Plan on at least 2.5 hours for the Aquarium itself; three to four hours is more comfortable for families, scheduled presentations, slower exhibit viewing, or a visit that includes food. A whale watch is a separate half-day activity, not an add-on to squeeze into a short Aquarium visit.
The Aquarium is at 1 Central Wharf, Boston, MA 02110. Its four-story Giant Ocean Tank—with Myrtle, the famous green sea turtle, and hundreds of Caribbean reef animals—is the natural starting point, but the penguin colony, sea lions, shark-and-ray touch tank, sea jellies, coral habitats, and child-focused Exploration Station all deserve time.

What is the New England Aquarium like?
The New England Aquarium is a nonprofit conservation organization whose stated work combines public engagement and education, marine-animal conservation, scientific research, and advocacy for a healthy ocean. It opened to the public on June 20, 1969, and has grown into both a major Boston attraction and a working conservation institution.
That combination affects the visitor experience. This is not simply a collection of tanks to walk past. Exhibits connect individual animals and habitats with larger issues such as coral-reef health, shark biology, regional marine ecosystems, and ocean conservation. For visitors who enjoy learning about animal behavior, habitat protection, and responsible stewardship, the conservation material adds depth beyond the headline exhibits.
Current admission prices and ticket strategy
The following standard prices were listed by the Aquarium as of August 12, 2026:
| Ticket | Aquarium admission | Aquarium plus movie |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | $39.95 | $44.95 |
| Child, ages 3–11 | $30.95 | $35.95 |
| Senior, age 60+ | $37.95 | $42.95 |
| Child age 2 and under | Free | Check the current ticket conditions |
These are date-sensitive prices, not permanent rates. Check the official ticket page before paying, particularly if your visit is months away or falls during a holiday period.
Should you buy tickets in advance?
Yes, especially for weekends, school holidays, and popular summer dates. The Aquarium recommends buying before arrival to guarantee entry. A limited number of tickets may be sold onsite when the building opens, but arriving without a reservation creates unnecessary risk if your day is built around a specific time.
New England resident discount
Residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont may be eligible for a $5 discount, subject to blackout dates. For 2026, the listed blackout period covers summer weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend—May 23, 2026—through Labor Day weekend—September 7, 2026. The discount does not apply to whale watches or Simons Theatre-only tickets. Verify both eligibility and the blackout calendar before purchase.
Could Boston CityPASS save money?
The Aquarium’s ticket information lists Boston CityPASS as an option and says the pass can save up to 45% at four Boston attractions. That can be worth comparing if you already plan to visit several participating attractions. Pass contents, prices, validity rules, and savings can change, so check the current CityPASS terms rather than assuming the Aquarium is still included under identical conditions.
The best exhibits to see
1. Giant Ocean Tank
Start here. The Giant Ocean Tank is a four-story Caribbean reef exhibit with multiple levels of viewing areas. Myrtle, the Aquarium’s well-known green sea turtle, is its most recognizable resident; she joined the tank in 1970. Hundreds of other reef animals share the habitat.
The tank works well as both an immediate highlight and a return point. Families can view it from lower levels, move upward for different perspectives, and revisit it later after seeing the rest of the Aquarium. Because it is central to the building, it is also a useful place to orient yourself at the beginning of the visit.
2. Penguin Colony
More than 50 African and southern rockhopper penguins live around the Giant Ocean Tank. The Aquarium’s listed penguin feeding times are 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; listed penguin talks are 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11:00 a.m. on weekends.
Those times can change, and an animal may not behave exactly as expected. Confirm the day’s schedule when you arrive, and treat a feeding or talk as an opportunity rather than a guarantee of a particular behavior or close-up view.

3. Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank
This hands-on exhibit features cownose rays, Atlantic rays, and epaulette sharks. It is a natural choice for children who learn best through carefully supervised participation, but it also gives adults a more concrete way to consider how these animals move, feed, and interact with their environment.
Rank #2
Follow the staff instructions and do not assume that every animal in the exhibit should be touched. The experience is managed for animal welfare as well as visitor education.
4. New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center
The open-air Marine Mammal Center is where visitors can watch California sea lions. It is a good stop when your group needs a change from indoor galleries, although weather and animal behavior can affect what you see. Do not confuse viewing the sea lions with an animal-interaction program; the regular exhibit is observation-focused.
5. Sea Jellies
The Sea Jellies exhibit is slower-paced and visually striking. Floating and free-swimming jellyfish create a quieter contrast to the busier central tank and more active family areas. It is particularly useful as a reset stop if younger visitors are becoming overstimulated.
6. Coral-reef exhibits
Healthy Corals, Healthy Reefs features live corals and Indo-Pacific fish while explaining why reef health matters. The separate Indo-Pacific Coral Reef habitat emphasizes the diversity and importance of tropical reef ecosystems.
Together, these exhibits help make the connection between beautiful reef animals and the less visible conditions that keep their ecosystems functioning. They are worth more than a quick photograph if conservation is one of your reasons for visiting.
7. Science of Sharks
Science of Sharks focuses on shark adaptations and the Aquarium’s research and conservation work. It is a useful counterweight to the idea that sharks are defined only by their reputation as predators: the exhibit directs attention to biology, survival strategies, and the need for evidence-based conservation.
8. Gulf of Maine
The Gulf of Maine exhibit brings the subject closer to home. It presents a regional ecosystem and helps connect the Aquarium’s international conservation themes with the waters and marine life of New England.
9. Olympic Coast
Olympic Coast represents the Pacific Northwest and includes sea anemones and a giant Pacific octopus. It is one of the more distinctive habitat stops and gives visitors a look at marine life that differs sharply from the Caribbean reef and Gulf of Maine environments.
10. Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon Rainforest exhibit combines freshwater and terrestrial habitats to evoke the Amazon ecosystem. It broadens the visit beyond ocean habitats while reinforcing how connected aquatic and land environments can be.
11. Exploration Station
Exploration Station is on Level 3 and is designed especially for young learners. It includes books, sensory-friendly elements, movement, play, and educator-led activities. Admission is included.
It is not only a play area. For families, it can be a valuable pacing tool: use it for hands-on learning, a change of activity, or a quieter break from crowded galleries. Because the space and programs can change, check what is operating on the day of your visit.

The Blue Planet Action Center focuses on ocean challenges and data-driven solutions. It is a good final stop for visitors who want the visit to end with practical conservation ideas rather than only animal highlights.
How long do you need at the Aquarium?
The Aquarium’s field-trip guidance recommends allowing at least two and a half hours. That is a reasonable minimum for the main experience, but it does not leave much room for a leisurely pace, a meal, a film, the gift shop, or an encounter program.
- About 2.5 hours: Enough for the Giant Ocean Tank, penguins, several major habitats, and a quick look at the other floors.
- Three to four hours: Better for families, visitors who want to read exhibit information, anyone scheduling a presentation, or groups planning a food break.
- Most of a day: Appropriate if you are adding a Simons Theatre film, an animal encounter, or substantial time at the café and shop. A whale watch should still be treated as a separate half-day activity.
Three practical visit plans
First-time visit: the efficient 2.5-hour route
- Arrive with tickets ready and begin at the Giant Ocean Tank to establish the layout.
- Walk the surrounding Penguin Colony and check the posted feeding and talk schedule.
- Continue to the shark-and-ray touch tank if it fits your group’s interests and the current operating schedule.
- See the sea lions, Sea Jellies, and at least one coral or regional habitat.
- Use the remaining time for Science of Sharks, the Gulf of Maine, or the Blue Planet Action Center rather than trying to see every label.
This route prioritizes the Aquarium’s signature experiences without pretending that every gallery can be explored deeply in one short visit.
Family visit: three to four hours
- Start with the Giant Ocean Tank and penguins before younger visitors tire.
- Build in the touch tank and Marine Mammal Center, following staff directions and posted schedules.
- Use Exploration Station as an active learning stop or a quieter reset.
- Choose two or three habitats—such as Sea Jellies, Healthy Corals, the Gulf of Maine, and Amazon Rainforest—instead of rushing through all of them.
- Plan the café, an outdoor picnic, or a restroom break before the final galleries.
Families with strollers should read the mobility guidance below before deciding how much equipment to bring.

Spend more time with the Giant Ocean Tank, Science of Sharks, Healthy Corals, the Gulf of Maine, and Blue Planet Action Center. Add a Simons Theatre film if you want a seated, weather-proof break, or choose an animal encounter if the educational subject and timing fit your plans. Repeat visitors may prefer to focus on one theme—reef conservation, regional waters, sharks, or marine research—rather than trying to cover the whole building again.
Optional add-ons
Simons Theatre
The Matthew and Marcia Simons Theatre is an optional large-format cinema with 3D films and nature documentaries shown on a screen nearly five stories high. The current listing includes Penguins: A Love Story, Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure, and Ocean Dreams, but titles and times are time-sensitive.
An Aquarium-plus-movie ticket can be convenient if you want a weather-proof activity or a less physically demanding break. The listed combination prices are $44.95 for adults, $35.95 for children ages 3–11, and $42.95 for seniors. Check the film schedule for your date before choosing the combination ticket.
New England Aquarium Whale Watch
The New England Aquarium Whale Watch operates in partnership with Boston Harbor City Cruises. The 2026 season launched on May 18, 2026, with cruises departing from Central Wharf and traveling toward Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a major feeding area for humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, dolphins, seabirds, and other marine life.
Cruises generally last approximately three to four hours aboard high-speed catamarans. Boats offer outdoor viewing decks, indoor cabins, and onboard food and beverage service, while Aquarium naturalists provide live educational narration. The official 2026 announcement describes the season as running from May through November, with multiple departures on many days.
Reserve this as a separate half-day block. It is not realistic to combine a full whale watch with a short Aquarium visit unless you have carefully matched departure and admission times and are comfortable with a rushed day. Wildlife sightings and particular whale behaviors are never guaranteed.
Animal encounters
Animal encounters require separate Aquarium admission and normally last about 30–45 minutes. Guests are asked to arrive 15 minutes early. The programs are educational, not unrestricted animal-touching sessions; the Aquarium specifically notes that guests may see the animals while some offerings are not interactive encounters.
Listed prices are:
- Standard encounter: $50 for nonmembers and $45 for members.
- Atlantic harbor seal meet-and-greet: $150 for nonmembers and $135 for members.
- Seal art encounter: $225 for nonmembers and $200 for members.
Some seal programs pause during molting season. Availability, program format, prices, and participating animals must be checked for the intended date. Choose an encounter because the educational experience appeals to you—not because it promises unrestricted interaction or a guaranteed behavior.

