It is worth trying if you want a plant-based clumping litter, you have one to three cats, and you can accept some tracking. The odor-control figures on the brand’s pages are company claims with no visible date or method, so treat them as the starting point for your own trial rather than proof. Choose the formula by household size first, then by your scent preference and odor problem.
This article does not report hands-on testing by our team. It weighs the brand’s published product pages against one independent editorial review, and it flags where the evidence stops.
Which Naturally Fresh formula fits your household
The brand’s official FAQ splits its clumping range by cat count. Quick-Clumping is aimed at households with one or two cats, and the brand says its harder clumps make cleanup easier. Multi-Cat is aimed at two or more cats and adds a proprietary malodor counteractant that the brand says targets urine and fecal smells. Both are made from fine walnut-shell granules, and the Multi-Cat product page repeats the counteractant claim.
The wider line includes variants that the brand describes in short product copy. The table below lists what the brand states for each. Where the brand does not give a detail, the cell says so rather than guessing.

How well does Naturally Fresh eliminate odors?
The honest answer is that the brand says it works well and attaches numbers to that claim, but the numbers come without the details that would let you check them. The table lists every odor figure on the brand’s pages.
Rank #2

| Claim | Where the brand states it | Date | Method or comparator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonia odor absorbed three times better than leading clay litter, attributed to an independent study | Quick-Clumping page | Not stated on the page | Not stated; comparator is “leading clay litter” without a named product |
| Same three-times ammonia statement, pointing to an independent study | Multi-Cat page | Not stated on the page | Not stated |
| Eliminates odors 40% more than the prior formula | Brand homepage | Not stated on the page | Not stated |
| Number-one ranking in a scientific Dräger odor-control test | Brand homepage | Not stated on the page | Test date, protocol, and source report not supplied on the page |
Two points follow from the table. First, none of these figures comes with a visible study date, protocol, or report, so you cannot tell which product was compared or under what conditions. Second, the figures do not share a method, so they should not be added together or read as one result. The Quick-Clumping page also says tight clumps may form in as little as 15 minutes; that is the brand’s description of clumping speed, not a measured result.
What the independent editorial review found
The most useful outside observation is a Cats.com review. Its reviewer found odor control effective and clumping satisfactory. That review is several years old, and it describes one reviewer’s experience rather than a controlled test. Its results match the brand’s direction on odor and clumping, but they cannot confirm the specific percentages above.
Rank #3
- For Cat and Kitty Litter Box - Naturally Fresh Cat Litter is made from all-natural walnut shells, and this eco-conscious litter neutralizes odors better than clay, pine, corn, and wheat litters.
Is Naturally Fresh litter flushable?
The brand does not offer a blanket yes. Its FAQ tells you to check local and state regulations before flushing, with particular attention to public systems and septic systems. Treat flushing as something you verify for your own plumbing and local rules, not a default step in your cleaning routine.
Dust, tracking, and allergy considerations
Two different issues come up here, and they are often confused. Dust refers to what you see when you pour or scoop. Tracking refers to litter stuck to paws and carried out of the box.
Rank #4
- Made from all-natural walnut shells, this eco-friendly litter neutralizes odors better than clay, pine, corn, and wheat litters.
- This super-absorbent formula produces hard clumps in as few as 15 minutes without sticking to the litter box.
- Silica dust-free means you and your cat can breathe easier in your home, and makes this litter safer for cats or owners with respiratory problems.
- Sustainable, upcycled, and annually renewable – so it's good for your cat and good for the planet.
- This low-tracking material means your cat won't track litter and bacteria through your home.
- Dust: The Cats.com reviewer found dust fairly low but variable from one bag to the next. If a bag seems dustier than the last, that is consistent with the reported variation, and you can check each new bag before filling the box.
- Tracking: The same reviewer found more tracking than heavier clay litter because the granules are light. Plan on a mat under the box and more frequent sweeping.
- Fine particles: The brand says fine particles are naturally present in its plant-based ingredients and distinguishes them from silica dust. It does not describe the product as dust-free, and you should not treat it as one.
- Respiratory risk: The brand says it would not recommend the product for people who may be prone to anaphylaxis from airborne particulates. If that applies to anyone in the home, do not use this litter without medical advice.
- Scented formula: If a cat has a negative reaction to Harmony Lavender & Bamboo, the brand says to stop using it and consult a veterinarian.
How to switch to Naturally Fresh
The brand’s transition method is gradual. Follow these steps, using the brand’s own guidance on depth and timing.
- Empty and clean the litter box, then add one to two inches of Naturally Fresh.
- Cover that layer with the litter the cat is already using, so the new litter sits underneath.
- At each later full change, add a little more Naturally Fresh and a little less of the old litter until the box holds only the new product.
- The brand says most cats adjust within one or two changes. If your cat avoids the box during the switch, slow the process rather than pushing through.
Ongoing care
- Fill the box to about three inches of litter.
- Scoop clumps and solid waste at least once a day, and top up as needed.
- Clean and sanitize the box about every 30 days.
- The brand estimates at least 30 days between full changes for a single cat, depending on your odor needs. This is brand guidance, not a guarantee, and a multi-cat home will usually change litter more often.
Where to buy and what it costs
The brand names Petco, PetSmart, Chewy, and local independent pet stores as retailers and provides a store locator on its site. A Target listing confirms a 14 lb Quick-Clumping product, but Target’s displayed price and stock change often, so check the live page before you buy. The Cats.com prices are from a review several years old and should not be used as current prices.

Verdict: who should try it, and who should skip it
Naturally Fresh is a reasonable choice for a cat guardian who wants a plant-based clumping litter and can live with some tracking. Start with the formula that matches your cat count. Use Multi-Cat if two or more cats share the box, and Quick-Clumping for one or two cats. Choose an unscented formula unless your household specifically wants lavender and bamboo scent.
Quick Recap
- Good fit: One to three cats, a preference for plant-based litter, and willingness to use a mat and sweep more often.
- Consider another option: Anyone with a risk of anaphylaxis to airborne particulates, a home where very low tracking matters most, or a cat sensitive to scent.
- Test before committing: Run the full transition and at least one full 30-day cycle before judging odor, because the odor figures on the brand’s pages cannot be checked from here.
