You may be a cat person if you notice the small signals cats give, enjoy their company without expecting constant attention, and find yourself curious about their routines. These are relatable clues, not a scientific test: “cat person” is an informal identity, not a diagnosis or a reliable personality profile.
Eight signs you might be a cat person
None of these signs is a requirement. You can recognize yourself in one, several, or none and still enjoy cats.
1. You notice the little signals
You pay attention to a tail held high, a slow blink, an ear turning toward a sound, or a cat choosing to settle nearby. You know that context matters: a cat’s body language is not a simple word-for-word translation, and a change from that cat’s usual behavior may deserve attention rather than an affectionate interpretation.
2. You appreciate company that comes with boundaries
You like sharing a room with a cat even when it is doing its own thing. A cat resting nearby, rather than in your lap, can still feel like good company. You are comfortable letting the cat decide when to approach and when to move away.

You do not assume every cat enjoys being picked up, meeting visitors, or playing with the same toy. You are willing to adapt your approach to the cat in front of you rather than expect it to fit a stereotype.
6. You enjoy interaction on the cat’s terms
You see the relationship as an exchange, not a one-way performance. A cat may initiate play or contact, respond to your attention, or choose to disengage. 7. You care about the cat as an individual
You are more interested in a particular cat’s temperament and needs than in assumptions based on breed. A 2021 review notes that studies comparing breeds’ behavior toward people are relatively few, so broad breed-based personality claims should be treated cautiously.
8. You think about what a cat needs, not only what you enjoy
You understand that liking cats is different from being ready to care for one. You consider the animal’s health, daily care, household, and long-term fit—not just the appeal of a cuddly moment.

What research can—and cannot—say about cat people
Studies have examined people who describe themselves as cat people, but they do not establish a standard set of signs or a personality test. In a 2010 study of 4,565 participants, Sam Gosling, Carson Sandy, and Jeff Potter reported group-level differences on some Big Five personality dimensions among people identifying as dog people, cat people, both, or neither. Their abstract says: “Results suggest that dog people are higher on Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, but lower on Neuroticism and Openness than are cat people.” The authors also noted that prior findings had been conflicting. Those results describe group averages in one study, not traits that apply to every individual.
A 2014 companion-animal attachment study found that identifying as a cat person, dog person, or both predicted affection for a pet alongside selected personality variables. That finding concerns measured attachment in that study; it does not show that identifying as a cat person causes affection or determines anyone’s personality. Reviews by Dennis C. Turner survey research on cat-human communication, personality, and relationships, but they do not validate an eight-sign checklist.

If you are considering adopting a cat
Recognizing yourself in these signs can tell you that you enjoy cats; it cannot establish that a particular cat—or cat ownership—is right for your circumstances. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises potential adopters to consider the individual cat’s personality and age, other pets in the household, and care needs. As Cornell puts it, “An adult cat’s personality is already established, so you’ll have a better idea of how the cat will fit in your particular home situation.”
Ask about the cat’s known temperament and routine, and think through how its needs fit your home and household. Choose based on the individual animal rather than a breed stereotype; evidence comparing breeds’ behavior toward people remains limited.
When a behavior change needs attention
A new behavior is not automatically a sign of affection, personality, or a cat’s usual quirks. The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ behavior guidelines note that changes from a cat’s normal behavior can reflect illness, pain, fear, or anxiety. If you notice a meaningful change, consider the context and seek veterinary advice when appropriate rather than dismissing it as cute or interpreting it as proof of a bond.