The Aquarium states that it works to accommodate visual, hearing, physical, and sensory-processing needs. Specific procedures matter:
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Visitors using their own wheelchairs and visitors with visual impairments may enter free of charge under the Aquarium’s stated policy. Obtain these tickets at the Information Desk rather than waiting in the outside line.
- A limited number of wheelchairs are available free to ticketed guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Identification is required.
- Wheelchair users may need elevator access to reach the Harbor View Café, Science of Sharks, and the top of the Giant Ocean Tank.
- Strollers are permitted, but the Aquarium does not lend or rent them and has no stroller-check area. It strongly recommends leaving strollers at home or in the car when possible because some areas require elevator access.
- ADA-defined service dogs under the handler’s control are permitted. Emotional-support animals that do not meet the ADA service-animal definition are not permitted.
If your visit involves a mobility device, sensory concern, service animal, or a scheduled program, contact the Aquarium before arrival and confirm the current route and procedure rather than relying only on a general description.
Whale-watch accessibility
The whale-watch boats named Aurora, Asteria, and Cetacea provide wheelchair access to the main deck, including exterior viewing areas, and have an accessible restroom on the main deck. Vessel conditions can differ, so confirm the specific boat and boarding arrangements before booking.
Food, bathrooms, bags, and lockers
Food and drinks
The Harbor View Café is on Level 2 and requires Aquarium admission. The Central Snack Bar and Dockside Beer Garden are outside on Central Wharf Plaza and are open to the general public seasonally.

Visitors may bring food, but it must be eaten at the outdoor blue picnic tables. Food and beverages other than water are not permitted in exhibit areas. Water fountains and bottle-refill stations are available.
Bathrooms and private-care space
Bathrooms are located in the lobby. Family restrooms are near the Harbor View Café on Level 2, and Simons Theatre has additional bathrooms. A first-aid and lactation room is available for visitors who need privacy.
Bags and lockers
Bags larger than 12 by 12 by 12 inches are not permitted in the main Aquarium building or Simons Theatre, with exceptions for diaper bags and medical-supply carriers. Bags, backpacks, strollers, and packages may be inspected.
Lockers are available through a kiosk. The Aquarium FAQ lists small lockers at $5 and large lockers at $7; treat those rates as subject to change. Because there is no stroller-check area, do not assume a large stroller or oversized bag can be stored onsite.
Parking and Central Wharf planning
The Aquarium does not own a parking facility. Its official parking information lists several garages within approximately 0.3 miles, including Harbor Garage at about 0.1 mile.
The listed Harbor Garage rates are $42 for a daily stay of more than 80 minutes without validation, or $32 for up to eight hours with validation for Aquarium members and whale-watch guests. Parking prices and validation rules can change, so compare garages and consider reserving in advance when appropriate. Confirm whether your membership or whale-watch ticket qualifies for the relevant validation before counting on the lower rate.
Central Wharf is also the departure point for the Aquarium’s whale watch, so pay attention to the time and location on any separate cruise booking. A whale-watch departure is not the same thing as Aquarium admission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When does membership make sense?
Membership is most compelling for Boston-area residents, local families, or travelers planning multiple Aquarium-related activities. Current listed levels are:
| Membership | Listed price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | $79 | A solo visitor who expects to return |
| Dual | $129 | Two named members or a household arrangement covered by the current terms |
| Friends & Family | $179 | A family or group that can use the listed four-person member/guest configuration |
Benefits include free admission for the named membership group, discounted admission for additional guests, and discounts on Simons Theatre tickets, dining, gift-shop purchases, whale watches, animal encounters, and nearby parking. Members may also receive access to member-only hours and events. Review the current membership terms for the exact guest configuration and restrictions.
Best Value
Online memberships provide Aquarium admission benefits immediately after purchase, but the Aquarium says other benefits and discounts may take at least 48 hours to process. If you need an immediate movie pass, whale-watch discount, or educational-program benefit, purchase onsite or by phone instead of assuming an online membership will activate every benefit instantly.
For a single trip, compare the membership price with the admission your group actually needs and the discounts you are likely to use. Membership is not automatically the cheapest choice for every visitor.
Conservation, research, and what the Aquarium represents
The Aquarium’s history helps explain why its exhibits move between animal viewing and conservation education. It opened in 1969, Myrtle joined the Giant Ocean Tank in 1970, and the institution launched the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life in 2016 to expand applied marine research and data-driven conservation solutions.

