Their size can make them look easy to keep, but a healthy budgie needs more than a cage, seed mix, and occasional attention. It needs safe housing, a nutritionally sound diet, daily exercise, social contact, enrichment, and access to an avian veterinarian.
With consistent care, budgies are active, entertaining companions that may learn whistles, household sounds, and words. Before bringing one home, make sure you can provide daily interaction and manage a commitment that may last many years.
What to know before getting a budgie
Budgies are social, intelligent flock birds. A single budgie can bond closely with its keeper, but it will need substantial daily interaction and enrichment. Another compatible budgie can provide companionship, although two birds should not be placed together immediately. New birds need a gradual introduction after a period of separate housing and a veterinary check.
Do not rely on an exceptionally old individual as a normal lifespan estimate. Genetics, diet, housing, stress, accidents, and medical care all matter. The Association of Avian Veterinarians records a captive budgerigar longevity record of 18 years, so ownership can be a long-term responsibility.

Locate an avian or bird-experienced veterinarian before you buy or adopt. Birds often hide illness, and a new bird should be examined soon after arrival. If you already keep birds, ask the veterinarian about quarantine length and appropriate testing before the newcomer is exposed to them. MSD Veterinary Manual specifically recommends testing new birds for psittacosis and other infections where appropriate.
Setting up the cage
Choose the largest practical cage rather than treating a minimum size as an ideal. A commonly cited minimum for one budgie is 1 × 1 × 2 feet—about 30 × 30 × 60 cm—but a wider cage is generally more useful than a tall, narrow one. Budgies move horizontally and need room to flap, climb, play, and move between perches. Two birds need more space.
| Setup feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Shape | A roomy rectangular cage; avoid round cages, which offer little usable corner space. |
| Bars | Close enough to prevent the head or legs becoming trapped. |
| Construction | Stainless steel or a dependable bird-safe coating. Avoid flaking paint and questionable older cages that may contain unsafe metals. |
| Perches | Several clean natural-wood perches in different diameters. Toes should wrap around roughly three-quarters of a perch. |
| Floor lining | Plain paper or paper towels, changed daily so droppings can be monitored. |
| Bowls | Shallow food and water dishes attached to the cage sides, away from droppings. |
Do not use sandpaper perch covers. They can irritate the feet. Do not collect branches casually from outside: trees including apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, plum, oak, laurel, pitch pine, and yew may be unsafe unless an avian professional confirms the wood is suitable.
Place the cage in a bright, well-ventilated room where the budgie can observe household activity, but not in the kitchen. Keep it away from cooking fumes, radiators, fireplaces, direct heat, air-conditioning drafts, and abrupt temperature changes. The cage should be secure and high enough to feel safe without being isolated from the household.
Feeding a pet budgie
An all-seed diet is not complete. Seed mixes are often high in fat and carbohydrates and low in essential nutrients. Budgies may also select only their favorite seeds, making the nutritional imbalance worse. Long-term seed-heavy feeding is associated with obesity, fatty liver disease, iodine deficiency, and other nutritional problems.

Use a nutritionally complete food formulated for small parrots. Diet proportions vary by product and by the bird’s health. VCA describes pellets as approximately 60–80% of the diet, with fresh produce making up no more than roughly 20–25%. The AAV notes that small parrots may do better with free-choice pellets alongside a measured daily seed meal rather than a pellet-only plan. Ask your veterinarian to help choose an appropriate balance.
Convert a seed-fed budgie gradually. Never remove all familiar food and assume the bird will eat pellets. Monitor intake and body weight during the change; a bird that stops eating can become seriously ill.
Suitable additions
- Leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, peppers, squash, and cooked sweet potato.
- Small amounts of berries and apple with all seeds removed.
- Fresh, clean water available at all times.
Wash produce and remove fresh or cooked food before it spoils. The AAV recommends removing cooked food within one hour. Wash water containers daily.

- Avocado, chocolate, alcohol, and caffeine.
- Very salty or highly processed foods.
- Food cooked with butter or oil.
- Grit or gravel. Budgies hull seeds before swallowing them and do not need grit; some may eat enough to cause a gastrointestinal obstruction.
- Vitamin, mineral, iodine, or calcium supplements unless prescribed by a veterinarian.
Exercise, taming, and mental stimulation
A budgie should have daily, supervised time outside the cage in a bird-safe room. Before opening the door:
- Close windows and doors.
- Turn off ceiling fans and other moving appliances.
- Cover or visibly mark large windows and mirrors.
- Remove access to sinks, toilets, bathtubs, open water, flames, stovetops, and electrical cords.
- Keep cats, dogs, and other pets out of the room.
Allow a new budgie time to settle before expecting it to step onto your hand. Use quiet movements, a calm voice, and small food rewards. Teach “step up” first with a finger or handheld perch. Young or hand-raised birds may be easier to tame, but neither age nor hand-rearing guarantees a confident temperament. Never chase, grab, or punish a frightened bird.

