A small accidental taste of ordinary ground cinnamon is unlikely to poison a cat, but cinnamon should not be intentionally fed to cats. ASPCA lists cinnamon as non-toxic to cats. Larger amounts can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach, inhaled powder can cause breathing problems, and cinnamon essential oil is a substantially greater hazard.
Is cinnamon toxic to cats?
Ordinary cinnamon powder is generally considered low toxicity for cats in small amounts. If your cat licks a little cinnamon from a baked item or gets a trace amount on its paw, serious poisoning is unlikely.
However, cinnamon can irritate a cat’s mouth, throat, and digestive tract. A large overdose may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, changes in heart rate, low blood sugar, or liver disease. Dry powder is easy to inhale and may cause coughing, choking, bronchospasm, breathing difficulty, or—in severe cases—pneumonia.
“Natural” does not automatically mean safe. Cinnamon essential oil is concentrated and presents a substantially greater risk than the spice used in cooking. Pet Poison Helpline identifies cinnamon oil as an essential oil that can poison cats.

The form of cinnamon makes a difference
| Exposure | General concern |
|---|---|
| A trace amount in baked food | Usually low risk from the cinnamon itself, although other ingredients may be harmful. |
| A large amount of dry powder | May irritate the mouth and digestive tract; a substantial overdose may cause vomiting, diarrhea, changes in heart rate, low blood sugar, or liver disease. |
| Powder inhaled into the nose or lungs | Can cause coughing, choking, bronchospasm, breathing difficulty, and, in severe cases, pneumonia. |
| Cinnamon stick | May irritate the mouth and stomach and can become a choking hazard or foreign body if swallowed. |
| Cinnamon essential oil or diffuser liquid | Potentially toxic. Swallowing, skin or fur contact, and grooming contaminated fur can all lead to exposure. |
| Concentrated cinnamon flavoring | Treat cautiously; the risk depends on the product and concentration. |
Pet Poison Helpline reports that problems generally require more than about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder for most pets. This is not a guaranteed safe dose and is not a cat-specific dosing rule. Cats vary in size, health, and sensitivity, while essential oil can cause illness in much smaller amounts.
What about cinnamon baked into food?
A small lick of a cinnamon biscuit or piece of bread is usually not dangerous because of the cinnamon. The recipe may be the more important issue, though. Desserts and holiday foods can contain chocolate, alcohol, raisins, macadamia nuts, onion, garlic, or large amounts of fat and sugar.

Do not assume that “pumpkin spice” is just cinnamon. Spice blends may also contain nutmeg or other ingredients, and the food carrying the blend may contain several hazards. Save the packaging or recipe if your cat has eaten more than a small taste.
Symptoms after a cinnamon exposure
Watch for signs such as:
- Drooling, gagging, or pawing at the mouth
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Coughing, choking, wheezing, or noisy breathing
- Loss of appetite or unusual tiredness
- Tremors or wobbliness
- An abnormal heart rate
Essential-oil poisoning can also cause breathing difficulty, low body temperature, slow heart rate, and liver failure. Breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, or severe or repeated vomiting requires immediate veterinary care. Go to an emergency veterinary clinic rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

What to do if your cat ate cinnamon
- Stop the exposure. Move the powder, food, oil, or diffuser out of reach and take your cat away from any airborne powder.
- Identify the product. Keep the container, ingredient list, or a photograph of the label. Note whether it was powder, a stick, oil, or prepared food.
- Estimate the amount and time. Tell the veterinarian your cat’s weight, when the exposure happened, and whether the cat swallowed, inhaled, or got the product on its fur.
- Call for advice promptly. Contact your veterinarian, particularly after oil exposure, a large amount of powder, inhalation, fur contamination, or any symptoms. In the United States, ASPCA Animal Poison Control is available 24/7 at (888) 426-4435, and Pet Poison Helpline lists (800) 213-6680 for consultations.
- Ask about coat decontamination. If oil or powder is on the coat, do not let your cat groom it off. Ask a veterinarian or poison-control professional how to clean the fur safely.
Do not try to make your cat vomit. Hydrogen peroxide can injure a cat’s stomach and esophagus, and there is no safe over-the-counter vomiting medicine for home use in cats. Salt, milk, oil, and other internet remedies can also cause harm or delay proper treatment. ASPCA warns against attempting to induce vomiting at home.
Can cats have cinnamon as a regular ingredient?
There is no nutritional reason to give cinnamon to a cat. Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need spices, sweet foods, or herbal additives. A cat that likes the smell may still develop mouth irritation or inhale loose powder, so keep cinnamon containers, sticks, baking ingredients, and essential oils secured.

If your cat only had a tiny lick of ordinary cinnamon and is acting normally, monitor closely and remove the remaining product. If the amount is uncertain, the cat is small or medically fragile, or the product was an oil, call a professional rather than relying on a generic “safe amount.”

- “Any amount of cinnamon is poisonous.” ASPCA lists cinnamon as non-toxic to cats, but large amounts and concentrated products can still cause harm.
- “Natural products are automatically safe.” Cinnamon essential oil can poison cats, and cats may ingest oil from their fur while grooming.
- “One teaspoon is a safe dose.” The often-repeated figure is a general estimate for most pets, not a guaranteed limit for an individual cat.
- “Peroxide will make a cat vomit safely.” It can cause serious gastrointestinal injury and should not be given to cats.
- “Only the cinnamon matters in a dessert.” Chocolate, onion, garlic, raisins, alcohol, and other ingredients may create a separate poisoning risk.

FAQ
Can cats eat a small amount of cinnamon powder?
A tiny accidental amount of ordinary ground cinnamon is unlikely to poison a cat, but it may irritate the mouth or stomach. Do not offer cinnamon intentionally.
What should I do if my cat licked cinnamon?
Remove the product, check whether it was plain powder or a concentrated oil, and monitor your cat. Call a veterinarian or poison-control service if the amount was large or uncertain, or if any symptoms appear.
Is cinnamon essential oil safe around cats?
No. Cinnamon essential oil is much more concentrated than culinary cinnamon and can be toxic if swallowed, applied to the coat, or inhaled from some products. Keep it away from cats and seek veterinary advice after exposure.
Can I make my cat vomit after eating cinnamon?
No. Do not give hydrogen peroxide, salt, milk, or other home remedies. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for instructions.