The Gulf of Maine and Blue Planet Action Center make the regional and policy dimensions visible, while Science of Sharks and the coral exhibits connect visitor learning to research and habitat protection.
The Aquarium says that visitor revenue, memberships, tickets, retail activity, and programs support its conservation work. That is an institutional statement, but it is useful context when deciding whether the visit is merely entertainment or also a way to support the organization’s public and conservation mission.
A conservation-related book for after the visit
If the right-whale and marine-conservation themes interest you, look for The North Atlantic Right Whale: Disappearing Giants. The Aquarium’s own gift-ideas information describes it as covering the species’ history, identification, migration, and conservation challenges. It is a natural post-visit extension of the Aquarium’s conservation themes, but check current availability and edition details before buying.
Gift shop and sustainability claims
Admission is required to enter the gift shop. It sells books, clothing, plush marine animals, educational toys, and souvenirs; the online store also offers Aquarium-branded apparel, mugs, and other gifts.

The Aquarium and retail partner Event Network report that the shop has moved toward plastic-free, biodegradable, or recycled-plastic products. They also state that recycled post-consumer material is used in plush items and that more than 380,000 plastic bottles have been recycled into the plush collection. These are institution- and partner-reported sustainability claims, not independent product certifications, so evaluate individual products on their own labeling and materials.
Final booking checklist
- Confirm the official opening hours for your date, especially outside the current summer schedule.
- Buy timed admission in advance if you are visiting on a weekend, holiday, or busy school-break date.
- Check the day’s penguin feeding and talk times after arrival; schedules and animal behavior can change.
- Decide whether a Simons Theatre film fits your day and verify the current title and showtime.
- Book animal encounters separately, arrive 15 minutes early, and confirm whether the program is actually interactive.
- Schedule a whale watch as a separate three- to four-hour activity and do not treat a sighting as guaranteed.
- Compare standard admission with the New England resident discount, Boston CityPASS, or membership only after checking current terms.
- Measure bags against the 12-by-12-by-12-inch limit and plan for diaper-bag or medical-carrier exceptions if applicable.
- Leave large strollers at home or in the car when possible; there is no stroller rental or stroller-check area.
- Review accessibility arrangements before arrival if you use a wheelchair, need an elevator route, have sensory concerns, or travel with a service dog.
- Compare nearby garage prices and confirm validation eligibility before parking.
- Bring or buy water, and remember that outside food must be eaten at the outdoor blue picnic tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is two and a half hours enough for the New England Aquarium?
It is the Aquarium’s recommended minimum and can cover the Giant Ocean Tank, penguins, and several major exhibits. Allow three to four hours for a relaxed family visit, scheduled programs, food, or more detailed viewing.
Can I visit the New England Aquarium and go whale watching on the same day?
It is possible only with careful scheduling, but it is usually not the best plan. A whale watch generally lasts three to four hours and should be treated as a separate half-day activity rather than squeezed into a short Aquarium visit.
Are animal encounters at the Aquarium hands-on?
Not necessarily. They are educational programs, and the Aquarium states that guests may see the animals while some offerings are not interactive encounters. Program availability and format vary, and some seal programs pause during molting season.
Can I bring a stroller into the New England Aquarium?
Strollers are permitted, but the Aquarium does not rent or lend them, has no stroller-check area, and recommends leaving them at home or in the car when possible because some areas require elevator access.
Do I need to reserve Aquarium tickets before arriving?
The Aquarium recommends advance purchase to guarantee entry because weekends frequently sell out. A limited number of tickets may be available onsite when the building opens, but availability is not guaranteed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Reserve admission ahead of time, allow at least 2.5 hours—and preferably three to four for a family—then build your visit around the Giant Ocean Tank, penguins, and the exhibits that match your interests. Add the Simons Theatre only if its schedule fits naturally, and reserve a whale watch as a separate half-day plan. Recheck prices, resident-discount blackout dates, hours, presentations, encounter availability, parking, and accessibility details immediately before traveling.
