It is the antidote for anticoagulant rodenticide (rat poison) poisoning in cats, and it has a few other clinical uses. A cat that may have eaten rat poison needs a veterinarian or pet poison service right away, because the dangerous bleeding can start days after exposure, and a cat can look well in the meantime. Do not give vitamin K1 to a cat on your own, and do not work out a dose at home.
What vitamin K1 is and when veterinarians use it
Phytonadione is vitamin K1. It supports the liver’s production of clotting proteins that depend on vitamin K. Veterinary references describe it for several clinical situations:
- Poisoning by anticoagulant rodenticides, the most common reason a cat receives it. These poisons block the body’s ability to use vitamin K1, which leads to uncontrolled bleeding.
- Poisoning by sweet clover, dicumarol, or sulfaquinoxaline, which the VCA Animal Hospitals reference lists alongside rodenticides.
- Bleeding disorders linked to conditions such as liver failure.
- Suspected feline hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) with markedly prolonged clotting times. This is a separate clinical setting managed by a clinician. It is not a general supplement recommendation for cats.
Because rodenticide poisoning is the use most owners will face, the rest of this article focuses on it.
Can I give my cat vitamin K?
Not without veterinary direction. The drug, route, dose, and duration depend on what the cat was exposed to, when, how much, whether bleeding has started, and what the clotting tests show. Vitamin K1 is also not interchangeable across products. Some forms are for oral use, injectable forms are given by a veterinarian in hospital, and intravenous use is generally discouraged. A home dose calculated from a reference table, or leftover tablets from another pet or a person, can delay proper treatment or cause harm.

Suspected rat poison: what to do first
- Call your veterinarian or a pet poison service immediately. Do not wait for symptoms, because signs can be delayed.
- Tell them what the cat may have eaten, how much could be missing, and when the exposure may have happened. Keep the product packaging in hand.
- Do not induce vomiting and do not give activated charcoal at home. VCA warns that both can cause serious harm and need professional management.
- Follow the instructions you are given, including any appointment for clotting tests.
How quickly signs appear
Timing varies by source, so treat the windows as approximate. Merck Veterinary Manual (page reviewed November 2025) reports anticoagulant rodenticide coagulopathy developing within 2 to 5 days of ingestion. VCA’s cat-owner article (2026) describes one to two days for clotting factors to be used up and three to seven days before poisoning signs appear. A cat can be symptom-free during that period while bleeding is already developing.
Watch for weakness, pale gums, breathing difficulty, poor appetite, abdominal swelling, vomiting, dark or bloody stool, bruising, and unexplained swelling. Bleeding can be internal, including in the abdomen, chest, lungs, joints, or gastrointestinal tract, so the absence of visible bleeding is not reassuring.

Treatment length and how veterinarians check progress
Published treatment protocols are weight-based and can run for weeks. The figures below are reference doses from veterinary textbooks. They are not instructions for owners, and they are not interchangeable with each other.
| Source and context | Route and schedule as stated | Monitoring as stated |
|---|---|---|
| Merck Veterinary Manual, anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning, nonclinically affected patients | Oral 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 28 days, or 5 mg/kg every 24 hours for 28 days | Prothrombin time (PT) checked 2 to 3 days after treatment ends; treatment continued or restarted if PT is prolonged |
| Merck Veterinary Manual, anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning, clinically affected patients | Same oral options as above. The source notes that warfarin’s shorter half-life can make a two-week course sufficient in this less common exposure | Not stated in the same entry; the veterinarian sets follow-up |
| Merck Veterinary Manual, coagulation protein disorders | Initial subcutaneous dose of 2.5 to 3 mg/kg, then oral 1.25 to 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 14 to 28 days | PT reassessed 48 hours after the course |
| Merck Veterinary Manual, feline hepatic lipidosis with severe prolonged PIVKA clotting times | Three doses of 0.5 to 1.5 mg/kg intramuscularly or subcutaneously every 12 hours; intravenous use cautioned against | Not stated in the same entry; clotting status guides care |
The sources do not agree on when to recheck clotting. That is why timing belongs to the veterinarian, who weighs the toxin, the cat’s clinical state, the product, and test results. A cat may look better before its clotting has normalized, so stopping treatment should be based on PT results, not on how the cat appears.

Forms, administration, and what to know at home
VCA’s phytonadione monograph lists capsules, liquid, powder, chewable tablets, and injectable forms. The injectable form is given by a veterinarian in hospital. Oral forms are given at home only as directed.
- Give oral doses with food. VCA advises a fatty meal, and Merck notes that a fatty meal improves absorption and is the preferred route in rodenticide cases.
- Measure liquids carefully, using the measuring device supplied with the product.
- Complete the course as prescribed, even if the cat seems fine.
- Do not give intravenous vitamin K1 unless the specific product is labeled for veterinary intravenous use. Merck and VCA both caution that intravenous use carries a risk of anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions.
Side effects and cautions
VCA describes side effects as uncommon, and oral vitamin K1 is generally well tolerated. Allergic reactions can still occur, and sensitivity can develop after repeated doses. Contact a veterinarian immediately if you see irregular breathing, rash, fever, or puffiness or swelling around the face.

- Use caution in pregnant or nursing cats. Discuss this with your veterinarian before any treatment.
- Tell your veterinarian about all medicines, especially mineral oil, oral antibiotics, warfarin, and other blood thinners, which VCA lists as requiring caution with phytonadione.
- In feline hepatic lipidosis, Merck warns that excessively high doses given too frequently can cause Heinz body hemolysis, a form of red blood cell damage. This is one reason the clinical protocol is short and supervised.
Is vitamin K1 the antidote for rat poison?
For anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning, yes. Merck’s rodenticide entry states plainly that vitamin K1 is the antidote. It is effective because it restores the vitamin K-dependent clotting the poison blocks. It does not reverse the poison’s effects instantly, and it does not replace supportive veterinary care, monitoring, or the clotting tests that show whether treatment is complete.
