Frontline Gold for Cats is a topical flea and tick product for cats and kittens. Its active ingredients are fipronil, (S)-methoprene and pyriproxyfen (Nylar). The label directions reproduced by Drugs.com Veterinary call for one applicator, applied in one spot between the shoulder blades, for cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and at least 1.5 pounds, with no reapplication for 30 days. The label lists skin irritation, vomiting and diarrhea among possible reactions. This guide explains each of those points, what to check before using the product, and how Gold differs from Frontline Plus, which is a separate formulation.

What Frontline Gold for Cats contains and what it targets

Frontline Gold is a spot-on (topical) product. Unlike a collar or an oral tablet, it is applied to the skin, and the active ingredients spread through the skin’s oils over the following hours. The Drugs.com Veterinary label text names three active ingredients: fipronil, which acts on the nervous system of fleas and ticks, and two insect growth regulators, (S)-methoprene and pyriproxyfen, which interfere with flea development.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) quick reference lists Frontline Gold as a topical product with those same ingredients. It lists activity against:

  • Adult and immature cat fleas
  • American dog ticks
  • Lone star ticks
  • Deer ticks
  • Feline chewing lice

These are the parasites named on the label and in the reference. A labeled list is not a guarantee that a cat will never become infected with a tick-borne disease or another parasite. Product coverage also does not replace a vet’s advice on which parasites matter in your area.

  • At least 8 weeks old
  • At least 1.5 pounds

The label also states that the product is approved for cats, including breeding, pregnant and lactating queens. Because this is a consequential safety claim for individual animals, check the current package label before use and ask your veterinarian first if the cat is pregnant, nursing, medicated, debilitated or elderly. The label text itself advises veterinary consultation for medicated, debilitated or aged animals.

How to apply Frontline Gold to a cat

Use the following steps, which follow the label directions as reproduced by Drugs.com Veterinary. Read the printed package label on your own product first, because label wording can change between production runs.

  1. Confirm the cat is at least 8 weeks old and weighs at least 1.5 pounds. Use one applicator per treatment regardless of the cat’s weight, and never double the dose.
  2. Make sure the cat’s coat and skin are dry.
  3. Part the hair between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible, so the liquid reaches the skin rather than the fur.
  4. Squeeze the entire contents of the single applicator onto one spot on the skin. Do not divide the dose across several spots.
  5. Keep the product away from the cat’s mouth. The label says to prevent ingestion.
  6. Wash your hands after application. Do not use the applicator on any other animal.
  7. Mark your calendar. The label says not to reapply for 30 days.

Drying, bathing and contact restrictions

The application site needs time to dry before the cat is handled normally. The label text describes these restrictions:

  • Fragrance-free formula, waterproof after 24 hours of application
  • Keep the cat dry at the time of application and for 48 hours afterward.
  • Prevent grooming until the product has dried, so the cat does not lick the treated area.
  • Keep the treated cat apart from other animals for 24 hours after application.
  • Bathing may take place after 48 hours. Do not bathe the cat earlier than that.

If a cat’s coat gets wet or a second animal licks the treated area within these windows, check the package label for the manufacturer’s current instructions and contact your veterinarian or the product hotline for advice.

Possible side effects and what to do

The label text lists these possible effects:

  • Skin reactions: redness at the application site, scratching, or other signs of discomfort.
  • Gastrointestinal signs: vomiting or diarrhea.

The label does not give a frequency for these effects, so do not assume they are rare or common. If you notice any of these signs, monitor the cat and contact your veterinarian or the product hotline. Keep the product packaging on hand so you can report the exact product name and the date of application.

Dogs and other species have different products and different safety margins. The label warns against using this product on dogs, rabbits or other animals. Never apply a dog product to a cat, and do not substitute a different Frontline formulation simply because the name looks similar. PetMD’s veterinary-reviewed overview, updated June 25, 2026, likewise advises using the formulation labeled for the pet’s species and following the label or veterinary directions.

Frontline Gold versus Frontline Plus

Gold and Plus are different formulations. Gold includes pyriproxyfen; the Plus label does not. The table compares the sources that were reviewed. The Plus figures come from a 2014 EPA-accepted label and should not be read as Gold’s composition.

Use the table as a starting point for a product conversation with your vet, not as a ranking. Frontline’s formulations are set by the manufacturer and can change, and the EPA database is the place to confirm what a registered label currently says. The EPA Pesticide Product and Label System allows search by product, company, active chemical or registration number, and it contains labels accepted under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Check these points before you buy or apply

  • Confirm the product name reads “Frontline Gold” and that it is labeled for cats, not dogs.
  • Confirm the cat is at least 8 weeks old and 1.5 pounds.
  • Confirm you have not treated the cat within the last 30 days with another topical flea product that contains overlapping ingredients, and ask your vet about any overlap.
  • Ask your veterinarian before use if the cat is pregnant, nursing, medicated, unwell or elderly.
  • Keep the product away from children and other pets during application and the drying period.

For the current instructions, read the printed label on the package you bought and cross-check it with your veterinarian. Those two sources take precedence over any summary, including this one.
