Shih-poos are affectionate companion dogs created by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. They can be a good fit for people who want a small, interactive dog and are prepared for regular grooming, daily companionship, training, and preventive dental care. They are not a standardized breed, however, so adult size, coat, shedding, appearance, health, and temperament can vary considerably from one dog to another.

You may also see this mix called a Shih Poo or Shoodle. The name describes parentage—not a guarantee that the dog will be hypoallergenic, unusually healthy, quiet, or a particular adult size.

What is a Shih-poo?

A Shih-poo is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle, most often a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Because there is no single universally accepted Shih-poo breed standard, breeders and owners may produce dogs with noticeably different proportions, coats, and behavior.

A Shih-poo may be compact and short-faced like a Shih Tzu, lightly built and curly-coated like a Poodle, or somewhere between the two. Parentage, generation, early handling, socialization, training, and individual genetics all affect the adult dog. Information about this mix should therefore be treated as a set of tendencies rather than a promise.

How big do Shih-poos get?

There is no dependable single adult weight or height range for every Shih-poo. The Poodle parent’s variety makes a meaningful difference: the American Kennel Club describes Toy Poodles as no more than 10 inches at the shoulder and Miniature Poodles as 15 inches or under. The AKC describes Shih Tzus as generally weighing 9–16 pounds and standing about 9–10.5 inches. Those are parent-breed figures, not guaranteed Shih-poo measurements.

Ask about the size and structure of both parents, but understand that even that information cannot predict an individual puppy with certainty. Avoid treating labels such as teacup or tiny as health or quality indicators. Extremely small size can create additional welfare and medical concerns, and the label itself is not a recognized Shih-poo variety.

Coat, colors, shedding, and the hypoallergenic misconception

Shih-poo coats may be straight and silky, loosely wavy, or quite curly. Colors and markings can also vary widely. Some dogs shed less visibly than heavily shedding breeds, especially when they inherit a Poodle-like coat, but low visible shedding does not mean no shedding.

No dog should be assumed to be allergy-safe simply because one parent is a Poodle. Allergens come from sources including skin flakes, saliva, and urine as well as hair. People with allergies should spend time with the specific dog, ideally in more than one setting, before committing. A Shih-poo’s coat can also change as a puppy matures, so puppy appearance is not a reliable guarantee of the adult coat. PetMD’s Shih-poo overview explains why coat and appearance claims should be viewed as variable in this mixed breed.

Shih-poo temperament and personality

The most reasonable expectation is a people-oriented companion that wants substantial interaction. Shih Tzus are commonly described as playful, affectionate, outgoing, adaptable, and strongly attached to their people. Poodles tend to contribute intelligence, trainability, alertness, and a greater appetite for activity and mental work. A Shih-poo may inherit any combination of those traits.

Many Shih-poos are friendly, playful, and content to be near their owners. Others may be more cautious, vocal, excitable, independent, or sensitive. The mix label cannot predict an individual dog’s behavior. Look at the parents’ temperaments, the puppy’s behavior during handling, and the breeder’s or rescue organization’s socialization practices.

Are Shih-poos good family dogs?

They can be, including in some apartments and smaller homes, provided the dog receives companionship, training, play, and appropriate exercise. Small size does not make a dog automatically suitable for children. Young children should be supervised, taught how to handle a dog respectfully, and never left alone with one. A child’s behavior and the individual dog’s temperament are more informative than the cross’s name.

Introduce a Shih-poo carefully to other dogs, cats, and unfamiliar people. Reward calm behavior and provide escape space. A well-socialized adult may live successfully with other animals, but no outcome is guaranteed.

Can Shih-poos be left alone?

Many Shih-poos are highly social and may be a poor fit for a household where everyone is away for long periods every day. That does not mean every Shih-poo develops separation anxiety. It does mean prospective owners should honestly assess how much time the dog will spend alone and plan gradual alone-time training, enrichment, and—when necessary—a dog walker or sitter.

Exercise, training, and enrichment

A Shih-poo often does not need the same exercise program as a large working dog, but “small” does not mean “no exercise.” A practical routine may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • a short daily walk appropriate to the dog’s age, fitness, weather, and breathing ability;
  • indoor play such as fetch, tug, or a supervised toy game;
  • brief reward-based training sessions;
  • sniffing opportunities and food puzzles; and
  • quiet rest and time near the family.

