New Kitten Checklist: Everything You Need Before Bringing Your Kitten Home

Before a kitten comes home, you need a secure carrier, growth-appropriate food, washable dishes, a litter setup, safe bedding, and toys. Prepare one quiet room, remove hazards, and book a vet visit.

Before a kitten comes home, you need six things in place: a secure carrier, food suited to growth, washable dishes, a litter setup, a soft resting place with safe bedding, and age-appropriate toys and scratching surfaces. You also need one small room prepared as a starter space, hazards removed from it, and a veterinary appointment booked for the first few days. Everything below follows that order, from what to buy to what to do on arrival day.

Essentials to have before pickup

VCA Animal Hospitals’ New Kitten Checklist groups the core supplies as functional essentials, and those are the items to secure before you collect the kitten. (VCA New Kitten Checklist)

A secure cat carrier

The carrier is the one item with a direct safety rationale. VCA says a kitten should not be loose in a moving vehicle, so the carrier is for the trip home and for any future travel. Choose one that closes securely and gives the kitten room to stand and turn. A familiar soft towel or blanket inside makes it more inviting. Leaving the carrier out with the door open in the kitten’s room lets it become a normal, safe place before it is ever needed for a trip. (VCA New Kitten Checklist; VCA, Bringing Home Your New Kitten)

The food the kitten already eats

Choose food labeled as appropriate for growth. VCA’s checklist refers to AAFCO approval for growing kittens or for all life stages. Ask the shelter, breeder, or veterinarian what the kitten is currently eating and how much it is offered. Keeping that food for the first days avoids digestive upset caused by a sudden change. If you plan to switch, do it gradually and with veterinary input rather than by following a generic portion chart, because appropriate amounts depend on the individual kitten.

Food and water dishes

Buy washable dishes, and keep the feeding area separate from the litter box. Separation is part of the starter-room layout described below.

Litter box, litter, and scoop

The box should let the kitten enter and turn around comfortably. A very small kitten may need a low-sided box. Start with the same litter the kitten used before, if you know it, and change materials later based on how the kitten uses the box and on veterinary advice. Scoop routinely and keep the box reachable at all times.

A soft resting place and safe bedding

Choose bedding without loose strings or holes where a kitten could catch a claw or tooth. Avoid heated pads or warming products with exposed or chewable cords.

Useful to have in the first few weeks

These items are not needed at minute one, but most households find them useful soon after the kitten arrives. These are categories rather than product recommendations.

  • Grooming tools: a brush or comb suited to the coat type, nail trimmers, and a small training treat supply. A cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste are useful later. Never use human toothpaste or shampoo on a kitten. Ask a veterinary team or groomer which grooming tools suit your kitten.
  • Enzymatic cleaner: for accidents outside the litter box, so odor does not draw the kitten back to the same spot.
  • A latching food container: to keep dry food inaccessible.
  • Identification: a breakaway collar and tag can help, but fit changes as the kitten grows, so check it regularly.
  • Harness and leash: optional, and only for supervised use once the kitten is trained to wear them.
  • A short or low cat tree: adds vertical space. Choose one that matches the kitten’s coordination and watch it explore.
  • Safety gates: useful for closing off rooms or separating the kitten from children or other animals.

Before buying any of these, check the product’s age and size limits and the manufacturer’s instructions, because a design that suits an adult cat may not be safe for a small kitten.

Prepare the starter room

VCA’s guidance on bringing a kitten home centers on one quiet, limited space rather than the whole house. It is the room where the kitten decompresses, and it should be ready before pickup. (VCA, Bringing Home Your New Kitten)

  1. Choose a small room with a door that closes and little foot traffic. A spare bedroom, bathroom, or office often works, provided it is not where a resident pet sleeps or eats.
  2. Place food and water in one corner, and the litter box in a different corner, away from the food and water. Put a comfortable resting spot and a few toys in the room.
  3. Cat-proof the room using the hazard table below before the kitten arrives, not after.
  4. Check that the kitten can reach the litter box, the food, and the resting spot without climbing over furniture it cannot manage yet.