- 【Easy to Clean and Maintain】The parrot cage features a detachable slide-out tray for easy cleaning. The mesh grating prevents pets from walking directly on waste but also prevents bird droppings from accumulating at the bottom. This ensures the birds' well-being and providing a convenient way to simplify maintenance.
- 【Convenient Thoughtful Details】This cockatiel cage includes multiple perches for pet birds to perch and rest. The transparent feeding box allows caregivers to monitor food levels, enabling timely food and water replenishment. The portable handle on the side for easy lifting and cage adjustment. The cage is convenient for stacking to make the most of space.
Offer safe opportunities to chew, climb, shred, and forage. Rotate toys rather than filling the cage with everything at once. Inspect toys frequently and remove loose fibers, broken pieces, open chain links, unsafe bells, and anything small enough to swallow or capable of trapping a toe.
A mirror is not a substitute for companionship. Some budgies become fixated on mirrors, guard them, regurgitate toward them, or neglect normal eating and interaction. Remove the mirror if these behaviors appear.
Provide a dark, quiet, uninterrupted period for sleep each night. Household lights and television late into the evening can contribute to behavioral and reproductive problems.
Household hazards for budgies
Birds have highly sensitive respiratory systems. A substance that seems mildly irritating to a person can be dangerous to a budgie. Keep the bird away from:
- Overheated PTFE or Teflon-coated cookware, air fryers, irons, self-cleaning ovens, and some heat lamps.
- Cigarette smoke, marijuana smoke, and other smoke.
- Scented candles, air fresheners, perfumes, hairspray, aerosols, nail products, paints, solvents, pesticides, bleach, ammonia, and strong cleaning products.
- Kitchen smoke, burning food, fireplaces, and stovetops.
- Electrical cords, open water, glue traps, lead-containing objects, unsafe metals, and toxic plants.
PTFE fumes can be invisible and odorless. Exposure may cause breathing problems, neurological signs, collapse, or sudden death. If you suspect fume exposure, move the bird to fresh air and contact an emergency avian veterinarian immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to develop.

Cleaning and routine care
Replace cage paper every day and clean food and water dishes daily. Wash dirty perches and toys with warm, soapy water, rinse them thoroughly, and allow them to dry before returning them. Replace anything damaged or difficult to clean. Avoid covering the cage floor with wood chips, corncob litter, or cat litter; these materials make droppings harder to monitor and may create other risks.

Because birds conceal illness, a visible change may mean the problem is already advanced. Contact a bird veterinarian promptly for:
- Fluffed feathers, unusual sleepiness, reduced vocalization, or inactivity.
- Sitting low on the perch or remaining on the cage floor.
- Reduced appetite, unusual thirst, vomiting, weight loss, or changed droppings.
- Weakness, loss of balance, lameness, drooping wings, or reluctance to move.
- Nasal or eye discharge, wheezing, open-mouth breathing, or tail bobbing.
- Abnormal beak, nails, feet, skin, or feathers.
Open-mouth breathing, severe weakness, unresponsiveness, active bleeding, or lying on the cage bottom are emergencies. Call an emergency veterinarian rather than waiting to see if the budgie improves.

Common budgie-care mistakes
| Claim | What is safer |
|---|---|
| “A seed mix is a complete diet.” | Use complete small-parrot food and a veterinarian-guided feeding plan. |
| “Budgies need grit to digest seeds.” | Do not provide grit unless a veterinarian specifically directs it. |

FAQ
Can a budgie live alone?
Yes, but a single budgie needs substantial daily human interaction, exercise, and enrichment. Another compatible budgie may provide useful social contact, but introductions must be gradual and preceded by quarantine and veterinary advice.
How large should a budgie cage be?
A commonly cited minimum for one budgie is 1 × 1 × 2 feet, or about 30 × 30 × 60 cm. This is a minimum, not an ideal target. Choose the largest practical rectangular cage, with more space for two birds.
Can budgies eat only seeds?
They should not. Seed-only diets are nutritionally unbalanced and can contribute to obesity and disease. Offer nutritionally complete small-parrot food, with the exact pellet, seed, and produce balance tailored to the bird with veterinary guidance.
What fumes are dangerous to budgies?
Overheated PTFE or Teflon, smoke, scented products, aerosols, paints, solvents, pesticides, bleach, ammonia, and cooking fumes can all be dangerous. PTFE exposure is an emergency even when fumes are invisible or odorless.
The Bottom Line
A well-cared-for budgie needs a spacious, safe cage; complete nutrition rather than an all-seed diet; daily supervised exercise; social interaction; clean water and housing; uninterrupted sleep; and regular observation for subtle illness. The most important preparations are finding a bird-experienced veterinarian and removing household fumes and hazards before the budgie arrives.
