Traveling Safely With Your Pet: A 2026 Guide for Car, Air, and International Trips

A safe pet trip depends on a veterinary fitness check, secure containment, early paperwork checks for every jurisdiction and carrier, and a plan for illness and heat.

A safe trip with a pet comes down to four decisions made before you leave: confirm the animal is fit to travel, secure it so it cannot escape or be hurt in transit, check the paperwork for every place you will pass through, and plan for illness, heat, and emergencies along the way. Requirements differ by animal, route, and transport provider, so the steps below show how to check each one rather than assuming a single rule applies everywhere.

Start with a veterinary fitness check and a paperwork timeline

Book a veterinary visit before you commit to any itinerary. The vet can judge whether the animal is fit for the planned length of trip, the climate, and the mode of transport, and can update vaccinations and parasite prevention to match where you are going.

  1. Confirm identification. Make sure the pet is microchipped and that the registered contact details are current, including a phone number that will work while you are away.
  2. Review vaccinations and travel fitness with the veterinarian. Ask specifically about flea, tick, and other parasite prevention for your route.
  3. List every jurisdiction and transport provider on the trip. That includes destinations, connecting points, and the return journey. Requirements can apply at a transit stop even when you do not leave the airport or station.
  4. Check each provider’s current policy in writing. Airlines, rail operators, ferries, and pet-friendly lodging can each set their own conditions.
  5. Start the paperwork early. International requirements can include tests, vaccinations, microchips, permits, or health certificates, and some of these take time to arrange.

For air travel, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s air-travel preparation guidance (page modified January 25, 2026) describes a health and acclimation certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel. That is the requirement stated for the air-travel context on that page. It is not a universal rule for every flight, route, or destination, so check the airline and destination rules for your specific trip.

Before any long trip, practice with the carrier or restraint you plan to use. Start with short drives, then increase the duration over several weeks so the animal learns that the carrier or harness is a normal part of travel. A pet that has never been restrained in a car will rarely accept it calmly on the day you leave.

Car travel: containment, feeding, and stops

Most pet travel problems on the road are containment problems. An unrestrained pet can distract the driver, be thrown in a sudden stop, or escape at a rest area. The CDC’s Pet Travel Safety guidance (reviewed April 15, 2026) gives a clear baseline.

Restraint options

A pet riding on a seat should ride in the back seat in a harness attached to the seat buckle. Use a harness designed for vehicle restraint rather than a walking harness clipped to a collar, since a collar can injure the neck in a sudden stop. Check that the harness fits the animal’s chest and that the buckle attachment is secure before each trip.

A pet in a crate should have room to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around. The crate should be ventilated and secured so it cannot slide or tip. Wedging it with luggage is not a secure method. Keep the crate in the back of the vehicle, not in a position where the animal could be hit by shifting cargo.

Feeding, breaks, and car sickness

  • Feed 3 to 4 hours before departure. The CDC advises this to help prevent car sickness or vomiting. Offer water up to departure.
  • Plan frequent stops for dogs. Stop for exercise, toileting, and water at regular intervals. Choose stops with a leash, a shaded area, and room to walk away from traffic.
  • Keep the animal in sight during breaks. Clip it on a leash before opening any door, even in a secure parking area.

Never leave a pet alone in a parked vehicle

The CDC states: “Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle.” Its guidance warns that temperatures can become dangerous quickly in both hot and cold weather, and that a parked car is not a safe waiting room even for a short errand. Plan around this by bringing a second adult to stay with the pet, or by choosing places where you can take the animal with you.

What to pack in the car

  • Water and food, with a spare supply for delays
  • A bowl, leash, and waste bags
  • Medication, with enough for the full trip plus several extra days
  • Basic first-aid supplies
  • Vaccination records, identification, and veterinary contact information

Air travel: confirm the airline’s rules before you buy anything

Airline rules vary, and the details that matter most are the ones that change between carriers and routes: whether the animal can travel in the cabin or only as cargo, carrier dimensions, where the carrier must be stowed, seating limits, fees, health documentation, and weather restrictions. Confirm all of these with the airline directly before you buy a carrier or book a seat.

Questions to ask the airline before booking

  • Is my animal accepted in the cabin, in cargo, or both, on this exact flight?
  • What are the maximum carrier dimensions, and does the carrier need to fit under the seat in front of me?
  • Are there limits on the number of pets per flight or on particular breeds?
  • What health paperwork do you require, and when must it be issued?
  • What weather or seasonal restrictions apply to cargo and connecting flights?
  • Which approved kennel models do you accept?