Cat-proof the room and the route to it

Kittens explore with their mouths and claws, and they fit into spaces adults cannot. VCA’s kitten-proofing guidance covers doors, windows, cords, swallowable items, and gaps where a kitten could hide or become trapped. (VCA, How to Kitten-Proof Your Home)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Hazard What to do before the kitten arrives
Windows and doors Secure them so the kitten cannot push through a screen or slip out a door.
Electrical cords Move them out of reach or cover them so they cannot be chewed.
Rubber bands, string, and yarn Keep them in closed containers. Ingested string is a serious hazard.
Small swallowable objects Remove coins, buttons, hair ties, and small toys from floors and low surfaces.
Medications Store them in a closed cabinet, not on counters or in bags on the floor.
Cleaning products Store them on high, latched shelves or in locked cabinets.
Trash Use a lidded or inaccessible can.
Food storage Keep food in closed containers that the kitten cannot open.
Gaps and hiding spots Close off spaces behind appliances, under cabinets, or inside furniture where the kitten could become stuck.

Inspect the room at kitten height, since most of the risks sit at floor level and along the furniture edges a kitten climbs.

Arrival day, step by step

Plan the first hours around the starter room. The goal is to let the kitten settle before it meets more of the house.

  1. Carry the kitten home in the carrier. Keep the carrier closed in the vehicle and do not let the kitten roam.
  2. Bring the carrier into the prepared room. Set it on the floor, open the door, and let the kitten come out when it chooses.
  3. Keep the first visit quiet. Limit visitors and noise. VCA recommends giving the kitten time to get used to the room before exploring anything else.
  4. Expand access gradually. Once the kitten is eating, using the litter box, and moving about the room with confidence, you can open access to nearby rooms while supervising.
  5. Do not force interaction. A hesitant kitten needs time. Keep the carrier available as a familiar hiding and resting place.

VCA’s older article Bringing Home Your New Kitten advises: “Give him lots of time to become familiar with this room before giving him a tour of the entire house.” The same point applies to any kitten, regardless of sex, and the exact pace depends on the individual.

Introducing resident pets

If another cat, dog, or other animal lives in the home, keep the newcomer and the resident pet in separate spaces first. VCA recommends exchanging familiar scents and objects before any face-to-face meetings, and supervising those early meetings closely. (VCA, Kitten Prep and Supplies)

  • Keep feeding areas and litter boxes separate, so the resident pet cannot reach the kitten’s food or litter.
  • Advance slowly. A calm, brief meeting that ends on a good note is more useful than a long one that ends in conflict.

Plan the first veterinary visit

Schedule an initial examination soon after the kitten arrives, and bring any records from the shelter, breeder, or previous owner. Use that visit to decide the health plan, because the right schedule for vaccines, deworming, parasite prevention, and nutrition depends on the kitten’s age, history, and health. VCA’s kitten guide and the ASPCA’s general cat-care guidance both direct owners to a veterinarian for vaccine decisions rather than to a fixed timetable. (VCA, New Kitten Guide; ASPCA, General Cat Care)

At the visit, ask about:

  • Which vaccines the kitten needs now, and the timing of later doses.
  • Deworming and parasite prevention, and what is appropriate for your location.
  • Whether the current food is suitable for growth, and how much to feed.
  • Any signs that suggest a health problem, such as changes in appetite, litter-box use, or energy.

Choosing between product options

There are no product brands or models in this guide that are tested or preferred, so compare options on these four points instead:

  • Fit for the kitten’s size: carrier door and interior height, and litter-box entry height. Small kittens often need a lower entry.
  • Cleaning and durability: whether the item is washable and whether it will hold up to chewing.
  • Hazard control: secure latches, and no chewable cords or loose strings.
  • Continuity: whether the item works with the kitten’s current food and litter while it adjusts to the new home.

Confirm any product choice with the manufacturer’s age and size guidance, and confirm health choices with your veterinarian.
