A 46,000-Year-Old Siberian Roundworm Revived After Thawing—What Scientists Found

Researchers reported a Siberian nematode active after thawing from permafrost associated with plant material dated to about 46,000 years ago. The worm itself was not directly dated.

The creature described as “frozen for 46,000 years” is a microscopic roundworm, not a mammoth or another large Ice Age animal. In a 2023 study, researchers reported that a nematode identified as Panagrolaimus kolymaensis became active after thawing from Siberian permafrost. The age is an estimate based on radiocarbon-dated plant material associated with the burrow, not a direct date of the worm itself.

What was found in the Siberian permafrost?

Researchers recovered the nematodes in 2018 from a fossilized burrow in silt deposits about 40 meters below the surface, according to the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. The 2023 study identified the animal as Panagrolaimus kolymaensis, a previously undescribed species named for its region of origin near the Kolyma River.

The researchers used morphological, genomic and phylogenetic analyses to distinguish the species. Their paper, published in PLOS Genetics, also compared its survival mechanisms with those of Caenorhabditis elegans, a well-studied laboratory nematode.

How old is the roundworm—and how was its age estimated?

The study authors summarized the period of dormancy as about 46,000 years. The underlying radiocarbon date was obtained from plant material associated with the burrow: the Max Planck Institute reported a range of 45,839 to 47,769 years. The worm itself was not directly radiocarbon-dated, so the number is an estimate based on the dated surroundings.

That distinction matters. Biologist Byron Adams, who was not involved in the study, told Scientific American that the dates for the organic material were likely legitimate, while questioning whether the paper ruled out modern surface contamination of the worms. The authors said they had confidence in their collection’s sterility procedures. The concern is a question about whether the specimens share the age of the associated material; it does not establish that contamination occurred.

What does “came back to life” mean?

“Came back to life” is a headline shorthand. The researchers describe the worm as having persisted in cryptobiosis, a dormant state in which metabolism falls below detection. After thawing, the specimens resumed activity. This is not evidence that a dead animal was resurrected: the proposed explanation is that the nematodes remained in an extreme, reversible state of dormancy.

The study authors wrote that P. kolymaensis “suspended life for 46,000 years in the Siberian permafrost.” That phrasing reflects their interpretation of the specimens’ long-term survival and the age of the associated deposit.

What might have helped it survive freezing?

Laboratory experiments examined how the nematodes respond to freezing and dehydration. Mild dehydration before freezing improved survival in P. kolymaensis. The researchers also reported production of trehalose, a sugar that may help cells cope with dehydration and freezing, and found shared genes or mechanisms with C. elegans.

These experiments offer clues about survival biology; they do not reconstruct exactly what happened to the worms in the permafrost over millennia. Zoologist David Wharton, also commenting in Scientific American, questioned how closely the laboratory protocol represented natural conditions, since the test worms were mildly dried before abrupt freezing. That reservation concerns the experiments on freezing mechanisms, rather than the radiocarbon dates for the plant material.

How does the finding compare with earlier nematode records?

The study authors described the result as extending reported nematode cryptobiosis by tens of thousands of years. Their comparisons involve different preservation conditions, so the durations should not be treated as directly equivalent:

Organism or finding Reported duration Preservation or evidence
Panagrolaimus kolymaensis About 46,000 years Reported from Siberian permafrost; age inferred from associated plant material
Plectus murrayi 25.5 years Previously reported frozen in moss
Tylenchus polyhypnus 39 years Previously reported desiccated in a herbarium specimen
Caenorhabditis elegans larvae 480 days Laboratory comparison: viable after treatment and storage at −80°C, as reported by the Max Planck Institute

The 480-day result is a laboratory comparison, not the age of the Siberian specimens. The record claim should also be kept within its stated scope: it concerns reported cryptobiosis in nematodes, not the oldest living organism of any kind.

What could the finding mean for evolution?

Long periods of dormancy could affect how scientists think about generation time and the persistence of lineages. Study co-author Philipp Schiffer said in the Max Planck Institute release that long survival by individual members of a species could allow lineages to re-emerge that might otherwise have gone extinct. That is a proposed evolutionary implication, not evidence that an extinct species was brought back.
