Most dogs and cats recover well at home when owners do five things: restrict activity as the clinic directs, keep the incision clean, dry and untouched, stop licking, give medications exactly as prescribed, and know which changes need a phone call. Your discharge sheet and the operating veterinarian’s instructions override any general guidance, including this article, because the procedure, the incision’s location and your pet’s health determine the plan. If your pet is getting worse or you are unsure what to do, call the operating clinic or its emergency service.

Start with your discharge instructions

Before you leave the hospital, confirm the details that general guidance cannot settle for your pet. Ask the team:

  • How long activity must stay restricted, and whether that limit is different for stairs, jumping or outdoor time.
  • Whether the incision has visible skin sutures, buried stitches, a drain or a bandage, and what care each one needs.
  • Whether a cone, a recovery garment or a crate or small room is recommended, and why.
  • Which medications to give, how often, and what to do if a dose is missed or refused.
  • When the recheck is, and which after-hours number or emergency service to use.

How long to restrict activity

VCA’s post-operative guidance for dogs and cats (both last updated September 18, 2025) and its incision-care pages for dogs and cats (last updated June 20, 2025) describe roughly 7 to 14 days of restricted activity for many routine incision recoveries. Major procedures can require longer. Treat that range as a general reference, not your pet’s schedule.

Situation Dogs Cats
Outdoor time Brief, controlled leash outings only when the clinic allows them Stay indoors
Running and jumping Prevent for the full restriction period Prevent for the full restriction period, including climbing to high surfaces
Confinement A crate or small room if the veterinarian prescribes it A crate or small room if the veterinarian prescribes it
Typical restriction for routine incisions (VCA general guidance) About 7 to 14 days; longer for major procedures About 7 to 14 days; longer for major procedures

Confinement is a clinic decision, not a default. If the recommended crate or room cannot reliably stop your pet from running or jumping, tell the clinic before you go home so a different plan can be made.

  • [DURABLE] This pet recovery cone is difficult to be damaged by scratching of dogs and cats. It can be used repeatedly and has long service life. But it's plastic. Please stay away from fire!

Caring for the incision

Keep it dry and clean

Do not bathe your pet or let the incision get wet during the restriction period unless the clinic says otherwise. Keep bedding dry and clean as well, since damp or dirty surfaces can irritate the site.

Check it at least twice a day

For an unbandaged incision, look at it at least twice a day. Note whether the redness is fading, whether the swelling is stable, and whether there is any discharge, odor or gap in the edges. Compare each check with the previous one; a trend matters more than a single look.

Do not put anything on it

Do not apply creams, ointments, disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or other products unless the veterinarian specifically directs you to. VCA’s incision-care pages warn that peroxide and alcohol can damage healing cells and delay healing. If your pet has a drain or bandage, follow the clinic’s specific instructions instead of applying the directions for an ordinary incision.

Stopping licking and chewing

Licking or chewing can damage sutures and introduce infection, so preventing access to the incision is one of the most important parts of home care. The usual tools are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A cone (Elizabethan collar). The most common option. Use the one the clinic provided.
  • A recovery garment. May suit some incision locations, but not all.

Choose between them, or confirm the one you have, by asking whether your pet can reach the incision while wearing it, whether the incision’s location suits the device, whether it interferes with eating or drinking, whether it stays in place, and what the clinic recommends. VCA’s pages do not compare or rank specific brands or designs, and no single device is guaranteed to work for every pet. If your pet still reaches the incision, call the clinic rather than swapping in an untested alternative. If the pet starts licking and no collar or suitable garment was provided, contact the clinic the same day.

Medications, feeding and pain control

  • Read each medication label and give it exactly as prescribed.
  • Call the clinic if giving a dose is difficult, if you suspect a side effect, or if you are unsure whether to continue a drug.
  • Do not give human painkillers or supplements unless a veterinarian has directed it.

Some pets eat very little on the first evening after anesthesia. VCA’s general instructions suggest offering a smaller first meal, but any feeding directions in your discharge plan take precedence. A low appetite on that first evening is common enough to be expected; a pet that refuses food or water beyond that window is a reason to call.

VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists states in its undated handout Anesthesia Essentials: Post-anesthesia recovery and home care, under the heading “PAIN CONTROL”: “Effective pain management is a very important part of caring for your pet and helping them recover post-operatively.” The document names no individual author, so attribute the statement to the hospital.

What to expect in the first days

Bleeding and seepage

VCA’s incision pages describe a small amount of intermittent blood seepage in the first 24 hours as possible. Continuous or heavy bleeding, or seepage that continues beyond that window, warrants a call.

Redness, swelling and bruising

Mild redness in the first few days and some bruising can occur. The trend should be improving. Redness or swelling that is excessive or getting worse, an unpleasant odor, or discharge are warning signs. Do not try to diagnose an infection from a photograph, and do not wait out a problem if your pet is deteriorating.

Sutures and rechecks

Visible skin sutures are commonly removed about 7 to 14 days after surgery, according to VCA’s incision guidance. Some sutures are buried and dissolve on their own, so you may not have a removal appointment at all. The clinic schedules any recheck. Activity restriction can continue after external stitches come out, particularly after major procedures. VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists notes that a progress exam may be recommended after surgery or dentistry.