In-cabin carriers

Keep the animal in its carrier beneath the seat in front of you, as the airline directs. The CDC says never to place a pet in an overhead bin. Buy a carrier only after you have checked the airline’s dimension limits, and choose one that is ventilated and allows the animal to stand and turn around.

Cargo travel

For cargo, confirm the kennel specification and the route requirements in writing. Weigh the animal’s health, temperament, and the weather on the route before choosing cargo. Consult a veterinarian about whether the individual animal is fit to fly at all, since travel conditions can add medical stress.

When an airline can refuse a pet

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Flying with a Pet” guidance (last updated September 26, 2025) notes that an airline may refuse a pet that it determines cannot safely travel on the aircraft. Ask the airline what evidence it uses for this decision, and keep your veterinarian’s written statement of fitness with your travel documents.

Protecting health and handling emergencies away from home

Illness and injury on a trip often come from contact with other animals, unfamiliar water, and parasites. Prevention is simpler than treatment when you are far from your regular vet.

Supervision, animals, and water

  • Supervise the pet at all times in unfamiliar places, using a leash or carrier.
  • Avoid contact with stray dogs, strays of any species, and wild animals.
  • Do not let the animal drink from or play in stagnant or discolored water.
  • Avoid water with suspicious foam, scum, algal mats, paint-like streaks, or dead animals nearby.

Ticks, insects, and disease risk

Check the pet for ticks after every outdoor outing, paying attention to the ears, neck, paws, and between the toes. Ask your veterinarian which flea, tick, and parasite preventives suit your destination. Travel can expose pets to disease risks, including rabies and diseases spread by insects and ticks, so ask about these specifically rather than assuming your home-region plan covers you.

Emergency contacts and a daily check

  • Keep the home veterinarian’s phone number and records with you.
  • Identify a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital near each overnight stop before you need it.
  • Save an animal poison control number in your phone.
  • Do a short daily check of appetite, water intake, stool, breathing, and behavior.

First aid can keep a pet stable until treatment is available, but it is not a substitute for veterinary care. Follow any first-aid treatment with a veterinary visit.

International trips and returning a dog to the United States

International travel is where preventable documentation problems are most common. Requirements depend on the animal, every country visited, transit points, and the mode of travel. Check official requirements for each jurisdiction and for each carrier, and do not assume a rule for one country, animal, or flight applies to another.

For dogs returning to the United States, CDC dog-entry rules can apply even during a layover. Requirements can depend on:

  • where the dog has been in the previous six months
  • where the dog was vaccinated
  • whether the dog enters the country during transit
  • how the dog is transported

A dog that does not meet U.S. entry requirements may be denied entry and returned at the owner’s expense. Plan the return journey with the same care as the outbound trip, and recheck the CDC’s current dog-layover guidance (April 29, 2026) before you book.

Choosing a mode of travel for your particular pet

No single mode of travel suits every animal. Compare the pet’s health and temperament, its age and breed, the trip length and route, the weather and handling conditions, and the rules of each transport provider and jurisdiction.

The CDC Yellow Book’s travel chapter (2026 edition, published April 23, 2025) flags three groups for whom travel conditions may contribute to medical complications:

  • older animals with chronic health conditions
  • very young animals
  • short-nosed breeds, such as bulldogs and Persian cats

If your pet falls into one of these groups, make the veterinary consultation more detailed and consider whether a shorter trip, a car rather than cargo, or a postponed journey is the safer option.

Common problems and what to do

  • The pet vomits in the car. Check whether it was fed within 3 to 4 hours of departure, stop in a safe place, and offer water in small amounts.
  • The airline will not accept the carrier. Ask for the exact dimension limit in writing and check the carrier before the flight. Do not attempt to force a carrier that is too large.
  • The pet refuses the carrier or harness. Return to short practice sessions at home. Do not travel with an animal that has never been restrained.
  • The animal is denied entry at a border or port. Contact the carrier and the relevant national authority immediately, and keep all health documents with you.

Packing and planning checklist

  • Veterinary fitness statement and vaccination records
  • Microchip number and current contact details on a tag and in the records
  • Airline or transport provider confirmation of pet policy
  • Carrier or harness fitted and practiced
  • Water, food, bowl, leash, waste bags, medication, and first-aid supplies
  • Emergency veterinary contacts and poison control number
  • Destination and transit requirements checked for the outbound and return journeys