Some Shih-poos inherit more of the Poodle’s need for mental stimulation and may become noisy, destructive, or restless when bored. Training should focus on rewards, clear cues, management, and repetition. Harsh corrections are particularly unsuitable for a sensitive, people-oriented dog and can damage trust. Begin handling practice early: gently touch the paws, ears, mouth, face, and coat while pairing each step with food.

Short-faced dogs can have poorer heat tolerance. Exercise in cool parts of the day, provide water and shade, and stop if the dog shows excessive panting, weakness, confusion, or difficulty breathing. Do not assume a Shih-poo is a competent swimmer: Shih Tzus are not considered good swimmers, and a short muzzle or compact body can make water especially risky. Use close supervision and a properly fitted canine life jacket around water.

Shih-poo grooming: the major ownership commitment

Grooming is not an occasional cosmetic task for this mix. Shih-poo hair may mat close to the skin, particularly around the ears, collar, legs, armpits, tail, belly, and sanitary area. A long, dense, or curly coat generally demands more work than a short puppy cut.

A workable grooming schedule

  • Daily or every other day: Brush and comb the coat, depending on its length, density, curl, and tendency to mat. Brushing must reach the skin rather than skim only the top layer.
  • Several times a week: Check the ears, eye area, paws, and areas hidden by harnesses or collars. Clean ears only as directed by your veterinarian.
  • As needed: Wipe the eye area, keep hair away from the eyes when appropriate, and maintain sanitary trimming.
  • Regularly: Trim nails and bathe with dog-formulated products when the dog is dirty or according to a groomer’s or veterinarian’s advice.
  • About every four to six weeks for many clipped coats: Schedule professional grooming or maintain a short trim at home only if you have been taught to use clippers safely.

A slicker brush for dogs can help separate and maintain a Shih-poo’s coat, but no brush works equally well for every coat. Use gentle, methodical sections and stop if the skin becomes irritated. Follow brushing with a stainless-steel dog grooming comb to check whether you reached the skin and to find hidden tangles. These tools help prevent new mats; they do not make severe existing mats safe to remove at home.

Never pull forcefully through a tight mat. Matted hair can conceal sore skin, parasites, wounds, and infection. Painful or extensive mat removal should be handled by a qualified groomer or veterinarian. Introduce grooming gradually with short sessions, calm handling, and rewards. A fearful dog may need a grooming plan developed with veterinary and professional grooming help rather than restraint and rushed clipping.

Dental care for a small dog

Small, short-faced dogs may have crowded or abnormally positioned teeth, making daily dental care especially worthwhile. Merck Veterinary Manual recommends daily toothbrushing as the best home approach. If brushing is not yet tolerated, wiping the teeth with gauze at least every two to three days may provide some help while you train the dog to accept a brush.

Use a dog-specific toothpaste—never human toothpaste, which may contain ingredients unsafe for dogs—and a brush sized for a small mouth. A dog toothbrush and dog-specific toothpaste can support a gradual preventive routine: first reward lip lifting, then touching the teeth, then brief brushing of the outer surfaces. Veterinary dental examinations remain necessary because brushing cannot remove established tartar or treat periodontal disease.

Dental chews, diets, wipes, and water additives can be supplemental options, not replacements for brushing or veterinary care. The Veterinary Oral Health Council’s accepted-products list is a useful way to check products with accepted plaque- or tartar-control claims. Acceptance does not guarantee that every dog will tolerate or benefit from a product; follow size guidance, supervise chewing, and ask your veterinarian what is appropriate.

Health concerns

A Shih-poo is not automatically healthier because it is a crossbreed. It can inherit conditions associated with either parent, and breed information cannot diagnose or predict disease in an individual dog.

Issues a veterinarian may discuss include:

  • Patellar luxation: instability or displacement of the kneecap, a concern in small dogs and Toy or Miniature Poodles;
  • Hip dysplasia: abnormal development of the hip joint;
  • Eye disease: including cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachment, and corneal dryness or inflammation;
  • Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: a hip disorder more associated with Toy and Miniature Poodles than Standard Poodles;
  • von Willebrand disease: an inherited blood-clotting disorder relevant to Poodle lines;
  • airway and heat-tolerance problems: especially when a dog has a notably shortened muzzle; and
  • dental crowding, skin problems, and weight gain: concerns that may be affected by anatomy, coat, diet, and daily care.

