Catnip can make a cat vomit or have diarrhea, and it does not affect every cat the same way. The ASPCA notes that some cats become sedated while others become stimulated. No veterinary source reviewed for this article sets a catnip dose that marks the line between a normal amount and an overdose, so there is no safe number to give owners. If your cat has eaten a large or unknown amount of catnip, or shows any worrying sign, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Do not try to make your cat vomit at home.
What catnip is and why it affects cats
Catnip is the plant Nepeta cataria. The ASPCA identifies its active compound, nepetalactone, as the toxic principle and lists catnip as toxic to cats in its plant guidance. That classification is the ASPCA’s, and it describes the plant’s potential to cause harm. It does not mean every cat that sniffs or chews catnip becomes ill. Many cats show mild, short-lived reactions, and some show none at all.
Can a cat overdose on catnip?
The honest answer is that the available guidance does not define an overdose for catnip. The ASPCA and VCA Animal Hospitals describe the risks in general terms, and neither gives a dose or frequency that is considered safe for all cats. Several factors make a single threshold impossible to set:
- Body size and health. A small kitten, an older cat, or a cat with an existing illness may react differently from a healthy adult.
- Form of exposure. Fresh leaves, dried herb, powder, and catnip sprayed on a toy deliver different amounts of plant material.
- Individual response. Cats differ widely in how they react, so the same amount can calm one cat and agitate another.
What the sources do support is that catnip can cause gastrointestinal upset, and that a large or unknown intake is a reason to call for advice rather than to wait and see.

Signs to watch for after exposure
The ASPCA lists vomiting and diarrhea as possible effects. It also reports that catnip sedates some cats and stimulates others. Changes in behavior after catnip are common and often brief. The following are the signs that should prompt a call:
- Vomiting or diarrhea that repeats or continues
- Unusual sleepiness, weakness, or difficulty staying awake
- Agitation or restlessness that does not settle
- Any change that worries you, even if it does not appear on this list
Pet Poison Helpline gives an estimate that catnip effects last around 10 to 15 minutes. Treat that as a typical duration, not a guarantee. A cat that still seems unwell after that window, or that gets worse, needs professional advice. Do not wait for a set number of minutes to pass before calling if your cat is unwell.

What to do if your cat eats catnip
Use the steps below. They are general safety steps, and the veterinarian or poison-control specialist should guide any treatment for your cat.
- Remove any remaining plant material, product, or toy from your cat’s reach.
- Note what was involved: the plant, the product name if it came in a package, and the form (fresh, dried, powder, or sprayed toy).
- Estimate how much may have been eaten. If you cannot tell, say so; an unknown amount is itself a reason to call.
- Note when the exposure happened and what you have observed since.
- Call your veterinarian, or the ASPCA Poison Control line at (888) 426-4435. The ASPCA’s service page states that it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and that a consultation fee may apply.
Decision guide
| Situation | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| A small, known amount, with no signs or only mild, brief behavior change | Keep your cat somewhere safe and watch closely. Call a veterinarian if anything changes or if you are unsure. |
| A large or unknown amount, even without signs yet | Call a veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control line promptly. |
| Repeated vomiting, persistent diarrhea, or unusual sleepiness or agitation | Contact a veterinarian or poison-control service promptly. |
| Any situation that worries you | Call a professional. Do not rely on a behavior change alone to judge how serious it is. |
What not to do
- Do not induce vomiting at home. VCA’s cat toxicology guidance warns that no over-the-counter products safely induce vomiting in cats, and it names salt and hydrogen peroxide as substances that can cause injury or poisoning.
- Do not assume vomiting or diarrhea is harmless. These are reported signs of catnip exposure, and a cat that keeps having them should be assessed.
- Do not diagnose from behavior alone. A cat that is sedated or wired after catnip may be showing a normal reaction, or something more serious. Only a veterinarian can tell the difference.
Offering catnip more safely
If you want to give your cat catnip as enrichment, keep the amount small and the access controlled. A catnip toy can offer a contained way to provide the plant, but no toy removes the risk of ingestion, and a cat can still chew or swallow material from it. Offer a small amount of catnip, supervise the first few sessions, and remove the toy or plant when your cat loses interest. Check with your veterinarian before giving catnip to a kitten, an older cat, or a cat with a known health condition.
