Male vs. Female Cats: Pros, Cons, and How to Choose

A cat’s individual temperament and fit matter more than sex. Learn how reproductive status, typical size, and observed behavior can inform your choice.

For most adopters, a cat’s sex is a poor predictor of whether it will be affectionate, easygoing, or a good fit at home. Temperament, socialization, history, health, and household compatibility matter more. The clearest differences are tied to reproductive status: cats that have not been spayed or neutered may show heat-related behavior, roaming, fighting, or urine marking.

Do male and female cats have different personalities?

Not reliably. Cats Protection says there is little difference between male and female cats, especially when they are neutered, and the Merck Veterinary Manual describes behavior in neutered males and spayed females as very similar. A cat’s personality reflects its individual genetic background, upbringing, and experiences—not a dependable male-or-female rule.

That means claims such as “male cats are cuddlier” or “female cats are more independent” are not sound ways to choose. Meet the cat if possible, and ask the shelter or foster carer what they have actually observed: whether the cat seeks attention, accepts handling, plays confidently, or prefers space. Cornell’s guidance on choosing a cat also emphasizes friendliness and comfort with people.

Practical differences between male and female cats

Factor Male cats Female cats
When not neutered or spayed Hormones may contribute to roaming, fighting, and urine spraying. These behaviors are tendencies, not certainties. Heat may bring restlessness and increased vocalizing. These behaviors are tendencies, not certainties.
After neutering or spaying Neutering prevents reproduction and removes the source of sex hormones that can drive mating-related behavior. It does not guarantee a particular personality or eliminate every behavior. Spaying prevents reproduction and heat cycles. It does not guarantee a particular personality or eliminate every behavior.
Typical size Usually slightly larger than females, though breed and individual variation matter. Usually slightly smaller than males, though breed and individual variation matter.
Affection and sociability No reliable sex-based rule; assess the individual cat. No reliable sex-based rule; assess the individual cat.
Health or ease of care Cannot be ranked as categorically healthier or easier based on sex alone. Cannot be ranked as categorically healthier or easier based on sex alone.

For male cats specifically, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says neutering reduces or eliminates fighting, roaming, and spraying in 80–90% of male cats. The page does not state a year for that figure. It applies to those listed behaviors, not to every behavior or an individual cat’s guaranteed outcome.

What changes after spaying or neutering?

Spaying generally refers to sterilization surgery for a female cat; neutering commonly refers to castration in a male cat, though the term is also used more broadly. Sterilization prevents reproduction, and removing the source of sex hormones can reduce behaviors associated with mating. The effects vary by cat, and behavior can have causes beyond reproductive hormones.

There is no one-size-fits-all timing or decision that can be made from sex alone. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends weighing potential benefits and risks for the individual animal, considering factors including age, breed, sex, health status, temperament, intended use, and household environment. Discuss the procedure and timing with a veterinarian. These points do not establish that one sex is categorically healthier: a comparative assessment of lifetime health risks by sex, age, breed, and sterilization status is not available here.

How to choose the right cat for your home

  1. Start with the household. Consider how much activity and interaction you can offer, who lives in the home, and whether there are children or other pets.
  2. Ask about the cat’s observed behavior. Find out how the cat responds to people, handling, noise, play, and other animals. Ask what is known about its history and health.
  3. Meet the cat when possible. Look for a level of sociability and confidence that fits your expectations rather than assuming sex predicts affection or independence.
  4. Discuss health and sterilization. Ask the shelter or current caregiver what care has already been provided, then discuss outstanding medical questions and spay/neuter timing with a veterinarian.

Sex can be one piece of a cat’s background, but it is not a shortcut to predicting companionship. Base the choice on the individual cat and the life you can offer it.
