-dot menu on a list, that menu opens Manage List, where address and preference settings live.
Add and organize items
You can add a product in two ways: tap Add to List on a product page, or tap the heart icon. Items go to your default list. When you have more than one list, pick the destination where the option is offered.

Some items cannot be added at all. Amazon’s Help page documents these exclusions:
- Out-of-print books
- Out-of-stock products
- Phones that require a service plan
- Items without a release date
- Items with quantity restrictions
- Pharmacy items
When a product is sold by a third party, the listing may show See Buying Options in place of Add to Cart, because seller availability can change. Pet owners who keep a running list of food, litter, or medication should check that the item is still available before a gift event, since a saved item is not a reserved one.

Check settings before you share
Lists stay private until you share them. Before sending a link, review four settings:
- List name. Anyone with the link sees it, so avoid names that reveal personal details you would not share.
- Shipping address. This is set in list settings, and it is separate from your account address (see the address section below).
- Purchased items. Decide whether items already bought stay visible to people who view the list.
- Surprise preferences. Amazon offers a “spoil my surprises” option for owners who want to see what has been bought, and the setting is worth reviewing if the list is for a birthday or holiday.
Share your list and control access
Amazon’s US consumer guide, updated July 12, 2025, describes sharing through an Invite control, a copied link, email, or text. Recipients open the link to view the list.

Amazon’s UK guide also documents a choice between view-only and view-and-edit invite permissions. This is confirmed for the UK site. If you use the US site, check your current list controls before telling someone they can edit your list, because the permission options may not match.
What others can see: address privacy
Amazon’s Help page states: “Your list shows only the name, city, and state of your address.” That sentence describes what a viewer sees on the list page. It does not describe every step of fulfillment. If a friend buys something for you, the seller and carrier still need a full delivery address to ship the order, and Amazon’s documentation does not spell out every disclosure in that process.

Two related points come from Amazon’s US address Help page:
- Changing your account address does not update the shipping address on an existing Wish List.
- The list’s shipping address is managed in list settings, so update it there when your delivery address changes.
For a list shared publicly, a practical rule is to avoid putting anything in the list name or description that points to your home. Amazon’s guidance does not establish a universal safety standard, so the choice of what to share remains yours.

Deal notifications
Amazon says app users can opt into push notifications for a price drop, a coupon, or a deal on items in a list. The notification is optional, and Amazon describes it as an alert for listed items, not as a full price-tracking service. Do not expect a complete price history or an alert for every item on the list.
On Amazon UK, the route is the profile tab, then App Settings, then Notifications, then Deals and recommendations. The US app labels may be different, so compare against your current app.
Wish List or event registry?
An ordinary Wish List suits a standing collection of things you want. An event registry or gift list suits a defined occasion such as a wedding, a baby’s arrival, a birthday, or a graduation. The table below compares the two based on Amazon’s guidance.

To find a registry on Amazon, use the registry search on the Amazon US site, which is described in Amazon’s “How to find a registry on Amazon” guide. Registries that are not public can only be opened through the link the owner shares.

- The item will not add. Check the exclusion list above. If the product is out of stock or the seller is third-party, look for See Buying Options.
- The address on the list is old. Edit the shipping address in list settings. Changing your account address does not update the list.
- Your menu labels are different. Amazon changes labels between app versions and marketplaces. Use the function name (Lists, Manage List, Notifications) to find the setting.
- A viewer can edit when you did not intend it. Check your invite permission settings. Permission options documented for the UK may not match the US site.
Use the steps above to build the list, check the four settings, and then share it. If you are building a registry for a specific event, choose the registry option from the start rather than converting a standard list later.