These are risk considerations, not a list of conditions your dog will necessarily develop. Arrange routine veterinary examinations, keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current, monitor body condition, and discuss an appropriate screening plan. Seek veterinary attention for breathing difficulty, heat intolerance, persistent eye discharge, squinting, lameness, dental pain, severe itching or skin disease, or a sudden behavior change.

Feeding and weight management

Feed a complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, size, activity, and medical needs. Package portions are only starting points. Small dogs can gain excess weight from seemingly minor extras, and treats should be included in the daily calorie picture. Measure meals, use part of the normal ration for training when practical, and ask your veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying only on the number on a scale.

Do not switch foods, add supplements, or use dental products as treatment for a health problem without veterinary advice. A healthy body condition helps protect mobility, comfort, and heat tolerance.

Choosing a Shih-poo from a breeder or rescue

Since there is no universal Shih-poo standard, evaluate the actual dog, parents, records, and rearing environment—not marketing promises such as “hypoallergenic,” “teacup,” or “healthier hybrid.” A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss both parent breeds and provide verifiable health information.

Questions for a breeder

  • Was the Poodle parent Toy or Miniature, and what are the parents’ actual sizes and ages?
  • Can I meet the mother and, when possible, see the father or reliable information about him?
  • What orthopedic, eye, and applicable DNA screening has been performed for each parent?
  • Can I see the reports or search results rather than only a claim that the parents are “health tested”?
  • Have results been publicly released through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database where appropriate?
  • How were puppies socialized, handled, exposed to grooming, and introduced to household experiences?
  • What health guarantee, veterinary records, identification, return policy, and post-placement support are provided?

The exact screening panel should be confirmed with the breeder’s veterinarian and the relevant parent-breed organizations; no test panel rules out every possible problem. Be cautious if a seller will not show records, will not let you see where puppies are raised, pressures you to pay quickly, or guarantees a particular adult size, coat, personality, or allergy outcome.

Questions for a rescue or shelter

Ask for medical records, vaccination and parasite-prevention history, dental status, known surgeries, and any history of airway, eye, orthopedic, skin, or weight problems. Ask specifically how the dog behaves around children, dogs, cats, strangers, grooming, nail handling, being picked up, and periods alone. A foster home may be able to provide more useful behavior observations than a brief kennel visit.

Adoption fees and policies vary by organization. The ASPCA’s adoption guidance notes that shelters and rescues commonly charge adoption fees and that pet insurance may help with veterinary expenses. If considering pet insurance for a Shih-poo, compare waiting periods, deductibles, reimbursement, hereditary and congenital-condition language, age eligibility, and pre-existing-condition exclusions before enrolling; coverage terms vary and insurance is not a substitute for routine care.

Choose another type of dog—or delay adoption—if you need a reliably hypoallergenic pet, a guaranteed adult size or temperament, a dog that can routinely tolerate long isolation, or a low-maintenance coat. The right Shih-poo is an individual whose needs match your household, not simply a dog that fits a breed label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Shih-poos hypoallergenic?

No. Some Shih-poos shed less visibly, particularly those with a Poodle-like coat, but no dog is guaranteed hypoallergenic. Allergic households should spend time with the specific dog before adopting.

How big will a Shih-poo get?

There is no reliable universal size range because breeders may use Toy or Miniature Poodles and mixed-breed inheritance varies. The parents’ size can provide context, but it cannot guarantee a puppy’s adult height or weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a Shih-poo be groomed?

Many need brushing daily or at least every other day, depending on coat length, density, curl, and lifestyle. A clipped coat often needs professional grooming about every four to six weeks, although individual schedules vary.

Are Shih-poos good with children?

They can be good family companions when properly socialized, but young children must be supervised and taught respectful handling. Individual temperament and the child’s behavior matter more than the mix label.

How do you care for a Shih-poo’s teeth?

Daily toothbrushing with dog-specific toothpaste is the preferred home routine. Dental chews or other products may supplement brushing, but they do not replace veterinary dental examinations or professional treatment of established tartar.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Shih-poos can be loving, adaptable small companions, but they are variable mixed-breed dogs—not guaranteed hypoallergenic or disease-free pets. The best match is a well-socialized individual whose grooming, companionship, dental-care, exercise, and veterinary needs your household can consistently meet.
