Most Sphynx cats do not need a food made for their breed. They need a food labeled complete and balanced for their life stage, portioned to their actual body condition. The one breed-level difference veterinary sources point to is metabolism: Sphynx cats may need more food than many coated breeds to keep a healthy weight. The Cats.com review updated April 7, 2026 says most Sphynx cats need nothing more or less than the same high-quality food as any other cat, and that is the sound starting point for choosing.
Do Sphynx cats need a special formula?
Hairlessness alone is not a nutritional requirement. The Cats.com review states that a breed-specific food is not necessary for most Sphynx cats. VCA Animal Hospitals, a veterinary hospital group whose breed guidance is written for owners, describes the breed differently in one important way:
“This breed has a high metabolism and needs to eat more than most ‘hairy’ cat breeds to maintain a healthy weight.”
Read together, the two statements mean the category of food is not automatically different, but the amount a particular Sphynx should eat can be. Choose the food first on its nutritional adequacy, then set portions for the individual cat.

What to check on the label first
- The adequacy statement. Look for wording that the food is complete and balanced for a specific life stage, such as adult maintenance, growth, or all life stages. VCA explains that this statement shows the food meets nutrient guidelines for that life stage, and that it may rest on formulation or on a feeding trial. A food that is complete for kittens is not necessarily the right food for an adult cat, and the reverse is also true.
- Calories per unit. Calories are listed per can, cup, or ounce depending on format. Use this number, not the bag size or a feeding chart on the front, to work out portions.
- Format and moisture. Wet, dry, freeze-dried, and air-dried foods differ in moisture content, which changes how much water the cat takes in from food and how the food must be prepared.
- The ingredient list. VCA notes that an ingredient list alone is less informative than whether the diet is complete and balanced and suited to the individual cat. Treat ingredient claims as a secondary check.
How much to feed a Sphynx cat
Because of the metabolism point above, portion size is the variable most likely to need adjustment. The practical sequence is:
- Take the calories per unit from the label and the number of units your cat is currently eating.
- Ask your veterinarian for a target body weight and a body condition assessment for your cat.
- Weigh the cat on a schedule your veterinarian agrees to, and adjust portions when weight or condition moves away from the target.
Do not copy a portion from a breed article or a product page without checking it against the cat’s own weight trend.

Skin and coat: what diet can and cannot do
Sphynx skin produces natural oils that can leave oily spots on bedding and furniture. VCA recommends daily sponging and notes that ears need cleaning weekly. Those are grooming tasks, not dietary ones, and a change of food will not replace them.
On the nutrition side, VCA says protein and energy support skin and coat development. Its general adult-cat guidance is 30% to 45% protein and 10% to 15% fat on a dry-matter basis. The page gives these as ranges for adult cats in general, not as a Sphynx-specific prescription, and the page does not state the year of publication.

Label values are usually given as fed, meaning they include water. To compare a label with those ranges, convert to dry matter by dividing the as-fed percentage by the fraction of the food that is not water. For example, a wet food listing 10% protein and 78% moisture contains 22% dry matter, so its protein is 10 ÷ 0.22, or about 45% on a dry-matter basis.
VCA also describes omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA as potentially helpful for inflammatory skin processes, but says the appropriate amount of added omega-3 should be discussed with a veterinarian. Do not expect a particular food or supplement to resolve a skin problem. Ask your veterinarian about any skin symptoms before changing diet.

Royal Canin’s Sphynx-specific food
Cats.com names Royal Canin Sphynx Adult, a food the manufacturer markets for the breed, while cautioning that breed-specific food is not necessary for most Sphynx cats. Being named in a review does not make a food superior or required. VCA sets the standard any such product must meet:
“However, regardless of kibble size or nutrient modifications, diets marketed as ‘complete and balanced’ must meet guidelines set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) for the stated life stage on a label.”
In other words, a breed-marketed food has to pass the same adequacy standard as any other complete food. Its breed label adds no extra requirement that a cat has to meet.
Choosing among the options
- Confirm the adequacy statement matches your cat’s life stage.
- Check that calories per unit fit the portion you can feed while keeping weight on target.
- Choose a format you can feed consistently. A freeze-dried or air-dried food may need rehydration or a moisture-rich partner, as the review notes.
- Test acceptance. A food the cat refuses is not a useful food, whatever its label says.
- Compare current price per day and check availability in your area.
- Review the choice with your veterinarian if the cat has skin symptoms, weight changes, or another medical condition.
When to involve a veterinarian
- Skin symptoms, oily skin that worsens, or any question about omega-3 supplements.
- Weight loss or weight gain over a period your veterinarian has set.
- Any suggestion of a raw diet or a therapeutic diet. Neither is a default choice for Sphynx cats, and both need veterinary context before use.
VCA’s guidance is that the veterinarian is the best source for choosing the most appropriate nutrient profile for a particular cat.
