Your veterinarian may recommend one when a lump, a skin change that is not resolving, or an abnormality found during an internal exam needs a more definite diagnosis, or when the tissue findings could change treatment. How the sample is taken depends on where the problem is and on your cat’s health, and it often requires sedation or general anesthesia.
What a biopsy is
VCA Animal Hospitals describes a biopsy as the surgical removal of a tissue sample from a suspicious lesion, and that tissue is then examined for its structure and cell features (VCA, Cytology, Biopsy, and Histopathology).
Biopsy (tissue) versus cytology (cells)
Two tests are often confused. Histopathology examines prepared tissue sections under a microscope, showing how tissue is organized as well as which cells are present. Cytology examines individual cells collected by a method such as a needle sample. Cytology is often the first look at a lump and may not require sedation, but it is less definitive and may not show whether a tumor has invaded the surrounding tissue. A cell sample and a tissue sample answer different questions, so cytology is frequently a starting point rather than the final answer.
Why a veterinarian may recommend a biopsy
Skin lesions that do not improve
A skin biopsy may be considered for a suspicious growth or a skin area that has not improved with treatment. Examining the tissue can help distinguish among causes such as infection, allergic or autoimmune disease, and benign or malignant tumors (VCA, Skin Biopsy in Cats).

Lumps and masses
Appearance alone cannot reliably tell a veterinarian what a mass is. Microscopic analysis can classify the lesion and helps inform prognosis and treatment planning. Cornell University’s Sprecher Institute states that an incisional biopsy is recommended when a definitive diagnosis or histologic grade would influence a treatment decision (Cornell, Diagnosis and Staging).
Internal abnormalities
Biopsy can also investigate problems inside the body. Ultrasound can guide a sample from an abnormal organ area (VCA, Ultrasound Examination in Cats). Endoscopy can sample the lining of the gastrointestinal tract (VCA, Endoscopy – Gastrointestinal in Cats). The right test depends on where the suspected problem is and what tissue is needed.

The main types of biopsy
The approach is selected for the site and the diagnostic question. The table compares the common methods described in veterinary guidance. The veterinarian chooses the method for your individual cat.
| Method | What is removed | Typical use | Anesthesia or sedation | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Needle sample (cytology) | Individual cells collected with a needle | Initial look at a lump | May not require sedation (VCA cytology guidance) | Less definitive; may not show invasion of surrounding tissue |
| Punch biopsy | A small circular piece of skin | Skin lesions | Skin site may be numbed with local anesthetic; sedation or general anesthesia depending on location, patient, and procedure | Small sample may not be representative of the whole lesion |
| Wedge biopsy | A slice or chunk of tissue | Sampling part of a larger lesion | Surgical; general anesthesia may be needed for a larger or internal sample | Sampling error if the piece is not representative |
| Incisional biopsy | Part of a mass | Diagnosis when a definitive result or grade would change treatment | Surgical; anesthesia plan set by the veterinarian | Biopsy tract can affect later surgery or radiation planning |
| Excisional biopsy | The whole mass | Removing and examining the entire lesion | Surgical; anesthesia plan set by the veterinarian | Not stated in the cited guidance |
| Endoscopic biopsy | Samples from the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract | Gastrointestinal problems | General anesthesia required (VCA endoscopy guidance) | May miss a tumor confined to deeper layers |
| Ultrasound-guided sample | Tissue from a targeted abnormal area of an organ | Internal organ abnormalities | Short-acting anesthesia or heavy sedation to keep the cat still (VCA ultrasound guidance) | Not stated in the cited VCA ultrasound guidance |
Will my cat need anesthesia or sedation?
Often, but the plan varies. A skin site may be numbed with local anesthetic. Cornell University’s dermatopathology guidance notes that general anesthesia may be necessary for biopsy of certain sensitive sites, including the pawpad, pinna, nasal planum, and mucocutaneous junctions (Cornell, Dermatopathology). For ultrasound-guided sampling, VCA says short-acting anesthesia or heavy sedation is used to keep the cat still and help prevent complications.

Before any procedure that involves anesthesia, pre-surgical evaluation is used to identify health concerns and reduce unexpected anesthesia complications. It lowers risk but does not eliminate it (VCA, Pre-surgical Preparation and Testing). Your cat’s age and health history shape what testing is recommended.
Is a biopsy dangerous for my cat?
Risk depends on the individual cat, the disease, the site, and the method. VCA identifies the underlying disease and the anesthetic as the main sources of risk.

Bleeding and anesthetic risk
Excessive bleeding can occur in some cases, particularly with tumors of blood vessels or with tumors in organs such as the liver (VCA, Cytology, Biopsy, and Histopathology). Ask your veterinarian how bleeding risk applies to the specific site before the procedure.
When the result is inconclusive
A biopsy samples only part of the tissue, so it can miss a problem or give an inconclusive result, especially if the sample is too small or not representative. VCA notes that a second biopsy may sometimes be needed. In gastrointestinal endoscopy, samples come from the inner lining and may miss a tumor confined to deeper layers. The clinical team may consider further tests or full-thickness sampling when indicated (VCA, Endoscopy – Gastrointestinal in Cats).

Planning the sampling site for tumors
For suspected tumors, where an incisional biopsy is placed can matter for later treatment. The sampled tract may need to be removed during definitive surgery or included in a radiation field (Cornell, Diagnosis and Staging). This is a planning discussion for the veterinary team; owners should not choose or perform the biopsy site themselves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long biopsy results take
The tissue is preserved and sent to a diagnostic laboratory, where it is prepared, sectioned, stained, and assessed by a veterinary pathologist. The report may identify the lesion and, for tumors, may help with classification and prognosis. It may also indicate whether a removed mass appears completely excised. Your veterinarian interprets the findings alongside the examination and any other tests.
Timing varies. VCA’s general biopsy guidance says results often take up to a week (VCA, Cytology, Biopsy, and Histopathology). VCA’s gastrointestinal endoscopy page, updated 10 December 2024, says a final biopsy diagnosis may take several weeks depending on circumstances. These are estimates, not a guaranteed turnaround, so ask the clinic when and how results will be reported.
Caring for your cat after a biopsy
Aftercare is specific to the procedure and the site. Follow the discharge instructions your clinic gives you for the exact biopsy location. In general, VCA advises the following (VCA Dallas Animal Specialty Hospital, Tissue Biopsies):
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A cone (Elizabethan collar) or surgical recovery garment may be recommended to stop licking. Use one only when your veterinarian recommends it for your cat and the biopsy location.
Quick Recap
Questions to ask your veterinarian
- What specific diagnosis or treatment decision is this biopsy meant to clarify?
- Is a needle sample, a punch or incisional biopsy, excision, endoscopy, or an image-guided approach appropriate, and why?
- What anesthesia or sedation is planned, and how do my cat’s age and health affect that plan?
- What are the risks for this site and procedure, and is pre-anesthetic testing recommended?
- When will results be available, who will explain them, and what happens if the result is inconclusive?
- What restrictions and incision care should I follow, and should my cat wear a cone or recovery garment?
- What does the estimate include (procedure, anesthesia, laboratory and pathologist fees, medications, follow-up), and could additional testing be needed?
